Abbey Happy!!

Advantages: Simple, friendly and helpful
Disadvantages: They keep moving the mortgage centre!!

I have been an abbey banking customer for a many moon now! ... A very happy abbey customer, I hasten to add!!! The first time I plucked up the courage to take that giant step onto the property ladder, I was young, naive and a little bit wet behind the ears!! My mortage advisor (from the estate agent) sorted all the technical stuff for me, at the time, the best mortgage around was with the Abbey. As most mortgage advisors tend to, he clevely got ...
...that advisor for is my abbey mortgage. Pretty soon after I took this mortgage out, I lost my job, leaving me in a financial difficulty, Abbey National were superb, I never once got threatining letters from them or anything, I talked to them, and they wanted to help me keep my house and much as I wanted to keep it! Since having my mortgage with them, I have taken out two home improvement loans, on both occasions, I went into the branch to see the ...

I got no problems with the abbey.

Advantages: Easy to organise. Good package options
Disadvantages: Little contact with them.

...many people complain about the Abbey National as a lender for Mortgages. Well, I will stand in their corner and defend them to the hills. Basically, because they helped me out with a great deal and are not full of extras. When I first took my unsteady steps into the world of mortgages, I realised that it was a minefield that I was about to enter. After experiencing 2.5 years of an "Interest Only" mortgage, I vowed I would not fall into the same ...
...me, I opted for the Abbey National. Why? Well, look at my situation. I was Selling my flat in February. Buying a new house at the same time and getting married in the June. This meant 2 of the most stressful things in the world were happening at once, not to mention most expensive. I therefore was going to have very little money available to me for the next couple of years. What I needed was a low interest rate, so the mortgage would not increase ...

Abbey National Makes Life More Difficult

Advantages: Well Known Company
Disadvantages: Bad Service and Incompetance

...applied for a mortgage through Abbey National to purchase my current property. At the time the deals on offer were widespread and there was so much choice on the market. I opted for a discounted Capital & Repayment mortgage which means that my mortgage is discounted against the Bank of England base rate for interest. Having had a bad experience with Endowment mortgages I wanted a simple straightforward Capital and Repayment which means that the ...
...to my financial adviser and Abbey National are so called experts I thought all was fine! By chance I decided to read through the mortgage offer back to front to ensure that I knew what I was letting myself in for. Good job I did. I noticed that the repayment figures quoted in the offer were a less than my previous mortgage. Now taking into consideration that I had borrowed a lot more money and the interest rate was not that different I could not ...

April Mortgage Madness Was Worse Than Admitted

Advantages: Flexible Mortgage Product
Disadvantages: When Things Go Wrong They Go BADLY Wrong!

Although the Abbey claim that mortgage problems in April were due to payments being taken twice, I can exclusively reveal the truth of what occurred. I was one of those affected by the 'Mortgage Madness' which struck several thousand Abbey National Mortgage accounts recently, mainly accounts beginning '915'. The problems actually started way back in March. To give you some idea, my mortgage payment is made by Direct Debit on 23rd of each month. In ...
...read in the Press that Abbey National had ‘inadvertently’ charged some customers their April mortgage payments twice. After all, I was not due to pay them anything further until 23rd April. I was therefore shocked to discover that despite having had the usual mortgage payment deducted from my account on 30th March, the Abbey proceeded to make FOUR further debits to my account, two on 2nd April and two more on 4th April. Two of the payments ...

WANT TO GO FLEXIBLE WITHOUT THE COST

Advantages: See op
Disadvantages: See op

BACKGROUND. ----------- Abbey national is a High street bank converted from a building society. They provide similar products to all other major banks but are'nt as competitive. The only product that seems to be competitive is their mortgage for which they have been awarded twice by Your mortgage magazine. In 1998 Abbey National launched their Internet bank "Cahoot" now hugely successful initially provided credit cards although now they also ...
...------------- My own experience with Abbey National has been relation to having held their mortgage account for four years. Although not a flexible mortgage (for which I would have to pay additional charges), The mortgage is a repayment mortgage capped at 6.55% meaning if the SVR (standard Variable Rate) for Abbey national reduces below 6.55% so will my mortgage interest rate, but if the rates were to rise there will be no change to my payments ...

Pretty good, could be better

Advantages: Fairly hassle-free, will accept applications from non-UK-residents

...been generally satisfied with my Abbey Nat mortgage. That is, nothing has happened that would make me want to give them a really negative review. Then again, they're not so great that I could give them an overly positive one either. I took out an Abbey National mortgage by necessity really - at the time (autumn 2000) I was in the process of applying for permanent residency in the UK (I am Canadian, my spouse is British), but because I didn't have ...

Abbey did a survey of the property we wanted to buy, and after a few weeks we got our mortgage offer; everything seemed to go very smoothly (although of course this was just our experience, maybe it doesn't happen for everyone). We had a nice 6-month period of a discounted interest rate, so our payments were a bit lower than normal, which was a great help since we needed to buy furniture, fix the place up etc. They have ...

