Advantages: A beautifully written tale with girlish dreams... Disadvantages: archaeic language
...you that this truly is a fairytale for all ages. It is a much loved story of mine, one that I have read many times over the years. I first read this at the age of six; I remember receiving the book for my birthday and thoroughly enjoying it. Now let me also add to that statement that although I read it at this age, many children may need assistance with the language and most of the book at such a young age. I was blessed with the ability to read and ...

Advantages: Suitable for all ages, moving story, charming people, happy ending Disadvantages: A major coincidence in the resolution of the story
...until recently, it wasn't considered a healthy climate for children. The book was first published in 1905, when most British children born in India were sent to schools in the UK from a young age, so although it sounds almost barbaric in today's society, it was accepted as the thing to do.
Sara's mother died when she was a baby, so her father has been everything to her. Although she's been given every material thing possible, and could have become ...

Advantages: moving story about girlish dreams and enduring hope and love Disadvantages: sensitive children may be upset by Sara's personal tragedy
This is a love story. Not a romance, but a real love story. It is the tale of a child much beloved by her widowed soldier father, her adoration of him, and the love she has for her true friends. It is the sort of love that does not need riches, nor glory, nor feasts, and that can sustain through adversity. And sustain it does in this tale of woe, sorrow, and ultimate happiness.
Little Sara Crewe is the daughter of a widowed English Army officer ...

Advantages: Inspiring, sweet, full of positive messages - a great comfort read Disadvantages: A tad dated - but you can hardly hold that against a classic
...of the sweetest, loveliest books a girl could read in childhood. It's been a long time but reading it again all these years down the line (aged 21), it still holds such charm, wonder and profound messages about class, poverty and happiness that I know it'll be returning to my shelf to read again and pass on to my own children.
It tells the story of Sara Crewe, a rich little girl brought up in India by her beloved father, who moves to England to ...

Advantages: A wonderfulread for girls of all ages Disadvantages: Strange internal time-scheme
...I have read this book. A charming story for young girls and a delicious, nostalgic 'comfort read' for much older girls, this is a classic which seems unlikely to fade.
One thing about this book intrigues me - some of the characters do not seem to age.
At the beginning of the story, Sara is seven years old and by the end she is eleven or twelve. We are introduced to Lottie (aged four) and Becky (aged fourteen) quite early in the story. By the ...

Advantages: Good for all ages, Inspiring Message Disadvantages: None, I love this book.
...faveourite books when I was a little girl and I have just re-read it at the age of 22 and I love it just as a much now as I did then.
Sara Crewe is a very rich little girl from India who is sent to an exclusive boarding school in London where she is treated as the show pupil. She is given fine clothes and an ornate bedroom with a real tiger skin rug. She even has a maid to herself. All this attention would make most little girls unbearable but ...

Advantages: Beautifully told, magical and realistic. Disadvantages: None that I found.
A Little Princess is one of my all - time favourites. It is beautifully told and it is amazing how the main character, Sara Crewe, shows that every little girl is a princess on the inside, no matter how pretty or clever she is. She proves this when she treats the servant - girl as though she were any other girl, which she really was. Sara remains a princess even when something terrible happens that causes her to go from riches to rags. Luckily all ...

...with stories & cheers up a fellow pupil who is missing their parent, despite her own feelings.
Even on her own birthday she appears to not be missing her Father, at least not that you can tell.
Despite the sad news later that she appears parentless & poor it does not seem to phase her, she gets cold, hungry & I suspect very lonely at times but you would not think so from the way the book is written, that this unduly worries her.
I find myself often ...

Advantages: great for the girls Disadvantages: boys might not like it
Every girl is a princess. That's the principle of the entire book. I bsolutely loved it at the age of 10 and now, at the age of 19, I've read this sweet story about 16 times already. I don't want to tell you what happens. I won't tell you anything that happens just because you should read it and let the magic work for you. It is irresistable and you will not be able to put the book down. Have a go at it if you are a guy. But if you are female, this ...
