Here I go again writing about straighteners, except this time I have lots of nice things to say about them because they are brilliant..! Okay so my last pair of straighteners were a little bit rubbish and burnt my hair into little pieces, but these ones are fabulous and not once have a ended up burning myself on them… Hopefully I won't either.. Touch wood..!
These straighteners are of a much better quality from a much better brand in my opinion.. Personally I have always preferred Remington straighteners and curlers for that matter.. They tend to last much longer than other brands and are of a similar price so it's a winning situation, brilliant products for smaller prices, than buying GHD's.. I have never understood the fascination with GHD's especially the price when you can but a pair like mine that are easily as good at a third of the price..!
My new straighteners are Remington S2003's..
A little specification;
Teflon woven fabric covered plates, Instant heat ready in 30-60 seconds, Variable heat 140° - 200°, On/Off switch and LED indicator light, Automatic shut off after 1 hour, Salon length 3m swivel cord, Faux Suede heat protective mat/wrap.
The straighteners come in a back and orange box, with 'join the shine revolution' splattered across the front. The box has an attractive flip front feature, revealing more information about the technology behind the claims. Across the whole of the box there are pictures of the straighteners showing the way in which the less breakages occur, if you need to know how it works.
The actual straighteners are around 40cm long and have about a 7cm radius. On the box they are pictured with a silver barrel, but both my pair and another pair I have used have a gold coloured barrel with the black soft touch handle. And Gold locking feature. When they first arrive they are open and a little stiff if you wanted to lock them you need to twist the handle really hard. The straighteners do have a little ledge on the back near the start of the cord to rest on any surface to hold the heat away from the surface and obviously not to melt it..!
These are not the best looking straighteners in the world but they are slim line and are light enough to hold in your hands for a long time without wanting to put them down because they are too heavy..!
The Selling Point
The box makes a big claim of up to 70% more protection from hair splitting and damage, which for a product that is meant to ply high heat to your hair is a good thing.. I can actually say it does work, my hair is a lot less split now than when I was using my other straighteners, but they aren't perfect as everyone's hair is different. To someone who's hair does not split too much these straighteners could possibly eradicate that problem totally..! They also boast the advantage of being able to provide more shine to the hair itself, another claim I can assure you it does fulfil. The plates are actually ceramic, with tourmaline ionic conditioning, and the Teflon woven fabric over the top, which at the time was exclusive to Remington.
The straighteners were very exclusive and innovative when they were first released a few years back, admittedly now they are a little less fantastic compared to the nano diamond technology we can now have for our hair, but in all fairness they do more damage to hair than is imaginable..! At least with fabric woven plates there is a layer to go through so it is not blunt heat straight on your hair leaving less of a chance to get split ends and damage.
My Opinion
Anyway back to the specifications; depending on the heat setting you actually want for these can vary the time they take to heat, the lowest temperature takes about 20 seconds but on the box it does say 60 seconds. (Mine do it faster than that..!) Only one thing I will say about the heating up process is that if you heat them up with the plates locked together be prepared for a little steam, not enough to set a smoke alarm off, but there is enough, especially on the hottest setting.
To my surprise the middle of the range of heat settings is as good as the 210° on my old pair of straighteners. So not only is the heat a lot more effective, the fabric transfers the heat to your hair at a lower temperature than other straighteners therefore holding the manufacturers claim of les damage to hair. The 200° heat setting on these straighteners do create a lot of steam on hair but I'm not to sure if that's from the straighteners or if it is singeing all the moisture out of the hair..!
As usual the straighteners have an on/off switch that must be held down to switch power on and off, but admittedly the first time I used a pair of these I couldn't turn them on (shame on me I know..!) of course a few months down the line I am more than capable of turning my own straighteners on.. The LED light on these flashes until the plates are the desired heat for your straightening..!
The cable is more than adequate for stretching across the room , depending on the size of your room obviously.. The cable swivels in the base of the barrel of the straighteners so it is easy to move around your head with them without struggling to move the straighteners, or burning yourself.
The protective mat and wrap, is a little shall we say 'brown,' not the most attractive colour for the item but never the less it does its job so really I can't complain. However I will say the small pocket that holds the barrel doesn't hold in too much heat be warned pick it up in the middle not at the barrel end of you will end up with sore fingers..!
Okay so one pair of straighteners can't be that perfect, and they're not.. Unfortunately they all have little faults, however the only major one I could find with these was the fact that the temperature gauge goes up in notches instead of actual temperature so you are never quite sure what temperature you are actually doing your hair with.
Overall
These are a brilliant pair of straighteners, that will last you at least three years, I know someone who ahs had their pair two years and they are still in perfect working order, yes the paint has rubbed and things are not as tidy on the exterior but they are still working and are as good as my new pair..! Anyone looking for a new pair with around £30 to spend I would recommend these for value for money, durability and the pure fact that they protect your hair a lot better than some more modern straighteners..!
Price and Availability
Only downside to these straighteners is that they are hard to buy on the high street.. Mine came from Amazon.co.uk for £29.97 but are now on there at £24.99.. Other online stores vary from £40 - £60..!
Advantages: Cheap, they do work if used on highest heat setting. Disadvantages: Doesn't stay straight for long unless used at a very high temperature.
After my old straightners broke, I went out looking for some new ones.
I didn't want anything fancy I just wanted some that would keep my hair straight.
I came across these at boots, they were reduced from £49.99 to £24.99.
The fancy packaging on them says on the front of the box 'join the shine revolution.'
They also claim to 'create no frizz, sleek hair wih up to 70% more protection from hair splitting and damage. Using the words first straightner ... ...weave, wraps and cushions the hair, striaghtening with kindness and enviable shine.'
This really appealed to me as even after using protective heat spray I still use to get some split ends with my old straightners.
The straigtners come with heat protective mat which is very useful.as they don't really have anything to keep the hot parts of it off of the surface they are placed on. They do have a heat protection stand but it is tiny and not very ...