...have had a mortgage with Abbey for over two years now. I got a buy to let tracker deal with £250 cash back. Beware mortgage indemnity

...of mine applied for an Abbey National mortgage, and had a deposit of at least 20% of the purchase price. All was approved, and my friend paid Abbey National the appropriate fee. Later, however, the Abbey National sent someone to value the property. It was valued significantly lower than the purchase price, the asking price and another independent valuation. Because of this, Abbey National decided to charge a mortgage indemnity premium because of ...

You may have been paying too much.

Advantages: Easy to apply for
Disadvantages: May have been overcharging by upto £27 a month

...some of the major lenders, Abbey National included, have been keeping some mortgage interest rates too high. This mainly affects people with discounted or capped mortgages as several mortgage providers have introduced two Standard Variable Rates. For example you may be paying 6.75% whereas other borrowers may only be paying 6.00%. This could be costing you up to £27 a month in overpayments. If you have one of these mortgages, as I do, you could ...

Abbey - making life harder

Advantages: Competitive Rates
Disadvantages: Customer Service

Having been with Abbey for the last 25 years, I feel the need to voice my concerns over their integrity as a major high street bank. 2 years ago I took a 2 year fixed term mortgage rate, at the time they were offering the most competitive rates on the high street and their mortgage advisors worked effortlessly to push through my application. Sadly this was my last 'good' experience with the bank. Soon after the mortgage term of 2 years (actually ...
...competitive rate... this is where Abbey really let me down. Needing the latest statement, I patiently waited for September's paperwork. As time went on, still not statement, weeks passed and still no statement. During this time I contacted Tel banking who were more than unhelpful. Time and time again I was informed there was a printer 'error' and they will get these out to me at some point. 5 calls later and they still couldn't advise when these ...

Mortgages and Remortgages with Abbey National

Advantages: Cheap rates easy to get hold of and easy to talk to
Disadvantages: upto now none - touch wood!

...I don' t work for Abbey Nat nor will I get any renumeration from this review. Who is this review aimed at? Anyone looking for a morgage. Or anyone wanting to save money on an existing mortgage by switching to the Abbey My Story. 5 years ago - I switched mortgages to the Abbey as they were the lowest rates around. Purely professional

Advantages: easy to get appointments, quick & professional service, low valuation fee, fixed interest rates
Disadvantages: duplicating data they already had

Having banked with Abbey National, now Abbey (owned by Spanish bank Santander) since being 7 years old it was only natural that they were my first port of call when it came to securing a mortgage on my first home. The basic requirement was a fixed term of either 2 or 5 years, a competitive interest rate and low valuation fees. Getting an appointment was simple enough, and I had a decision on my borrowing amount within 30 minutes of the adviser making ...
...is worth noting readers that Abbey do not offer 100% mortgages and if you opt for a 95% mortgage they have the discretion to add a higher lending charge which in some cases can add thousands to the mortgage over the term of the loan. The valuation process was speedy and approved and I received a formal offer letter and solicitors were instructed. Everything sorted. In the end I got a 2 years fixed rate deal on 5.49% July 2009 on a strict interest ...

Life in pieces, thanks to Abbey

Advantages: They are a bank ?
Disadvantages: unreliable, uncaring staff, broken promises, incompetent

...The mortgage advisor at the Abbey was only available once a week, so the Ex made an appointment to see him. 1st app 2 weeks later. He went in and was given a form to fill in and come back 2 weeks later. Ummm, they couldn't have sent that form to him before, or given it to him, when he made the appointment ? Ok, not to worry, he filled in the form and made another appointment with his accountant to get 3 years accounts (he is self-employed). He turned ...
...the form and 3 years accounts with him. The MA took the form, checked the accounts and said fine, all is well, and he will get the ball rolling. He asked us both to get solicitors (they wouldn't accept us using the same one), and asked us to get in touch with the Housing Association (the house is a shared-ownership home). We talked to the HA, which sent us back to the bank, who told us to speak to the solicitor, which in turn sent us back to the ...

Quick review of Abbey Mortgages

Abbey National were just terrible in so far as arranging my recent mortgage, to the point whereby the entire sale and purchase nearly collapsed as a result. SImply put, the Abbey National takes the definition of the word incompetence to new levels with astounding levels of bureaucracy and an inability to talk to someone capable of making a decision that isn't on a flowchart. I understand that customer service has declined rapidly for the Abbey following it's takeover from the Santander Group and can readily agree with that view having had first hand experience. As soon as my mortgage fixed term expires, I will be off to another lender! Take my advice - avoid the Abbey like the plague!!! ...

Shabby Abbey mortgage....

Advantages: quite low mortgage rates, easier acceptance conditions
Disadvantages: internal bussiness vertigo

I am having an Abbey mortgage for almost 3 years and had nothing to complain until remortgaging with them. So far it was just a quiet withdrawn every month from my account, until recently, when the initial preferential rate (a very good one for the market) expired. Deciding to remortgage with them, I told them to send me the paperwork for a new deal at home for having a look at the terms with no obligation. The paperwork contained on the same page ...
...that no signature is required; also a small printed reference to a period of 14 days after which the deal is automatically on! Even though, after agreeing a new deal I had the nasty surprise to see a higher amount withdrawn in the following month from my account and when calling the customer service they realised that my deal was inexistent! They fixed this afterwards but.... that was appalling. ...
