Review of "Renault Megane 1.9 dCi Hatchback"
Well it looks like Renault have done it agin with yet another solid built, reliable motor. I've had my Megane for just over 2 years now and I must admit, it has taken some abuse in that time from my less cautious driving style (no crashes, just good old fashioned hard driving, A to B asap). If buying new, the options package for the car is extensive with some nice additions such as keyless car - just touch the drivers door handle and the car unlocks, but only for you. Automatic lights and windscreen wipers, air conditioning and more airbags than you can shake a stick at, all as standard. The option of an auto-dimming rear view mirror for night driving and the list goes on....
There were a few faults during the first 5000 miles the main being electrical, which Renault have now fixed with a new design. The main electrics box (brain) in the engin compartmet was poorly designed and let water into the electrics so if you buy one of these second hand, make sure it has had this unit replaced with the new version. The automatic headlights were also a problem. The sensor that activates them is designed to work in southern latitudes so needs minor adjusting to compensate for daylight levels if you live in the UK.17" Alloy wheels and low profile tyres are an option if buying new. Be warned! Although they improve handling dramatically you will need to shop around for tyres. The first time I went to replace mine, I was quoted £800 for 4 tyres by a national tyre dealer. I've since located a local dealer selling them for £240 a set. Also, expect to get as little as 6000 miles from the factory fitted tyres. If your dealer allows you to choose your own tyres, go for a harder compund. I now get around 15000 miles from a set of tyres (driving on twisty country roads).
54,000 miles on.....No breakdowns. They bodywork is still almost immaculate except for some small paint chips immediately in front of the rear wheel arches. This may be a result of the bigger wheels. The interior is still like new and the drivers seat is still firm. The engine is still going strong and running very quiet. The only real problem I have noticed is that the suspension is beginning to feel saggy and a new set of springs and shocks on the front will be on the horizon soon.
All in all, its a great car and still turns heads. I wont be trading it in any time soon!
