Well we wanted a new “super mini” and with all the gadgets and that’s when the problems started! We ordered the car from Renault London on the A40 who are owned by Renault anyway. Since we wanted an automatic and satellite navigation, air conditioning, alloy wheels, golden yellow metallic and a sunroof we expected a factory order so that wasn’t a surprise.
However having indicated 8 – 10 weeks delivery when the week came, NO car? What was the reason, remembering that all the way through we had checked the progress on our order with Renault London who linked to the factory manufacturing computer systems, sorry the satellite navigation was being upgraded and delivery would be another 6 weeks! So the week the car was due for delivery all of a sudden it wasn’t even made!
We mumbled under our breath, shared our feelings with Renault London and Renault UK and waited! Well it arrived and we took delivery having checked it out thoroughly after all, who knows what they had forgotten, yes the drivers manual that told you how the Sat Nav worked was missing, that only took 12 phone calls, 3 months and by then we had figured it out, to arrive. If the picture of Renault London and Renault UK is one of disorganised chaos you’ve seen the right picture. Directors too busy in meetings to talk to you, never return phone calls and when they do, never get anything done, yes that’s Renault UK! Its no surprise they get such a low rating for service from their customers!
Well now to Clio, she’s not been too bad, remember we bought her for my wife because we live in the country and wanted a reliable car, well within the first 6 weeks Clio stopped working, she didn’t actual stop dead, just hic hic a couple of times and then dead!
Our local Renault garage in Bath sorted out the software bug in the engine management system and since then reliability hasn’t been a problem; but then she doesn’t do many miles; about 4000 a year. Well we also wanted an economical car and there’s NO way that Clio can be said to be that, drive at 40 mph and like a saint and you might see 34mpg which is frankly for a small auto 1.4 horrendous.
Now to the paintwork, years ago Renault made the pocket rocket car of the decade in the Renault 5 turbo, we had one and there wasn’t anything that could catch you unless they had bought a supercar or paid 10 times more. But the turbo’s paint and body were so fragile that anyone opening a door in a multi-storey car park had you praying that they didn’t dent you, and nine times out of ten, your prayers went unheard and you got yet another dent!
Well Clio’s made from the same stuff, yes there’s a rubbing strip along the body; but the metals as fragile as a baby’s bottom and the paint finish is as soft and thin as a baby’s skin, so you have been warned. Park it next to a 4x4 and cry when they open the doors!
Well what’s good about Clio, well its comfortable and very pleasant to drive, yes we would have liked options like electric seats, leather and luxury which old 5 models could be bought with but that’s not to be from Renault. Would I buy another, remains to be seen how Clio pans out, but the jury is out now!
Advantages: Very comfortable & v.good drive Disadvantages: Reliability
My first car was, or more specifically, is an L-Reg Clio 1.4 RT, second hand, and although it does have it's ups and downs, like any hatchback does, it is predominantly a good drive.
Comfort - this is one of the first things you can analyse from a car, and the Clio comes out well. It's seat patterning appears to be from the Picasso sketchbook (not that that hinders the comfort mind!), but the seats are shaped perfectly and produce optimum comfort ... ...always a touchy subject with hatchbacks, due to the simple reason being the lack of it! Although the front seats are adjustable, and therefore the space for those two in the car is fine, if people are in any of the rear three seats, particular grown-ups, they mind find it uncomfortable, and be mighty relieved when the journey is over! Although in all honesty, there are worse options for space in the hatchback market, so I'll try not to discredit ...

Advantages: Low road tax, good around town and on the motorway Disadvantages: Spare tyre really is only for emergencies
...owner a 1.4, 5 door Renault Clio for almost a year now and had been impressed with a car. As an accountant I know not to buy a brand new car and bought my W reg car when it had just passed its first birthday. Of course I benefited from the fact that the car had depreciated by about 25% on the original purchase price of approximately £10,000 in that short spell. What I didn't realise was why the previous owner had decided to place the car in part ... ...valves had stopped working (yes Renault dictates that you instead have to buy the whole works at a cost of around £500 (minimum)).
* and now low and behold it needs a new can shaft only 4 months later.
* the fact that you cannot get the running specifications of the car unless you go to a Renault dealer (and even the garage it originally came from can't find them!)

Advantages: Reliable, efficient and relatively nippy Disadvantages: small, under-powered when laden
Summary
The L-reg clio 1.4 RT was purchased from a friend of friend who I trusted for £500. Averaged size hatchback, 1.4 so nippy unless laiden with 3+ passengers/luggage. Good fuel consumption, up to 350miles per fuel tank. Generally a good little car. Background
I brought this car as a cheap replacement for my first run-around. The clio is comfortable car for short/medium journeys, seat suck u in (with their funky patterns) and create a good ... ...hot and car interior heating is below satisfactory. Comfort
The space is a compromise between front and back seats, uless a v short legged family (or children), either the driver or passenger behind the driver has limited leg room. Would not recommend having 5 people in the car, as performance is limited and space is non-existant. Having more than 3 grown up people in the car will lead to discomfort and some loss of acceleration etc. But that is ...

