At some time or other I have had the misfortune to experience bad breath/halitosis in one form or another.
I think the worst case I can ever remember was that of my Biology teacher. Ha that’s a joke, with the rank fetid breath he expelled in huge stinky wafts he wouldn’t have stood a chance of getting biological with a rabid donkey let alone a member of the opposite sex! His obnoxious fetid breath was so foul that before he opened his mouth I used to take a huge lungful of air which I would exhale slowly whilst he spoke in order to avoid having to smell his obnoxious fumes which were an unpleasant mixture of stale tobacco, strong coffee and less than hygienic dental practice. I would often turn blue around the gills as I attempted the longest breath hold in history only to fail miserably as his lengthy monologues droned on eternally and then I would turn very green indeed, as I had to inhale his sour breath.
Of course most of us have questioned our own breath freshness haven’t we? How many times have you breathed into your own-cupped hand and then sniffed deeply to see if you are the owner of orally challenged breath just before entering into a session of up close and personal with that someone special.
Well do not despair… I have found the answer to this unpleasant problem in the form of Retardex Oral Rinse mouthwash.
Supplied in a 500 ml bottle this mouthwash is quite expensive at around £7.95. However, my friend is a dental nurse and she highly recommended this product. Too be honest I would have tried anything, including boiled monkey vomit if it helped with the stinky business of hubby’s pongy breath.
At some point we have all suffered from less than sweet breath and the usual cause of breath odour originates from within the mouth. The commonest reason for this is due to molecules known as volatile sulphur compounds (VCR’s), which are continually being created by the natural breakdown of human cells and bacteria.
Retardex promises to:
Kill bacteria that causes gum problems and tooth decay
Eliminate bad breath compounds (VSCs)
Helps to remove staining of teeth
Fights plaque
Retardex is recommended by ‘Fresh Breath’ clinics, is backed by international research and is leading dental school tested.
The magic ingredient of Retardex is known as CloSYS II, which is revolutionary in that it actually eliminates not masks bad breath causing volatile sulphur compounds on contacts, and continues to work throughout the day. CloSYS is also an effective anti bacterial formulation and an effective plaque-fighting weapon against gum disease and tooth decay. The product is safe and effective for everyday use. An added advantage of CloSyS II is that it gradually and gently whitens teeth stained by food and drink.
Retardex is actually an unflavoured clear mouthwash which is great if you hate that antiseptic taste or strong mint tingle in your mouth. However if you do like that zingy sensation of fresh mint you can pour the contents of the flavour vial (which comes supplied with the product) into the bottle, tighten up the lid shake and hey presto….you have a minty wash.
The active ingredients in Retardex are:
Active ingredient: CloSYS II, brand of stabilised Chlorine Dioxide. Ingredients: Aqua, Trisodium Phosphate, Chlorine Dioxide. Flavour Vial Ingredients: Mentha Piperita.
This product is Fluoride Free and contains no sugar or artificial sweetners.
So on to the breath test…and it is SOME test…let me explain further. My wonderful husband loves to partake in a nice spicy Vindaloo and a John Smith’s or several on a Saturday night. It may come as no surprise then to learn that on a Sunday morning his breath is akin to that of someone who expired several years ago due to an overdose of Garlic, peppers and John Smiths. I swear to you that if his breath, on a Sunday morning, could be bottled it would be an effective and lethal weapon if used in Chemical warfare. Believe me if you were to walk into our bedroom on any Sunday morning you would never make it out alive…well maybe that’s a slight exaggeration…but you would feel seriously ill. Stink bombs are nothing in comparison to the stench that pervades this room.
It is therefore somewhat understandable then that I masterminded a plan of action. I laid in wait last Sunday morning with handkerchief clasped firmly over my nose and mouth until hubby emerged from his beer induced slumber. I struck with the speed of a viper and pounced on him as he opened his mouth to yawn
“Arghhhh…what the hell?” he yelped in surprise as I hastily poured a capful of the mouthwash inside his gaping cavernous mouth.
“Gargle, gargle!” I mumbled loudly through the handkerchief, which was still clamped, tightly over my nose and I rapidly shot out of the room and headed to the sanctuary of the shower. After cleaning my teeth I decided that I would have a little try of Retardex too so I gargled with a capful of the liquid.
I had already premixed the *flavour vial* as I prefer a minty taste. The taste was not unpleasant; in fact it reminded me of Trebor mints with just a slight hint of antiseptic which was rather refreshing and not overpowering or sharp. There was no unpleasant tingling or stinging – it just made my mouth feel fresh and zingy.
So onto the test again, several large glasses of Alka Seltzer later and hubby is starting to look vaguely human again, his eyes have lost that hound dog very, very bloodshot look and his voice has returned to its normal pitch and his growling bear with a sore head impression had all but abated.
Brave fool that I am I uttered those dreaded words, “Breathe on me.”
Hubby’s eyes took on a familiar glint; “Say again?” he licked his lips, whether in fear or anticipation I will leave you to decide…but I KNOW THAT GLINT!
“Breathe on me, I want to see if the breath freshener has worked.”
“Oh cheers, what are you trying to say?”
“I want to see if the mouthwash has cleaned up you sewer breath okay?”
“Charming,” he grumbled but duly obliged and blew viciously into my face.
I steadied myself against the kitchen table as my nasal passages were assaulted with…a quite pleasant minty breath actually. I will admit though that to my discerning nose I could still detect just the very faintest pong of garlic and John Smiths but only just.
I came back for another sniff two hours later…I’m sure that glint in his eye was getting stronger….and I couldn’t detect any unfavourable odours.
Anyway for marks out of ten I would give Retardex nine and a half as it did a remarkably good job of eliminating the pong of garlic; it lost half a mark though because the effects were not that long lasting and hubby had to ‘top up’ his fresh breath by having another gargle later in the day.
At £7.95 I considered this to be a reasonable buy but hubby reckoned it would have been cheaper and more effective to buy a tube of Trebor mints. However I was quick to point out those mints contained Sugar whereas this mouthwash didn’t so it was more beneficial to his teeth. I promptly put the bill for the mouthwash in his pocket (well if he can afford 10 pints of John Smiths and a Vindaloo he can foot the bill for the mouthwash too) in his trouser pocket, grinned and told him if he wanted kisses then he had to keep on gargling.

In the meantime my husband, Steve, had been battling with bad breath. I had always been very sensitive in dealing with him on this issue, but in end gave an ultimatum that it was either the bad breath or me that needed to go. Steve spent a fortune having his teeth done, thinking that this could be the cause of the problem, and in changing his diet ... ...In short then:

Advantages: IT WORKS!!, Good range of diferent products Disadvantages: Not the Mintyest ever. Shame about the name
I have found Retardex Oral rinse to be an ideal rinse for everyday use and it has has an effective antibacterial formula to fight plaque, which research shows is a cause of gum problems and tooth decay.
Pretty much all of the RearDex products i have used contain CloSYS which is clinically proven to break down VSC's (Volatile Sulphur Compounds) that cause bad breath.
The thing which makes this range the best for me rather than Listerine or Oral ... ...the best place to buy Retardex from....... and its not Boots. You can find the full range online from an extreamly good shop called www.blushingbuyer.co.uk.
At that site you can get the full range at a good price. I have used them in the past and can vouch for their reliability.
I think Retardex works, and so do the dentists. Its not a pretty comercial product but it does the job.
Happy shopping ...
