97.4 - Preston

97.4 Rock FM is my City, Preston Lancashire's local radio station. (I mean that as in it's aired from Preston, but is available all over the North West of England). It's one of the main stations I listen to. I'm always switching from this to BBC's Radio 1 to Smooth FM! I don't know why it's called Rock FM, because it isn't a total Rock station. It plays R'n'B, Pop, Hip-Hop, Rap, Dance etc, all the music that's in now, plus some classic tunes on ...

Hello! Well I have been off this site for a while now but I decided to get back into it. This review is about the station rockfm and is now owned by a group called bauer who own a lot and can pile a lot of money into the station. 97.4 Rock FM is part of the EMAP radio group (the guys who make Heat, Smash Hits, The Box, The Hits etc), and broadcasts to Preston, Blackpool, Wigan, Warrington... practically all across Lancashire. The station is based in Preston, in a converted church in St. Pauls Square on the outskirts of the city centre. I am proud to say, I am a regular Rock FM listener. From going on a tour of the station at the age of 10, I listened regularly for most of the 90s. For a while last year I deserted to Radio Wave, but soon came to my senses. To put it succinctly, Rock FM rocks. OK, so a few of their most recent gimmicks haven't paid off. Living in Lancashire the main local radio station listened to is probably Rock FM, and from its name it would sound a good station for me to listen to with my taste in music (i.e. rock) however if I do tune in and listen, as I do at work (its not my decision what we listen to) I find that this station with the word rock in its title plays music as far from that genre as is physically possible. In the time I listen to the station on a weekly basis ...
...these are the most commercial, pop orientated rock songs currently available. The main focus of the radio station seems to me to be in the dance, R 'n' B and pop areas of music, none of which genres appear in the radio stations name... Rock FM is the number one radio station in the North west of England, with some great DJs and a brilliant mix of chart music with some classics. Living in the Lancashire area we have a selection of few radio stations but I can honestly say Rock FM beats them all. All the DJs come across as friendly, down to earth people ready for a laugh. The music is upto date with the pop world, they do have different show slots containing different music but if you fancy a bit of motown or that era you can switch to their sister station. News Reports You are updated hourly on all news reports Traffic ...
...they also have a phone in to assist other drivers of any traffic problems. They also have a charity event which is called help a local child, local businesses and local people have the opportunity to donate as little as a £1.00 to help a local child whom are suffering from abuse or neglect or have a disability. This radio station with its HQ in Preston claims to draw in the regions highest number of listeners and it is easy to see why. It does not however play solely rock music but its music revolves around what is in the national charts at a particular time. 97.4 Rock FM is the North West's number one radip station. It is broadcast from Preston, Lancashire, whisch is about 10 miles from where I live. I always listen to Rock FM, it is the only radio station I listen to, as it plays all the latest chart music, and has a "top 7 at 7" which is where the listeners can ring in and vote for which song they would like to hear, and the 7 most popular requests are played in the top 7 at 7PM. I have always thought that 97.4 Rock FM was a great station till their latest gimmick - putting 7 people into the "Rock FM House" with 2 webcams and soundbites on the radio. Sorry guys it doesn't work anywhere near as well as it does on the TV. If you go on the webcams they are only sitting around whenever you go in. Not very interesting. It also appears that what is being broadcast is very selective so that it leads the listener to the conclusion ...
...by the station and that voting is probably incidental. Stick to the music - it is what you are good at and stay away from "cheap" gimmicks like this -it somehow seems beneath you as it is such a rip off of the sensational Big Brother - there is nothing original in what you are doing. ...
