-- Summary --

Resident evil 4 is a revolutionary addition to the series which hurls government agent Leon into a mysterious village ruled over by an evil religious cult. The player will have to use all of their wits, with the help of a wide range of weaponry, to battle their way through hordes of enemies, epic boss battles, and a wide range of locations in an effort to rescue the presidents daughter and escape alive.
I would not hesitate for an instant in recommending this title. Any horror and action fans will wonder how they ever lived without it.

-- Introduction --

Resident Evil 4 is a revolutionary addition to the Resident Evil series in that it did away with the 'fixed camera angles' as well as a lot of the original control system. Many players believed this would prove unsuccessful. They were very wrong.

Players take the role of Leon S Kennedy (also the protagonist of RE2), a government agent hired to rescue the president's daughter from the clutches of a mysterious religious cult in a European village.

Resident evil 4 deviates from the original series in that the 'zombies' are infected with a mind-controlling 'parasite', as opposed to the umbrella created viruses seen in the previous games. This does add an element of originality, however, in that the enemies are able to communicate, set traps, and use a number of weapons against you (such as pitchforks, axes, crossbows, and even chainsaws). These are not your average zombies, and present a much greater threat than ever before.

-- Gameplay --

The game itself is comprised mostly of attempting to reach locations and killing everything that gets in your way. This is never as simple as it sounds, as the enemies will use a number of strategies to try and get the better of you. There are also a number of puzzles, but some of them are optional, and the necessary ones provide little challenge.
The game includes a number of epic boss battles with nightmarish creatures. Most of these battles require brains as well as brawn.
There is a very set course through the game, which involves a minimal amount of backtracking. I have never found myself lost about where to go whilst playing, and if you do, there are always highlighted maps to help you out.
For a lot of the game, you will be required to protect the President's daughter. This usually involves instructing her to 'hide', 'wait' or 'follow'. She is unable to defend herself in any way, which can become frustrating. Enemies will attempt kill her or carry her off, their success in either would end the game, so make sure this doesn't happen.

After completing the main game, players can choose to restart the game keeping all of the items, life bar, and money from their previous game. I have played through the game over five times, and I never tire of it.

Several new mini games are unlocked, as well as a number of new weapons which can be bought and used in the main game. A number of new costumes are also made available.

-- Difficulty --

Two difficulty settings are available at the beginning; normal and easy. The easy mode differs in that the enemies are generally easier to kill, ammo is more readily available, and you start off with a shotgun. Normal mode players will start off with a handgun and a moderate amount of ammo.

A Professional mode becomes available after completion of Normal mode to provide players with an extra challenge if they wish. Personally I've yet to complete this mode, it is very difficult.

If you become stuck on a boss battle, there is an option to buy a one-shot rocket launcher from the merchant to make easy pickings of most of them.

Although some of the puzzles are vital to the completion of the game, they provide little challenge so you needn't worry about them.

Overall, I believe that this game would be suitable for a range of players. It provides a good scale of difficulty levels for those just starting out, or those players seeking a real challenge.

--Interface -

Leon and the president's daughter both have visible life gauges at the bottom right of the screen, this is represented by a curved bar with a green fill. Yellow herbs can be used to increase the life-bar. Several healing items are available throughout the game, ranging from first-aid sprays to chicken eggs.

The player can find or buy more weapons from the mysterious merchant as they progress through the game (such as the shotgun, rifle, and tmp). Most of the weapons can also be upgraded for increased firepower, capacity, reload speed, and firing rate.

Leon carries with him an attaché case, which acts as an inventory. It consists of a number of square spaces, and each item takes up a different number of spaces. For example, the handgun takes up 6 spaces, an ammo box takes up 2 spaces, etc. The attaché case can be upgraded to include more item spaces.

-- Controls --

The controls can seem a little complicated at first, but they come with practice. Both a controller and nun-chuck are required. Players move with the control stick on the nun-chuck. They can take aim with the B trigger, then point at the screen with the wii-remote (very much like a light gun) and press A to fire. Most weapons work in this way, with the exception of the rifles. This system is exclusive to the Wii version of the game, and having played the Gamecube and PS2 versions, I found it to be a very welcome addition.

-- Graphics --

Leon will have to fight his way through a massive range of beautifully rendered 3D locations. It's difficult to not be distracted by them. The graphics are quite breathtaking in every aspect, from characters and enemies, locations and buildings, to stunning special effects. Though the graphics have not changed much from the GameCube version, they remain to be very impressive.

-- Sound --

The music used increases suspense and helps to create a terrifying atmosphere of survival horror. Sounds are also used very effectively, there's nothing scarier than hearing a chainsaw and not knowing where it's coming from. The villagers communicate in Spanish, and knowing what they are saying can be useful; especially when they shout 'behind you'.
The only downside is the voice of the presidents daughter, which can, in my experience, make you want to shoot her after a while; sadly, doing so ends the game.

-- Price and Availability --

The cheapest that I have seen it is £27.00 from Morrisons. It may be available cheaper elsewhere though. Price comparison sites such as pricerunner.co.uk can be useful.

-- Personal Experience --

Admittedly, I first played this game for the Gamecube. I enjoyed it so much that I also bought the limited edition version on PS2 (a regrettable decision because of the lack of new features), and then on the Wii. The control system on the Wii proved to be the most enjoyable of all.

I have played through this game over twenty times. There are some new things to unlock and work towards, but overall I replayed it because of the fantastic gameplay. There are quite a few hidden locations and I usually find something new on each replay.

In my opinion, this game is the best of its kind that I have ever played; I would definitely recommend it to horror and action fans. I pity anyone who misses out on playing this groundbreaking title.

I liked this game, although I do think it was a little overhyped, and a bit short.
