If you're yet to convert from any of the other Windows OS' to Windows 7 then getting an Acer Aspire 5332 is a nice place to start. Windows 7 runs very well on it, even though it hasn't got the top processor with it's 1.9GHz Intel Celeron, it does a good job of keeping pace with the ever increasing demands on my time as a father of a 4 month year old. I got brought the Acer Aspire two years ago as a birthday present and it has been a faithful friend ever since. Not once has it broken, internally or externally, and thats saying a lot considering the amount of times i've dropped it or knocked it off my desk.
