    Firstly I should point out that Abbey have now changed their name to Santander, and they have now merged with Alliance and Leicester. I joined Santander in 2008 just as I was about to join uni, I already had an account with HSBC but thought that being a student it would be useful to have two accounts to help juggle money. I applied for my account online and pointed out that I wanted a normal current account (students are only allowed one student account and I already had one with HSBC).     When I received a quote for my car insurance in December I decided to shop around before accepting. I had received through the post a letter from Abbey National about the motor insurance they did,so I went onto their website for an instant quote to find they were quite substantially cheaper than my present insurance company. I phoned them up just to double check with them as I couldn't beleive the difference to what I was paying,and they told me it was exactly right.     Abbey are a fantastic bank that offer a lot of products under one roof. Abbey offer a wide range of bank accounts, they have a current account which i have with them where i have a visa debit card, a cheque book and an overdraft on the account of £1000 although i have never used the overdraft and havent used a cheque for ages, you can pay in most stores through chip and pin with your debit card and use it all over the world at cash machines so this for me is a great account.     I would strongly advise against any involvement with Abbey National's recently launched car insurance division. Having taken out policies for two cars, both fully comprehensive, I was shocked at how incompetent, the operation is. Abbey National car insurance is a self-contained unit run from offices in Liverpool. Essentially it launched too quick, before its adminstration was anywhere near able to cope with the demand. Actual cover cost is very competitive, with the usual facilities offered to new customers, i.e windscreen cover, protected no claims, legal protection etc etc. Unfortunately ... more

    I have had my Abbey National car Insurance policy since June 2000. Having worked in Car Insurance for 15 years prior to having children I do know a fair bit about this subject and have had no problems whatsoever. The policy documents were issue quickly and accurately, the premium is the cheapest I could find anywhere and the cover is extensive. I had to make a claim recently when someone (who chose to remain anonymous)hit my car whilst it was parked in a public car park.     After reading the first opinion on Abbey National car insurance I was a little shocked. I have to admist I haven't had to make a claim so far. From my fisrt initial call and through to now I haven't had any problems. The people I spoke to were honest and answered all my questions and queries I had. I had the documents within a couple of days and everything has been fine. They were extremly competitive and gave me the best quote. Whenever I have had to ring them, they have been quick to answer the phone and have resolved any of my queries. I can't put a bad word passed them. ... more

    We just bought a new car and had to find insurance pretty quickly to cover the car that we could go and pick it up. So after spending hours on the Internet looking here ,there and everywere to get diffrent quotes, and quiet honestly me beeing totaly stressed out by now and getting to the Point of telling my Husband he could go and jump and sort out his own car insurance. I thought that I had a brilliant Idea, whatbetter to insure your car with your Bank , this must be the easyest way,all under one Roof easy paying, transfer your Deposit and get a cover note straight away.     Advantages Advantages Interest free monthly payment scheme,easy paperwork to understand

    Disadvantages Disadvantages higher premiums, crafty bastards

    Although Abbey Nationals insurance premiums are marginally higher than other companies, the interest free monthly payment scheme is perfect for people who can't afford to pay the premium in full. This keeps my yearly premium down. I haven't had to make a claim yet so I can't comment on the full range of customer service but they were extremely helpful albeit a little slow when I wanted to change cars on my insurance policy. The paperwork is well documented and easy to understand so I haven't had any problems whatsover so far. One thing that surprised me was that they didn't ask for proof of my ... more

    Advantages Advantages Efficient, efficient ,EFFICIENT

    Disadvantages Disadvantages not enough counter staff on a Saturday - but only sometimes

    OK I don't have facts and figures, but I do know what i like and I think that Abbey is a brilliant bank. I have recommended them to family and friends and not one person has said that they regret opening an account with Abbey. The branches are efficient and clean and open until mid-afternoon on a Saturday and the staff are great. Nothing is too much trouble, if you telephone them they answer promptly and try to solve your query as best they can. A lot of the decisions they make with your account arer made by studying how well you have run your account with them over a period of time. if you ... more

    I took out a policy with abbey national last year (I've since changed). As i remember the policy cost me £1200 for a Fiat punto with a value of £4000, this was including my Pass-Plus certificate, which for an 18 year-old lad was not a bad price compared to many other insurance companys. 'It was when I came to use the insurance company for reason for which i was paying so much money that the problems began!'. About a month away from my renewal my car was broken into.
