Not many subjects bring about as much hysterical laughter, or conversely acute embarrassment, such as trapped wind!
Nonetheless, past the jollity that our little 'trumps', 'bottom burps' (or whatever your own preferred nouns for these afflictions of nature ARE), lays a condition which can cause a lot of discomfort and pain.
Sometimes a congested tummy can be excruciating business, brought on by many factors; stress, anxiety, certain medical conditions, over indulgence in rich foods, or simply eating in a hurry, to name but a few.
Having first seen these advertised on the TV, the product that my family and I have come to rely upon and have done for the past year, is Rennie 'Deflatine'.
**PACKAGING**
Please note there is no leaflet inside the box; so do retain the box for referral.
For quite a 'sensitive' subject the packaging in my opinion is a bit too loud. A bright orange and sunny yellow cardboard box, complete with bold white lettering, houses 18 chewable tablets. It's a slim to fit conveniently into any glove compartment, medicine box or cupboard. Under the product name the words 'sugarfree mint' refer to the flavour.
The manufacturers claims on the front say:
Fast effective relief from trapped wind
Bloatedness
Fullness after food
Much the same information is given on the reverse of the box, only in more detail. Being an antacid too, the magic addition to these tablets as opposed to your average antacid tablet, is an ingredient called 'simethicone'. The manufacturers say…'It acts to gently disperse the trapped 'air bubbles' thus helping to eliminate the symptoms discreetly and without embarrassment.'
*Other information given is that 'Deflatine' may be taken during pregnancy.
The box I have on the date of this review has got an expiry date of 07.2009, so their shelf life is excellent!*INGREDIENTS*
Aside of simethicone, these tablets contain calcium carbonate, heavy magnesium carbonate, magnesium stearate, potato starch, pregelatinised maize starch, talc, mint & lemon flavour, and sorbitol.
It is stated that the inclusion of sorbitol, may result in a laxative effect in some people.**Warnings & When to seek Advice**
*People with fructose intolerance should NOT take this product!
If antibiotics, tetracyclines or other prescribed medicines are being taken, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking.
If you have any unusual effects after taking this product, if you have taken too many tablets, or if your symptoms persist, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Keep out of reach of children!**Dosage & Directions for Use**
As soon as any discomfort is felt, suck or chew 1 or 2 tablets up to a maximum of 16 tablets in 24 hours.
**PURCHASE & USAGE**
A saving grace with these tablets is that you can acquire them quite easily, over the counter of any chemist or supermarket shelf. I always buy our 'Deflatine' from Tescos or Wilkinsons, as I'm likely to have a trolley with me, and I can quickly bury them under a lot of other shopping. Just don't forget to pay for them at the check out though. (Oh the shame!)
Being lactose-intolerant myself, means my tummy is a battleground at the best of times, and after eating a 'Sunday roast' is usually when my tummy starts to create. Not because there's lactose in the meal, just that I find this a rich meal in comparison to my usual diet.
I suddenly feel very sluggish, sometimes queasy, and then the telltale sharp intermittent pains ensue. But rather than having to give up my Sunday feasts, I know from experience that I will only have to take usually one Deflatine tablet, and shortly all will be well. One tablet suffices if I take it quick enough, and in over a year's usage I've only ever had to take two tablets on two occasions. (Anybody who's ever had to take the maximum dose of 16 has my fullest sympathy!)
Inside the box the 18 tablets are packaged in 3 x foil strips, each containing 6 tablets. The indentations alongside each tablet, lends them to be easily detached, should you wish to pop a few in your purse or wallet. I find it simple to tear open the foil and access the almost white, chalky tablet. A groove across the centre looks handy, for splitting the tablet in half if required. I should imagine this to be especially useful for younger users.
The tablet itself is slightly smaller than a 5p coin and about twice the depth. It is smooth to the touch and fresh looking. I personally prefer to suck rather than chew the tablets as I find this more soothing. Whilst sucking there is a slight chalky feeling to my mouth, but the cool mint flavour encumbers a lot of this, and the result is very pleasant. I am not aware of a lemon flavour at all, but I believe it adds a fresh edge to the minty taste. My sucking eventually leads to the tablet dividing into 2 or 3 little pieces, which in turn dissolve without any grittiness or trouble. The whole experience is very pleasing and the one tablet takes only a couple of minutes to completely disappear, leaving no particular nasty after taste.**RESULTS**
I find after 15 mins to half an hour later I begin to reap the benefits. First I stop feeling nauseous, then I feel more active, and my tummy generally feels calmer. It feels less blocked, bloated and more comfortable. I'm also aware that my gastric juices are quieter, and the intermittent pains of trapped wind abate.
Any wind that has to come out can be expelled politely, and in the proper place! My experience has been that it isn't delivered in a violent fashion, more a polite succession of little 'pups'. I'm not taken by surprise as I'm given a gentle 'alert' and therefore I feel in control of the situation. This 'alert' makes it possible to retire to somewhere private, should you be so inclined.
I'm always amazed at the lack of wind expelled, in comparison to the pain and aggro it caused. Indicating to me, these tablet's prowess at being able to reduce the amount of 'possible' wind.
So usually within 30 mins to an hour, my ailing stomach's fire is put out, and peace and dignity are restored!**CONCLUSIONS**
I can't recommend 'Rennie Deflatine' highly enough. Before we began using these tablets we always bought cheaper supermarket antacids, which although quite good tasted very chalky and would take much longer to work. Plus, I would usually end up taking far more of them and even the results could be erratic and somewhat disappointing. The inclusion of the ingredient simiethicone here definitely seems to be the distinguishing bonus factor from your average antacid tablet. The speed and efficiency with which these tablets act, and their ability to soothe associated symptoms of indigestion quickly, makes these tablets, in my opinion, far superior in strength to any similar product I have experienced.
As mentioned before, accessibility is very good, and 18 of these 'chewable tablets' will cost you in the region of £2.36-2.49, which I think is very good value.
Aside of the brightness of the box, my only other gripe is the omission of a lower recommended age limit for usage. I e-mailed the manufacturers, on this question, as well as whether or not they contain lactose? I also enquired as to whether they can be purchased in any other denominations? This was their reply on 5th April this year:
'We do not recommend that any Rennie tablets are given to children under 6. I'm pleased to confirm that Rennie Deflatine do not contain lactose and that they also come in backs of 36, normally retailing at £5.29.'Of course my husband is the biggest user of these tablets, and both he and the rest of my family, all find them equally amiable and very good. None of us have experienced any negative side effects whatsoever.
Regardless of a couple of minor gripes, I've decided not to deduct any stars from the rating, so impressed with this product am I. Rennie Deflatine, in my opinion, are highly dependable and consistent, in their ability to treat and quell trapped wind and associated symptoms. I find it a great comfort to always have some 'to hand', whether at home, or whether we're out.
As the saying goes… 'Always be prepared… dib, dib, dib…' Best wishes.www.rennie.co.uk

