Renault present the Megane Coupe Cabriolet Dynamique 1.6 16v VVT Convertible with 5 Speed - (Man) / 4 Speed - (Auto), Front (FWD) running on Unleaded Petrol
Advantages: Looks, handling, individuality Disadvantages: space (but you are buying a coupe!)
The car: MEGANECOUPE 1999 1.616V Sports Alize phase 2
I have had the car for 4-5 years now and guess I can judge how well the MeganeCoupe has faired for me. Many reviews here don't seem to distinguise whether it is the phase 1 or phase 2 models. Phase 1 models are usually 8V whereas the phase 2 models are 16V and have a slightly different front and back styling.
The picture shown above is of a phase 2 car and is the hatchback version NOT the coupe!
Here I review my car which is the phase 2 Coupe model. In the review I'll talk about ownership and possible problems...including those which I have had :-)
THE LOOKS
I have owned the car for about 5 years now and still find driving it a joy, the individuallity, the styling and those double optic headlamps really do something for me! I have not seen a car, since the 5 ...
Advantages: Cheap, good looking, er cheap & good looking Disadvantages: It's not a Porsche
Haviing bought the megane1.6 cc in November 2006 i've been patiently waiting for some nicer weather to get a real feel for the car.
Most reviews focus on how under powered this car is, with some reviews being an excuse to just moan about build quality. I'm here to set the record straight. it's true; it's never going to beat a porsche from the lights but that's not the point. It's a great car for pootling around in, with the roof down on a sunny day. It hasn't got the pose value of some other cabriolets but you can pick them up for very little (try £8k off a 6 month old model from one of the car supermarkets!) This puts a six month old car into the £11k bracket; understand where I'm coming from now?
The boot is perfectly adequate with the roof up. Guess what? If you need to fold a big roof into a boot its going to take up some room ...
Advantages: Excellent car, fantastic on a warm day, not bad price for convertible Disadvantages: Very poor visibility out of back window
I went looking for a small hatchback and looked at all the usual ones, Peugeot 206, Renault Clio, Fiat Punto, etc. I had actually gone to the garage to view a Peugeot but was told it has been sold. The guy showed me the Megane and my initial thoughts were it was too big for the likes of me, me who is used to small hatchbacks! He persuaded me to do a test drive and after seeing the roof down, I bought it.
I was taken by the room in the back (compared to the Peugeot 206 cabriolet) and have had two adults in there - not bad for 2 door cabriolet. I had sat in an MG and other such two seater cars and wondered if my daughter and I and all our baggage could possibly fit in - this seemed to have the best of both - sporty look plus additional seats/space.
I am subsequently quite pleasantly surprised by the amount of features this car ...
