Advantages: fresh, original storyline, a modern slant on an old myth, and of course, Merry Gentry Disadvantages: a bit confusing with all the different types of fey, but it becomes clearer
...general tone is written as a mix of fantasy and an alternate history. The point of deviation from normal history is when Thomas Jefferson gave the Unseelie and Seelie courts asylum after they were exiled from Europe. However, Jefferson said that they could not set themselves up to be worshipped as gods, or they risked being evicted from American soil.
Meredith NicEsus is a faerie. No, she isn't two inches tall, and no, she doesn't have wings. She ... ...and twisted Cel. But being a faerie princess isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Unfortunately for Merry, she not only has royal blood, but also lesser Fey AND human blood, which has left her mortal, which the sidhe don't take kindly to. Quick review of A Kiss of Shadows - Laurell K. Hamilton
It is the first in the merry gentry series, a very well paced book, the characters are believable and the narrative is strong and vivid, this is definitely a book to get lost in. something I'd recommend for people that can't get enough of the paranormal.
Merry Gentry is your Fairy princess in disguise, but if it just your average everyday fairytale i wouldn't bother reviewing. Merry the human world working for a detective agency, trying her best to stay out of notice of her sadistic aunt. If she stayed safe for the entire novel it wouldn't be much of a story, so in comes the sinfully handsome royal guards, allot of magic, add in suspense and murder, hey presto. A masterpiece!
Although, the series up to book are great, everything else goes downhill as Hamilton, begins to focus more on sex, rather tahn plot, but we can only hope it gets better. ...

So the Queen sets her son and her niece a task of seeing who can first get pregnant (but for the son he must get one of his female dobyguards pregnant), and whoever succeeds in their task, then they will become the next person to take over the throne. ...
