I was initially a bit apprehensive about only having a 1.6 engine compared to my previous 1.8 laguna, but this new 16v engine has far more power than it's 1.8 predecessor and unless you are a boy racer or a caravaner you'll find it has ample power. It's best points are: a) Terrific handling. You really feel safe puuting it into corners. b) Cavernous luggage space. c) Good layout inside and very comfortable. d) Excellent value for money Not so good points: e) Visibility not so hot. f) Ride could be improved upon.

I bought this Laguna nearly new because of the combination of equipment and price.
This is a great Laguna model because you get everything that matters (air con, CD, elec windows, ESR) but not unimportant things (alloys, cruise control, etc).
The 1.6 16v engine has adequate performance whilst still being reasonably economical. It is also in a significantly lower insurance group than the 1.8 16v model and the old 1.8 model which has a reputation ...

This review is not based on a purchase but on an extended period of driving a loaned car.
First impressions are good, the doors feel solid and the tailgate is heavy. The car has flowing lines and looks smart with its small round fog lights under the bumper.

...bought a 1.6 16v Authentique Renault Laguna in Grey. Initial feelings were that this is a very good car at a reasonable price.
Equipment
All the usual toys come as standard, Air Con, Power Steering, CD / Radio with RDS, which I think are probably the standard items these days. The CD is only a single disc unit, no stacker as standard, which if your like me and usually have the radio on, won't cause any real problems, but if you are a real CD user, ... ...needed lubricating, which my local Renault dealer did and that sorted it completely. Being over 6 feet tall, my seat is just about fully back, which doesn't leave a massive amount of room, but enough for most usual journeys.
Running Costs
I have been told that I am 'heavy on the gas', but this is the best car I've had for fuel economy. I only have a 10 min drive to work, but would travel to work, home for lunch, back to the office and home in the ...

I have owned a second hand 1.6 16v Sport Laguna (reg. in 2000) now for 6 months. My previous car was a 1.8, 8v, 1996 Laguna RT. Compared to the 1.8, the Sport has the added extras of improved trim and alloy wheels.
Handling is good on all models but the lower profile tyres on the Sport give more tyre-steer but tighter cornering. The 1.6 engine has to work harder, but the 16v compensates for the lower power of the 8v engine. 1.6 is comparatively ... ...machine. As a result there is extra engine noise but not a significant distraction for me.
Safety is improved with twin front air bags and has ABS fitted.
Equipment level is generous with elect sunroof, elect front windows, CD player/radio with controls on steering column.
Comfort level is good (which is one of the main reasons why I got another one!) and can seat 5 adults easily. ...

I have had my Laguna 1.6 16v Alize for 5 years now. It was two years old when I bought it on a 2000 W reg plate. I have to say that in those five years it has brought me nothing but joy. A good size, practical and reliable family car that does as it should. It comes with all of the gadgets that you would expect and certainly delivers in the comfort stakes. Electric front windows, electric sunroof, CD player, Air Con, Steering wheel controls and even ... ...of the most comfortable cars available.
The 1600cc 16v engine delivers more than adequate power and potential owners should not be put off by the seemingly small engine capacity for a car of this size. The ride is firm without being sports car like stiff and corner handling is well above average with minimal body roll.
The main points I have had to address during my ownership are Air Con top ups (this is down to wear and tear and is expected), ...

I have owned a 1999 Laguna1.6 Sport from new and have covered 90,000miles. Other than a few minor stone chips the body work is in very good condition - no rust. Very economical for a 1.6 - I drive sensibly and get around 42 MPG. I have been very pleased with the car and plan to keep it for a least another year. Only problem I have had is a water pump failure, so I changed the cam belt at the same time (66k). I am still on the original clutch, and other than the water pump, rear exhaust silncer (2) and new tyres all the other parts are original. I have today took it for its MOT and unfortunately I need some new brake pipes (corrosion) and a near side lower ball joint. Overall I think I have had good value from my Laguna over the years - a very trustworthy and reliable car. ...

I my RenaultLaguna1.8 RT about 2 years ago. Unlike other cars this one isnt afraid of being thrown around a bit. It has a lower centre of gravity than other hatchbacks I have driven and therefore has very good handling.Not only does this car handle well, it is in my opinion one of the sportiest looking hatchbacks around.Feul effecientcy is excellent. Smooth drive and very reliable. For the price I paid I got a wide selection of gadgets and gizmos to keep me amuzed. I particularly like the radio control behind the steering wheel which is very user friendly.Id definitly recommend this car to anyone.It may be economical but it looks and handles like a car which should cost alot more than what you paid for. ...

We recently bought was of those and we are really pleased with its performance and economy. It was cheap insurance and cheap tax. Good to run and stylish design.
We downgraded from a 1.6i RenaultLaguna to try and save on fuel costs but were worried about performance being affected but we were suprised as to how nippy the car was. It does rev higher that most other cars however this is parts of the sports spec.
It is spacious and has plenty of boot space. We have a 5 door model and it has plenty of room in the rear, which is normally where we ending sitting the parents when we go out.
The only thing to be careful of is the head gaskets. Apparently these are renouned for going so ensure that you check thoroughly before buying one. On the other hand, parts are cheap and easy to come by. ...