Advantages: Handles itself well in and out of town, cheap insurance Disadvantages: Lack of Space, Unusual tyre size,
I bought this car, a 1.4 s in 2000, being of slightly younger years I was drawn to the car with its perky 1400 engine coupled with group 4 insurance with a spec of kit which includes white dials, alloys, fogs and sporty seats, sounds good doesnt it, and generally it is!
Coming up towards the 350000 miles mark its still as nippy as it ever was, in fact it has bedded in nicely to handle as well as my K reg 1.4RT i had previously. Servicing has been ... ...blade replacements being of greatest cost.
Its not all good though, the odd wheel spin was quickly kept in check after replacing two front tyres - it seems the tyre size is very rare and so therefore quite expensive - expect to pay anything from 50 to 75 pounds each, not particularly welcome on a car this size.
Space is also at a premium, ok- i know if i wanted space i should have bought a laguna!... if you're tall you'll find enough headroom by ...

Advantages: Reliable Nippy Compact Disadvantages: Small in the back, not a good rearview.
I bought this car 5 years ago, it was a good price and at the time of buying I was really impressed.
It looks nice, although I think it's more suited to females, than males (unless you have the Clio Williams, then that is more masculine!)
Features
Central locking
Dual airbags
Engine Immobiliser
Drivers seat height adjuster
3 seatbelts in the back that are all over the shoulder - yes including the middle
Isofix child safety mount system
Electronic ... ...remote control on the steering wheel
Cigarette/cigar lighter and ashtray (ashtray can double up as a small storage tray - which I use as)
Power assisted steering
ABS
Electric windows
Tool kit with spare wheel
I am happy with my car, haven't had any problems apart from when my electric window wouldn't go up, but it was cheap enough to fix at a local garage. (About £50)
The rearview isn't all that great, as it's smaller, however I think it seemed ...

Advantages: Spceous boot. Plenty of legroom. Radio controlled by buttons on side of driving wheel. Disadvantages: Petrol version only does about 30-40MPG.
I may be young but I have been in and drove quie a few cars.
It was one of my best decisions to get rid of my 12 year old rover 214 for a renaultclio expression 1.4.
Plus the one I have has the great feature of a panoramic sunroof, even if it does only open half the length of the car, you can still see out the roof in the back and it has a small button to twist and then it opens however much you want it to.
Although I wanted the one with the sunroof I thought it was more important than the petrol.
I would suggest getting a diesel version rather than a petrol model, mine is a petrol and it does on average 35MPG, goes up to about 55 on the motorway. Whereas the diesel can do about 60MPG.
This car has plenty of legroom and a very spacious boot.
The way that the radio is controlled is a lot easier on the driver, has a volume lever ...
Advantages: Slick looks, Well equipped, great handling Disadvantages: Slow, with some real problems
cold, vaguely rubbery material that feels slightly creepy to the touch - now imagine driving around touching it all day. *shudder*
Brakes - Maybe its just because my hire car had only 1200 miles on it, but it seemed as though the brakes on the new Clio only had two stages - Not slowing down fast enough, and Throw you through the windscreen.
No middle ground at all - slight pressure on the pedal does nothing, 2oz of pressure more and your seat belt is the only thing keeping you from sitting in the back seat of the car in front!
Performance - With VW managing to get a 170BHP from a 1.4litre Polo, and the new Modus GT producing 100BHP from a 1.2 Turbo, you might expect that a 1.4 16V with 98BHP would be a stalwart performer - nippy and quick, the small car with a lotta go. Unfortunately the size and weight of this clio is like having three ...
Advantages: Looks nice and sporty ish Disadvantages: Not reliable - dodgy electrics!
I bought this car from a friend in May 05. I have been in the car when she's driving and i know she's an overly careful driver. She also had it serviced when it was supposed to and took good care of it.
When I took the car over, I did exactly the same. Looked after it and had it serviced. It never failed an MOT or anything like that.
I eventually, part exchanged it when the following happened......
Lights failed when I was driving down a country road1 they both went at the same time, i could have crashed.
I had to call out the RAC five times in three days when it wouldn't turn over when I tried to start it.
Lights woudn't work properly. I had to sit in the car for up to 40 minutes whilst trying to trick it into working properly. it seems like dodgy electrics, because it worked after a while when I ept trying to put the lights on. ...
