Advantages Advantages Amusing story, beautifully illustrated and full of learning potential.

Disadvantages Disadvantages None to speak of.

FAMILIAR COMFORTS In the well-populated market of children’s books, perhaps one of the most instantly recognisable styles of illustration belongs to Axel Scheffler, who, in conjunction with Julia Donaldson penned the magnificent “The Gruffalo”, now considered by many to be a modern classic. German-born Scheffler has illustrated books for several other writers, but none of his work has been quite as popular as his many collaborations with Donaldson. The pair have produced a number of books which continue to grace the shelves of children’s reading libraries, not just in the UK, but around the ... more

A squash and a squeeze We bought this the other day because we both enjoy Julia Donaldson books, and this did not disappoint; I always worry that having thoroughly enjoyed some books by a specific author, then if a new book isn't as good, I will be disappointed. This did not disappoint us in any way. As with most Julia Donaldson books, the story is totally in rhyme, which makes it easy for children to join in and because they can do this, they grow in confidence and their enjoyment of stories increases. **THE STORY** The story starts with a lady who complains to the wise man that her house is ... more

    Advantages Advantages Full of fun.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None at all.

I wonder just how many of us think that we live in a house that is far too small for us? Well Julia Donaldson has written this little tale that teaches us to be very grateful for the space that we have. `A squash and a Squeeze` is a comical little tale that keeps you guessing right until the end. In this story there are only two main characters, one is a little old lady who lives all by herself and the other is a Wise Old Man. Granny looks quite outdated compared to many Grannies that I know today, she has grey hair that is tied back into a bun and she wears a roomy pinny. The Wise Old Man has ... more

We received our copy of ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ as a birthday present for one of my little ones and it has been read over and over again. The story is written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. This pair are also responsible for several over wonderful books, such as ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Room On The Broom’. ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ was their first collaboration. ‘A Squash And A Squeeze’ is the story of a little old lady who is fed up of having so little space in her house. She calls upon a wise old man to help her and he comes up with a very curious plan, involving a group of ... more

Advantages Advantages a colourful, funny, engaging story book!

Disadvantages Disadvantages the amount of times I have to read it to my children!

In my opinion, Julia Donaldson is THE young childrens author of the moment. She has written over 120 pieces and has this week been appointed as the Childrens Laurate, a title she richly deserves! A squash and a squeeze is a funny tale told in the usual rhythming style of Donaldson, about an old lady who lives in a little house. She feels she has no room so asks an wise old man for help. After a few animal mishaps, she realises that her house is not as small as she thought! It is excellently told, the illustrations are clear, colourful and cheeky in places, and it has an underlying meaning ... more

Advantages Advantages easy to read, colourful, fun

Disadvantages Disadvantages quite short, perhaps a little repetitive

My daughter, and now by extension my wife and I, has been a fan of Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler's books ever since she discovered the Gruffalo; the consistent style of easy to read, simple (but fun) stories, together with the quirky and distinctive artwork that stretch across all their books make them very accessible to even the very young; in fact, especially the very young (and young at heart!) A Bit of Background... A Squash and a Squeeze was Julia Donaldson's first ever book, which span out of her previous career as a writer of catchy, simple songs for childrens tv. It actually began ... more

A squash and a squeeze This is a children's book written by Julia Donaldson, author of 'The Gruffalo' and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. It is a 24 page book published by Macmillan at a cost of £5.99. It is her first book published in 1993 which started off as a song for a children's television show. Julia writes in what was to become her usual style of rhyme to produce this wonderful text. A woman is complaining that her house is "a squash and a squeeze" and asks an old man his advice. He advises to take in animal after animal until there is just no more room and the old woman is beside ... more

5 Stars Quick review of A Squash and a Squeeze - Julia Donaldson by terri56 17/06/2007
As a reader I love this book. The lilt adapted in reading this book can make it funny or tragic. It teaches about 'greed' and shows how happy the little old woman was with 'just' her house. It can be read to a wide age group, the pictures are appealing, and soon the older child is wanting to read it to the younger. Oh joy! The text is memorable and easily memorised by older children-making a car journey pleasant as we remember the text.. Highly recommended
