An air pump is an essential part of a healthy and attractive aquarium. The fish will quickly deplete the oxygen levels in the water and suffocate, without some external means of reintroducing the air to the water. There are four main methods of achieving this: 1. Change the water regularly. This is fine for goldfish as they can tolerate this intrusion, however tropical and marine fish are more likely to die. 2. Oxygen tablets. These are like alka seltzer tablets as they fizz air into the water, (not cheap or practical for larger tanks /bowls). 3. Filter outlets. Some filters have the water outlet near the tank surface where it aerates the water by causing bubbles. 4. An air pump. An oscillating diaphragm pushes the air via a tube, to the bottom of the tank where the bubbles rise to the surface.
It is a popular misconception that the rising of the bubbles aerate the water. It is actually the bursting on the surface that releases the oxygen. This is maximised by using an airstone to break the pumped air into smaller bubbles, and is quite therapeutic to watch.

I found these pumps to be initially very quiet but they have got a louder burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr as they wore in. You can position the pump away from where you normally sit and use a longer airline if this really annoys. I have yet to find a truly quiet air pump. Let me know if you find one. I paid £12 each for my pumps from a pet shop, but the prices on-line is nearer a tenner. Thanks for reading my review, I appreciate your usefulness ratings, good luck/health Regards hvman11000
Advantages: Suitable for troipcal and goldfish Disadvantages: Quite pricey
sized length so there isn't a problem of stretching the wire from the plug to the tank. The tube that delivers the air is very long too so the pump doesn't have to be very close to the tank so positioning of it is good.
This air pump is suitable for tanks that hold between 250 and 600 litres. I chose this as I have a large aquaruim. If your tank is smaller than this then Rena do make smaller air pumps:
Renaair50 for 5 - 30 litres
Renaair 100 for 30 - 90 litres
Renaair 200 for 80 - 160 litres
Renaair 300 for 120 - 300 litres
Depending on what air pump you choose and need will vary on the amount of oxygen will be pumped into the aquarium. The Rena 400 has two air outlets which is great as it means you get twice the output, which is 400 litres of oxygen every hour.
As this is quite a large amount I don't have ...

Advantages: Compact - attractive - easy to maintain Disadvantages: DO follow their comprehensive instructions
living room I purchased a Renaair50 to replace the one supplied. The tank is very quiet and all you can hear is a gentle fizz of the bubble tube.
ADVICE - follow their instructions to the letter - they are written to apply to the Biube and as such this tank is different to any others I have kept. Join an online group for further advice and increased enjoyment.
LIGHTING - my Biube came with an led i-Light. This is a smashing piece of kit - I love it!! You can programme the inbuilt timer and the unit replicates dawn and dusk and will even provide a very attractive blue moon effect at night if desired!!
TROPICAL FISH - my set-up is tropical and this works really well - the water is CRYSTAL CLEAR - all the fish are very healthy too. PLEASE PLEASE stick to their stocking advice - it may seem slow but it will pay you back times over ...
