The last Resident Evil game I played was the original on the playstation years ago when it first came out. I remember being tucked away in my mates attic room in the dark played it. I'm sure everybody remembers the first time they encountered the dogs jumping through the windows, that made me jump like you wouldn't believe and still the thought of it makes me shudder.
I eventually found that the controls on that game were really quite clunky and I lost count of the number of times I ended up dead in what should have been a fairly simple situation, just because I was struggling with the camera view and couldn't get it round right to allow me to aim at whatever zombie etc was approaching.
I have since stayed away from such games on consoles as I have never found the controls to be very natural, unlike using a mouse and keyboard on the PC. However, I read reviews of this game and how the control system for the wii was vastly improved, so when I saw it a a good price I took and chance and purchased it.
My initial impressions were very good, the graphics while not as mind blowing as can these days be found on the PC or Xbox 360/Playstation 3, were very very impressive. Great use of a subdued palette gave a wonderful look to the game and really created masses of atmosphere. Apart from the occasional slight oddity/stiffness of the characters in some of the cut scenes, I personally wouldn't say you would ever need graphics better than these.
I was also very impressed with the audio, great sound effects from the environment and plenty (or on occasions disturbingly few) atmospheric sounds really helped to build the creppy effect of the town and emmerse you in the game. Again, I really don't think this could be improved upon.
Although my initial attempts at control were a little wild, I soon found the controls to be very good indeed, much better than any 3d game I've played on a console before. There are slight niggles such as not being able to run and shoot but I guess those are a part of this genre of game as it causes more disorientation and panic as you are playing which helps with the survival feeling of the game. I think I am probably to used to first person shooters on the PC. After a few long sessions, I completely forgot about my niggles and found it very natural to control.
The storyline of the game slowly unfolds before you as you explore and discover objects and complete sections as there are plenty of cut scenes to watch. A lot of games fall down on their story, however this one stands strong and is interesting and makes you want to continue playing through the game to find out more.
My only problem with this game, is most likely due to me not being the worlds greatest gamer. I am absolutely stuck on one of the bosses. I tried so many times to defeat him but kept failing. In the end I looked up how to beat him in some online guides. Following their advice I still just can not get past this big horrible meany, which has caused me to come to a complete halt, which has left me having not played the game for a couple of months. This is a real shame for me because up until this point I was absolutely loving the game.
Maybe when the nights start drawing in and the days get colder I'll fire up this game again and try to defeat the boss and continue on. This is very unlike me, often if I end up stuck in a game I will never play it again and totally lose the desire to do so, but with this game I really really want to get back to it because it really is great fun....very tense and panicy but great fun!
