I'm always wary about this kind of tie-in, often they seem hastily put together, but there has been something quite nice about the Resident Evil novels.
For those not in the know, Resident Evil is a tale of Scientific experimentation gone wrong. Mutated Viruses have begun to cause innocent victims to turn into mindless zombies, and the corporation behind this Virus, Umbrella, have also created a whole slew of nasties to support whatever hidden agenda they are operating.
This book documents the events of the first of the Resident Evil games, and in fairness does a pretty good job with what's on offer there. The plot of Resident Evil in many ways flows like a film, with extended 'action' sequences between the plot revelations. What this book does is takes that plot, divides it a bit more evenly between the main characters and the supporting characters (Although for the most part these characters never gain much more personality than the game gives them, principle exception to this rule being Albert Wesker, Leader of team of heroes).
The book achieves the dubious honour of reading much like the games play, with the characters progressing through investigation, solving puzzles and fighting to survive.
This isn't great intellectual stuff, but then it never sets out to be, but it captures the tone well and keeps your interest nicely as it moves along at a pleasantly peppy pace. The characterisation isn't too deep, but gives you some nice insights and allows you to feel something for them.
Fans of the game should like this, it's a pretty thorough adaptation, set within a familiar framework and shaken up a little bit. Others should approach it with a little trepidation though. If you're after a simple adventure, then this will probably do the trick. If you seek more, best give it a miss.

Review of Resident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy - S. D. Perry
Advantages: Fantastic read, very gripping Disadvantages: A little short
...in the series of the resident evil a week ago, and I have only just finished reading it. What a brilliant book and very well written. For those who have played the first game in the series, it ties in nicely and bulks out the plot of the game, but for those that havent, the book isnt totally unreadable. My attention for the book was grabbed when I saw the movie at the cinema, and was hooked straight away. I will certainly be reading the other books ... ...are as good. The plot revolves around a city in the USA, which suddenly experiences many murders. Reports come in that the victims are being found eaten. Who knows whether the attacker is human or animal? A huge mansion in the middle of the forest in the city, is earmarked as suspicious. A special tactics team is sent into investigate. Behind the doors of the mansion, is something that the team couldnt even have imagined and is beyond their wildest ...

Advantages: Fantastic Disadvantages: The game should be more like it
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy is a chilling novelisation of the Resident Evil game. The main story is exactly like the game; the only real difference is that they have more ammunition in the book. What I liked most about the book is the way Perry took on the story as if it was her own. It was not just a book of game, it was a story. And having played the game and read the book, the book is far more terrifying. Perhaps the only disappointing ...