Advantages: Work OK in the right conditions Disadvantages: Don't work that quickly
...a new marketing ploy for Rennie Deflatine (made by Roche Consumer Health). They should sell two types: one for discrete passing of wind (Deflatine Discreet) and one for losing it at once in a loud bang as it were (this could be called Deflatine Fast Acting Remedy Time [or FART] and only used when you are alone or with a sympathetic parner).
We were still waiting for the fast relief 20 minutes later, but the packet does say that you should take them ... ...find a garage that sold them for 40 miles). He was feeling mildly better, but not cured. About 30 minutes after taking them we arrived home. My partner took off his tight trousers and lay down on the bed and finally he started feeling better. A few mildly windy events occurred but nothing too noisy or unpleasant (much to his disgust). My conclusion therefore is that they can help with the symptoms but you need to take them early and not sit scrunched ...

Advantages: They certainly work Disadvantages: Taste a bit chalky
Arghhh, ouch, oomph, urghhhh, ouch, ouch and ouch again! Arghh, arghh, arghh and another ouch just for good measure!
What is going on I hear you ask? Well, I've not converted to one of the 90 word brigade who is struggling to come up with enough words, and contrary to popular belief I've not gone mad, well not completely mad that is. No, I've got heartburn, indigestion, acid indigestion, call it what you will, and it bloody hurts!
I've been getting ... ...for the past 6 months, I've no idea why, maybe it's all that fast livin' with loose women (well, maybe not too many loose women, more too much spicy and fried food). Indigestion doesn't sound to sinister, but it's bloomin' painful and bloody anoying, especially if you've just spent £40 on a lovely meal and have the afterglow spoilt by heartburn! Besides, I'm only 26 years old. I wouldn't mind so much if I was an old grandad, as you tend to expect ...

...excited by the discovery of Rennie Deflatine, which claims to relieve the embarrassment and pain of trapped wind. So happy to have come across a medicine that may make my life a lot easier, I purchased this product without even checking the price.
That very evening, I encountered severe pain that I knew was trapped wind, and immediately reached for the packet of Rennie Deflatine. I sucked two tablets as recommended and laid (literally) in wait. ... ...this in mind, I think Rennie Deflatine is a very good product. If it can sort me out, it can sort anyone out!! Advantages: Effective relief, with a pleasant taste. Disadvantages: Even slight overdosing makes you feel very ill.
...is your saviour :-
Rennie is the ultimate relieve from the nightmare hangover as well as acid indigestion, heartburn, nervous indegestion, acidity, flatulence, upset stomach, dyspepsia and biliousness.
The packets come in handy sizes of 48 and are very reasonably priced at £2-3. These can be found at most pharmaceuticals and supermarkets. The thing that makes this product better than similar like Anadin etc is that they are for you to chew or suck ... ...for 12 year olds to adults, is two to be taken and can be taken upto 8 times a day. For 6-12 year olds, two to be taken upto 4 times a day. Under 6s are not recommended to take it. One thing to mind with the dosage though, is that you should take care not to exceed the dosage as you can end up being very ill.
Overall this is a great over-the-counter product and provides effective relief from many pains and illnesses, I strongly recommend it :) ...
