I've been using AVG for about 2 years now and recommended it to quite a few friends whenever they ask about anti-virus software (or if I find out they aren't running any even!). It's stopped a couple of viruses from getting onto my computer and hasn't let one slip through yet (keep your virus definitions updated regularly though to be safe!). I used to do a full scan of my computer quite often but AVG has proved to be so reliable ... ...scan. The two components of AVG (avgcc32.exe and avgserv.exe) take up barely 2 mb of memory and barely any cpu time and runs as well on an old Windows 95 machine as it does on Windows XP. In the past I've used anti-virus software from Norton and PC-Cillin, but AVG has to be my favourite.

...he recommended I look up AVG as he said they have a free edition which is much more up to date than my old software was (I had a late 90s version of McAfee Virus Scan I think it was). So I went off to download.com and did a search for it. The reviews were very good, so I decided it must be worth a try and I'm certainly not disappointed so far.
The installation itself was pretty quick from what I remember, I didn't have to email the company (which, ... ...so later a window from AVG would pop up saying something like 'test scan completed' and I'd think why did it do that? I didn't set that up... but you can turn that option off, there are a couple of settings for disabling any automatic scanning, by going to 'Scheduler' within the 'Test Center'. AVG vs. the Big Names
Probably the biggest name in the Anti-Virus world is Norton Anti-Virus or possibly McAfee, you pay good money for them so must be the best, right? WRONG.
In my experience both of these programs run so many services on your PC it makes what was once your nice new shiny fast PC into a tortoise, and to top that I have found that both of these programs miss a fair number of viruses anyhow.
I have installed ... ...the owners horror, the moment AVG was installed, hey presto it finds a virus.
So AVG, why is so good then?
Firstly its FREE, and as it happens that's my favorite price.
Secondly AVG does not run a massive amount of services on your PC, and as such is doesn't slow down your computer as much as the "Big Names" do.
Thirdly it does seem to do a much better job at catching viruses than many of the other anti-virus programs do, im not saying that AVG ...

...once every 2 weeks, but AVG updates every day and you don't have to tell it. Again this has similar ups and downs to the scanning, it keeps your PC safe but will probably slow down some older computers.
The professional version comes with the Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam (An Email protection thing, where you tell the program what is Spam and it will delete it), Scheduler (lets you choose when and how often to scan), Resident Shield (Which ... ...I would say is that AVG also do a Rootkit software which isnt included with this package but can be downloaded free from their website. Rootkits are programs such as Keyloggers which can monitor what you type and send them to a third party, potentially giving away passwords and important information. The rootkit scan doesn't schedule automatically like the virus scans, possibly due to memory issues again.

Advantages: Free Disadvantages: Can be scary, when it tells you it's doing something and you don't get the option of what it does.
A week ago, we noticed that our computer had become infected with a virus, and after a lot of searching we realised it was the Loveletter-to-you virus, which caused havok last year. We searched our hardrive using the standard windows 98 CD scan, but it claimed there were no errors (even though all of our jpgs had been turned into vbs files and all of our mp3s had been copied). We decided that we had to bring in the real forces, and downloaded PC ... ...no use. Finally, a friend suggested I get the free virus checker from grisoft, which I did. And then my virus was gone :)

I have AVG on my computer and it works wonders. The best thing is, is that it is completely free and offers great protection. It’s easy to use and does the job perfectly and is always updated.

AVG is free, and has been for some time now, and there is no sign of this changing.
