Athlon Xp 2800+ - Still very nice
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2800+ / 2.08 GHz processor by mattsouthern

Advantages: Quick, Never an error, Very affordable
Disadvantages: NONE!

...not come with the official AMD heatsink and fan but then I really didn't want that anyway. I always find these certified fans too noisy so I bought a Zalman CNPS6000-CU AMD cooler. If you have seen these then you will know they are not your typical heatsink and fan. They have a huge surface area and a large fan running at a very low RPM. This makes for efficient and quiet cooling. The CPU runs at around 55C and if you are playing games or a CPU demanding ...
...Since I have had this CPU for such a long time I would have expected to be playing games now where my system would struggle but this is not the case. I can still play the latest games such as Doom 3 and still have perfect game play. I think this makes it excellent value for money. I think I am only going to replace my current system when the new Athlon 64s come down in price and when performance is considerably more because even after 18 months I ... Read review

Perfect little performer, at a reasonable price
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2800+ / 2.08 GHz processor by Omertron

Advantages: Fast and cheap
Disadvantages: None

I've had this chip in my main computer now for over 6 months. What comes in the box? Well that all depends on what package you buy. These processor chips usually come in two flavours: Retail Boxed and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). The difference to you and I is that the OEM version only contains the processor (and protective packaging) and the Retail Boxed version comes with a heatsink, fan, silicon coolant, instructions etc. Basically, ...
...fitting a processor to your motherboard and have all the other components (usually when you are upgrading the CPU only) then you will just need the OEM version. One word of warning however, make sure that if you are upgrading, that your heatsink and fan will cope with the extra heat generated by the faster processor! Fitting the processor comes in two stages, really easy and scarily hard... I'll explain more :o) When you mount the chip on the motherboard, ... Read review

Good value chips
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2800+ / 2.08 GHz processor by poozle

Advantages: Very good value, supplied hsf is very quiet.
Disadvantages: Slow performance in some applications.

All of the AMD chips (except maybe the fx range) offer better value for money than their intel equivalents in all but the most CPU intensive compression programs (eg converting DVDs to divX). I have built two computers using this chip for people and have had nothing but good results from it, I built one high performance PC using it about 4 months ago and one medium range PC a couple of weeks ago. Both perform admirably in different aplications and ...
...this is due to intel having more optimisation sets (which, in turn, make an aplication run faster if it supports them) than the equivalent athlons, not down to the raw speed. The processor in the performace PC was overclocked by the motherboard on its own, giving the performance of the 3200 at no increased cost, and has been working perfect since. In comparrison the mid end PC is running almost as fast in all aplications except the heavily CPU intensive ... Read review

excellent value for money
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2800+ / 2.08 GHz processor by garfee2003

Advantages: Quick, Highly overclockable, great price, 333fsb
Disadvantages: hotter than p4's

...the same pace as an amd athlon 3200, the setting are, 400fsb(2*200) with a multiplier of 11 and the speed is 2200mhz. I have ddr 400 ram aslo so i get no bottlenecks in performance, the heatsink in the packet is very good for this cpu as it was changed recently to a new model, the cach for this cpu is 512mb of level 2 which give you freat performance this cpu is supposed to match the pentium 4 2.8 but i think its faster than that cpu by a long shot ...
...first time in the motherboard amd cpu's are doubled so you will only need to put in 166 in the bios to obtain the correct cpu speed, this cpu is supposed to be on level terms with the pentium 4 2.8GHZ personally i think its a little quicker although it runs slower, amd cpu's do more work per pipeline than pentiums alowwing them to go slower but keep performance, remember when buying computer equipment please check compatability before you purchase. ... The AMD Athlon XP processor is the latest member of the AMD Athlon family of processors designed to meet the computation-intensive requirements of cutting-edge software applications running on high-performance desktop systems. AMD delivers tremendous performance by increasing the amount of work done per clock cycle and improving the operating frequency at the same time. The end result is a processor design that produces a high volume of work done per cycle and high operating frequencies - an optimum combination for compelling application performance. The AMD Athlon XP processor offers fast results when working with digital media like audio, video, and image files. It provides for outstanding near real-time voice, video, and CAD/CAM as a result of features like larger cache memory, 3DNow! Professional technology, and the innovative QuantiSpeed architecture, which includes the industry's most powerful fully pipelined x86 floating point engine. The AMD Athlon XP processor brings digital entertainment like games and DVDs to life with rich, smooth graphics and true to life sound. The processor enables a more life-like audio experience with special surround sound enhancing features. The AMD Athlon XP processor takes advantage of connected digital devices and their content by delivering realistic photos, smooth videos, and rich sound. The combination of the Windows XP operating system's features and the exceptional capabilities of the AMD Athlon XP processor provide a phenomenal Internet experience with smoother streaming audio and video. The AMD Athlon XP processor offers compelling performance for running Microsoft Windows XP, as well as outstanding performance on previous versions of Windows. The raw power and robust features of the AMD Athlon XP processor enable users to make the most of multitasking and user switching capabilities offered in Windows XP. The AMD Athlon XP processor's innovative QuantiSpeed architecture helps propel Windows XP application performance to a new level. To unleash the rich features found in Windows XP, AMD and Microsoft worked together to optimize applications like Media Encoder 8.0 for AMD's 3DNow! Professional technology. QuantiSpeed architecture, the latest technological enhancement to the award-winning AMD Athlon processor core, provides for extra performance in the cutting-edge features users need most. At the heart of QuantiSpeed architecture is a nine-issue, superscalar, fully-pipelined core. This provides more pathways to feed application instructions into the execution engines of the core, simply allowing the processor to complete more work in a given clock cycle. Additional features of QuantiSpeed architecture include a superscalar, fully pipelined floating point engine, hardware data prefetch, and exclusive, speculative Translation Look-aside Buffers (TLBs). Combined, these features help boost overall productivity and allow a system to boot and load applications quickly. In the end, users will enjoy an effortless computing experience.
