Advantages: Reliable board with a well thought out design Disadvantages: LED diagnostics not normally seen
The ABIT AI7 was introduced earlier this year as one of a raft of motherboards designed to cope with the newer socket 478 processors. ABit have a good reputation for innovation and since I was in the market for a new motherboard I was keen to check this one out for myself. It had a number of features I needed and it was on sale at an attractive price.
So let's have a look at the more important specifications. The AI7 is based on the Intel 82865PE ... ...You get the impression that ABit spent a bit of time on the design to accomplish a layout such as this and I for one appreciate the effort. The vast majority of the board is clear of clutter and air flow is almost unrestricted. Speaking of air flow - there is one fan supplied onboard - cooling the memory controller hub chip. Advantages: Cooling excellent, digital display for errors modern architecture Disadvantages: Set up is a pig. Out of date bios problems, format hard drive to install, no on board graphics
...mind that i purchased an ABIT A17 motherboard. While it does not take the latest and greatest 775 pin P4 chips, it does take the older and still as good 1MB cache ,478 pin chips.
It come with some real whizzy gadgets for keeping the technology cool.The Chipset is kept cool with a circular Heatsink. Looks amazing an the design means that the fan drives cool air down through the fins and out sideways through more fins! Great cooling and maximizing ... ...gives errors when setting it up. Handy for troubleshooting which we needed to do.
Set up was a pig. We could not get the PC to boot. The first problem lay with the out of date BIOS that the board is shipped with. Not good.
Secondly the board would not boot with an existing hard drive. We had to format a drive and reinstall windows to get it to work. Ive never heardof that before apart from on Dell machines. A real timekiller.

Advantages: Many Ram slots, 800mhz FSB supported Disadvantages: Fan on northbridge makes a lot of noise
