I have just been reading through some of my earlier ops and I really cannot believe how awful some of them are!! I am in the process of updating and editting the worst! This one being one of the first.

There have been a number of times in the past where me and hubby have had concerns that I may have been (or hoping) to be pregnant. I am not one of these people that can wait for a result from the doctor, I HAVE to know straight away. I have found that there are a lot of different tests available on the market these days and many of them are very expensive.

This test is very simple to use, very accurate (in fact it is virtually the same sort of test they use in hospitals and clinics) and best of all it is not all that expensive. For a box containing 1 test they are priced at £2.99 in my local chemist and for a box with 2 tests they are £5.99. This is a pretty universal figure and the price does not alter much form chemist to chemist. I have not seen them for sale in any supermarkets so I think they must be over the counter only.

Here is a little background information about pregnancy tests work, just in case you were wondering! Basically a pregnancy test works by detecting the amount of HCG in the womans urine. HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone made by the pregnancy that can be detected in the mother's blood or urine even before the woman's missed period.

HCG is first detectable in the blood as early as 7-8 days after ovulation by very sensitive HCG tests but normal blood tests can detect a HCG level after 10-11 days. A pregnancy test done by testing the urine can usually detect HCG after 14-16 days, earlier if a very sensitive test is used.

Clever stuff eh?!

As I have said, I have used these tests a number of times in the past and I have only had one false result so far, but that was only because I tested too early. I have had a positive result as early as 5 days before my period was due which I thought was great.

This is one of the most basic tests available on the market. There are many different types including digital and ones with pretty windows and wands! This test is neither of these. To put it bluntly, the test itself is just a thin stick. At one end there is some blue plastic, this is where you hold it and at the other end there is some absorbant material. This is where you "dip" it.

To take this test you can do it in 2 ways. The first is to urinate onto the stick midstream, the second is to use the pot provided, collect a sample and then dip the stick into it. The second method is the one suggested but either will give the result just as well. After the stick has been exposed to the urine sample, you have to wait for around 30 seconds to 4 minutes for your result. If one line appears then the result is negative, if there are 2 lines then it is a positive result. If you are unsure as to the result of your test or if you think you really are pregnant and get a negative result, wait a few days and then retest. If you are still unsure of your result, seek advice from your local Gp or family planning clinic who will be able to help you.

I am not planning to have anymore children (thank god!) but if I were, then these tests would be my first choice. They are not 100% reliable but then again there aren't many, if any, that are. I would not hesitate at all in recommending this test to anyone, well worth the money if you want a speedy reliable result.

Gosh - I can remember when I was pregnant I simply had to pop along to the pharmacy with a sample and the result was provided, an hour later, free of charge - thankfully also not planning any more children. Sue
