Dogs can travel for up to 6 hours in very cramped cages where they can't stand or turn around. I have seen this first hand at a greyhoundrace which was what originally prompted me to read up more about the subject.
When their racing career is up many of the retired dogs get repaid by being `disposed of'. This can be either being put to sleep, taken to a knackers yard. Some are sold for medical research as their heart size and pulse is similar to that of a humans. Some make it to a rescue centre for retiredgreyhounds but many don't and they are not always put down humanely. Many just disappear.

I've owned my greyhound dog, Max, for years now. Like most greyhound rescue dogs he was a racinggreyhound - there are thousands of retired racers in rehoming centres and not many homes to go around. Sadly I know many are put straight on to the "7 day list" and then killed by kennels that do that, because they will never rehome them all. But dont go out and start rescuing them until you know what you are getting.
DISCLAIMER: all dogs are different. the following applies to many, but not all, greyhounds, and will absolutely not apply to greyhound crosses, who are completely different!
So dont be put off by one thing - just ask for a less usual greyhound!
Greyhounds make FABULOUS pets - if you suit them. They are NOT watchdogs, they will NOT play games and chase balls for hours (or sometimes at all!), they will NOT go on an all day ...

He?s a retired athlete. He?s tall, handsome, lithe, healthy, and elegant. He?s quiet, sensitive, gentle, loyal and affectionate. He?s easy-going and Irish. In fact, he has every quality that any woman could wish for in a male soul-mate. (Apart from the fact that he?s been castrated, has bad breath, and is prone to fleas.)
Yep ? he?s Bob the Greyhound.
Generally I?m not a fan of pedigree dog breeds ? there?s something grotesquely mercenary about producing dogs for high cash returns - while thousands of perfectly acceptable pooches are destroyed annually, simply because their appearance doesn?t quite meet with the approval of image-obsessed pet owners. However, owning an ex-racinggreyhound is an exception to mr-zeeman's ?there'll-be-no-designer-dogs-in-my-house? rule.
Why?
Because the thousands of greyhounds ...