Advantages: Turning themselves off Disadvantages: Having to have them on the highest heat to straighten my hair properly
The straighteners take roughly around one minute to heat up. The maximum temperature of which you can set the straighteners to is 200 degrees Celsius. To change the temperature there is a small wheel in which you push around in order to change the temperature between140°C - 200°C.On the side of the straighteners there is a light which flashes that flashes until the selected temperature has been reached. The best feature of these hair straighteners ... ...is good if you are the sort of person who forgets to turn them off and after all you won't want them to start a fire!
After a few months of using them I noticed my hair was starting to get damaged even though I had always used plenty of heat protection shampoos, conditioners and sprays. To avoid this I would recommend use them every 2-3 days. To manage to keep your hair straight you will need to use them on the highest heat setting possible this ...

Advantages: They design looks modern to an extent and the packaging is very slick Disadvantages: Everything about them mostly!
...have gone from GHD to Remington S2003 as although GHD are amazing but not made to last that long compared to how much they cost I decided to purchase Remington S2003 as I couldnt afford to purchase other GHDs at that time.. My hair is quite thick. I guess if a person had finer hair these may be more suitable however, they DO leave your hair dried out, so dont believe all they hype about how they dont. The item has 'JOIN THE SHINE REVOLUTION' stated ... ...seeing as since I used them my hair now resembles a haystack !!! . On the box it states that a leading trichologist said that extensive tests had showed remarkable properties drastically reducing hair damage. It would be interesting to know on what hair types the tests were carried out on! The design is terrible!!! You have to press and hold to switch on and then wait for them to heat up, and it sometimes takes over 60 seconds. There is a badly designed ...

Advantages: does the job, long cable :P Disadvantages: needing after and before care
I bought these Remington straightners from Argos about 6 months ago. The price of these then was £49.99 and I didn’t know that apparently you cab find these straightners going cheaper. During my experience of these straightners, I have found many advantages and many disadvantages. Some of the advantages of the product were:
Included with the product was a heat protection bag, this was completely useful when using heated appliances. The 3 m swivel ... ...when using these straightners, like May I have bought in the past; the cable always seems to be just a little bit smaller then needed. This is one of the reasons I chose these straightners. The price of the straightners was also very reasonable, as they are a good value for money, through bought for £49.99 after searching the internet I also have found that you can purchase the straightners for even less. The ease of use of the straightners is very ...

Advantages: cheap Disadvantages: heavy 2-3mins time to heat up
the straighteners are quick to heat up and easy to use
they have the advantage of a heat adjustment which means that you can vary the temperature, however it does not seem to make a large difference in the temperature of the ceramic plates.
these particular straighteners are particulary cheap and especially in comparism to GHD straightenrs that are a lot more expensive.
These partiuclar ones have the benefit of claiming that they damage the hair ... ...as it has still managed to dry my hair out. However as my haridresser has informed straightening hair is always bad for the condition of the hair so it is difficult to reduce the damage. The staightners do still manage to straighten the hair effectively and it does look a lot different. ...
