Having always been a huge fan of Resident Evil 4 on the PS2 prior to me trading it in to go towards my Wii, I had been about to buy the Gamecube version when this title was announced.
The game involves Leon S. Kennedy (of Resi Evil 2 fame) now a fully paid up government employee, on the trail of the US Presidents daughter who had been kidnapped and taken to a small village in Europe (exact location never really specified but they speak some variation on Spanish) containing very hostile locals.
This game has one major difference than the other resident evil plots in that the main throng of enemies are not zombies... saying what they are gives away a part of the plot... so I wont.
Game play wise there are also differences, in previous RE titles, it has been a case of think first shoot later as your ammo may not last. This isn't such a problem here as many parts of the game involve you fire-fighting your way through large volumes of enemies (a typical run through apparently, as I've never counted, can involve the deaths of around 1000 poorly dressed Europeans, monks, etc so not that much of a small village after all..)
The enemies usually feel like that are of little threat... until you get too close then they present a very genuine sense of peril. Enemies in the game vary from Villagers, to Monks, to Chainsaw bearing people, it's best to let it from all the way to the main enemies henchmen.
This version has the better graphics than any of the previous versions although it's purely had a polish rather than being rewritten especially for the more powerful Wii. To be fair the majority of settings are dark, moody affairs so the look of the game would have been difficult to enhance any meaninful way.
The soundtrack is the same as before with the villagers speech still as unnerving as ever and the building music adding to tension at all the right moments.
The controls are where this game comes into it's own. The use of the wiimote to aim and shoot and nunchuck to move works perfectly. The wiimote is very responsive and once your used to it (which does not take long at all) it feels second nature to be playing like this. If you are not a fan of it, the game also supports both the classic controller and gamecube controller for more traditional game play.
Content wise, the game is the same as the PS2 version, which is slightly disappointing. Although these features are new to nintendo, I feel a chance was wasted to put an extra Wii exclusive feature or two in to the game. Maybe even a preview of the Umbrella Chronicles? However the features still include separate ways, the Ada Wong game than runs along side and helps explain Adas presence in the main game and her other relationships with Resident Evil characters.
Overall this game is and always has been great, here it's has a polish and a significant upgrade to the controls, making it an essential purchase for Wii owners (that are over 15!)
