Here I go again writing about straighteners, except this time I have lots of nice things to say about them because they are brilliant..! Okay so my last pair of straighteners were a little bit rubbish and burnt my hair into little pieces, but these ones are fabulous and not once have a ended up burning myself on them… Hopefully I won't either.. Touch wood..!
These straighteners are of a much better quality from a much better brand in my opinion.. Personally I have always preferred Remington straighteners and curlers for that matter.. They tend to last much longer than other brands and are of a similar price so it's a winning situation, brilliant products for smaller prices, than buying GHD's.. I have never understood the fascination with GHD's especially the price when you can but a pair like mine that are easily as good at a third of the price..!
The straighteners come in a back and orange box, with 'join the shine revolution' splattered across the front. The box has an attractive flip front feature, revealing more information about the technology behind the claims. Across the whole of the box there are pictures of the straighteners showing the way in which the less breakages occur, if you need to know how it works.
The actual straighteners are around 40cm long and have about a 7cm radius. On the box they are pictured with a silver barrel, but both my pair and another pair I have used have a gold coloured barrel with the black soft touch handle. And Gold locking feature. When they first arrive they are open and a little stiff if you wanted to lock them you need to twist the handle really hard. The straighteners do have a little ledge on the back near the start of the cord to rest on any surface to hold the heat away from the surface and obviously not to melt it..!
These are not the best looking straighteners in the world but they are slim line and are light enough to hold in your hands for a long time without wanting to put them down because they are too heavy..!
The Selling Point
The box makes a big claim of up to 70% more protection from hair splitting and damage, which for a product that is meant to ply high heat to your hair is a good thing.. I can actually say it does work, my hair is a lot less split now than when I was using my other straighteners, but they aren't perfect as everyone's hair is different. To someone who's hair does not split too much these straighteners could possibly eradicate that problem totally..! They also boast the advantage of being able to provide more shine to the hair itself, another claim I can assure you it does fulfil. The plates are actually ceramic, with tourmaline ionic conditioning, and the Teflon woven fabric over the top, which at the time was exclusive to Remington.
The straighteners were very exclusive and innovative when they were first released a few years back, admittedly now they are a little less fantastic compared to the nano diamond technology we can now have for our hair, but in all fairness they do more damage to hair than is imaginable..! At least with fabric woven plates there is a layer to go through so it is not blunt heat straight on your hair leaving less of a chance to get split ends and damage.
My Opinion
Anyway back to the specifications; depending on the heat setting you actually want for these can vary the time they take to heat, the lowest temperature takes about 20 seconds but on the box it does say 60 seconds. (Mine do it faster than that..!) Only one thing I will say about the heating up process is that if you heat them up with the plates locked together be prepared for a little steam, not enough to set a smoke alarm off, but there is enough, especially on the hottest setting.
To my surprise the middle of the range of heat settings is as good as the 210° on my old pair of straighteners. So not only is the heat a lot more effective, the fabric transfers the heat to your hair at a lower temperature than other straighteners therefore holding the manufacturers claim of les damage to hair. The 200° heat setting on these straighteners do create a lot of steam on hair but I'm not to sure if that's from the straighteners or if it is singeing all the moisture out of the hair..!
As usual the straighteners have an on/off switch that must be held down to switch power on and off, but admittedly the first time I used a pair of these I couldn't turn them on (shame on me I know..!) of course a few months down the line I am more than capable of turning my own straighteners on.. The LED light on these flashes until the plates are the desired heat for your straightening..!
The cable is more than adequate for stretching across the room , depending on the size of your room obviously.. The cable swivels in the base of the barrel of the straighteners so it is easy to move around your head with them without struggling to move the straighteners, or burning yourself.
The protective mat and wrap, is a little shall we say 'brown,' not the most attractive colour for the item but never the less it does its job so really I can't complain. However I will say the small pocket that holds the barrel doesn't hold in too much heat be warned pick it up in the middle not at the barrel end of you will end up with sore fingers..!
Okay so one pair of straighteners can't be that perfect, and they're not.. Unfortunately they all have little faults, however the only major one I could find with these was the fact that the temperature gauge goes up in notches instead of actual temperature so you are never quite sure what temperature you are actually doing your hair with.
Overall
These are a brilliant pair of straighteners, that will last you at least three years, I know someone who ahs had their pair two years and they are still in perfect working order, yes the paint has rubbed and things are not as tidy on the exterior but they are still working and are as good as my new pair..! Anyone looking for a new pair with around £30 to spend I would recommend these for value for money, durability and the pure fact that they protect your hair a lot better than some more modern straighteners..!
Price and Availability
Only downside to these straighteners is that they are hard to buy on the high street.. Mine came from Amazon.co.uk for £29.97 but are now on there at £24.99.. Other online stores vary from £40 - £60..!
