Advantages Advantages Nicely designed DAB receiver

Disadvantages Disadvantages Still a bit pricey for the casual user

My Dad has been after a DAB radio for a while now. He's in his sixties but has always been interested in radio and has recently become interested in the internet and Freeview too. I had never really been interested in DAB until I saw the Pure Evoke 1 radio reduced to £66 and then £40 at the beginning of 2004 - and missed both offers! But this kicked off my interested and I decided I wanted to give DAB a try. --> WHAT IS DAB? DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. Like Freeview and digital satellite, signals are encoded (captured) and digitally transmitted. There are three ways to receive ... more

Advantages Advantages Good price, great reception, fab & groovy(!) styling.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Case & handle feel fragile, speakers too bassy.

This DAB radio by Acoustic Solutions is the mid-priced model in a range of 3 similar ones. Stylistically, it looks very impressive, as the design seems (to my eyes) to be a combination of modern 21st century styling, 60's retro and vintage ham radio. The colours are all variants of brown: very very pale beige for the case and buttons/knobs, a pale brown for the handle and base with the control fascia being a sort of a muddy browny-gray. It sounds like a dog's dinner, but stylistically, it is very pleasing and reminds me very much of some of the more modern pieces of medical equipment I ... more

Advantages Advantages Great reception, clear, design, autotuning, size.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Uses up battery fast.

~ PRICE ~ I purchased mine from Argos at around £47.99 which was a while ago, so I am sure if you shop around it can be bought at a much lower price. ~ DESIGN & EXPERIENCE ~ This Acoustic Solutions DAB radio is a great looking little radio, which has a nice mixture of a retro style design while still incorporating a modern funky touch to the style. It is sized at around 18 cm H, 23 cm W and 8 cm D; which is small and lightweight enough to carry around with you or place on a table or desk without it taking up lots of room. The DAB radio has brown colouring scheme for the handle and mixture of ... more

Advantages Advantages Retro-styling (Kind of), easy to operate, easy setup, long antenna, cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not very loud, not amazing sound quality

I bought this DAB radio over other DAB radios mainly because of its retro styling. Whenever I look at it, it reminds me of the radios you see in movies of the command tower for airports or in battleships when the users are calling for help or giving a warning. I see this resemblance due to the angles nature of the radio on the stand as well as the two dials on the front along with the small LCD display. As I have said, the interface on this radio is a dual-dial and single LCD display. This combinations allows for easy selection of radio station along with interactive information regarding the ... more

Advantages Advantages Number of channels and crackle free sound

Disadvantages Disadvantages rubbish handle, weak speakers

I bought this from ebay for only £40 and found it to be not bad. Out of the box it is so easy to set up, just press the autotune button and in seconds you have access to over 70+ channels. You can use it on mains (lead supplied) or batteries. The LCD screen scrolls smoothly, is clear and easy to read. The speakers are a bit weak and tinny when turned up but has a line out which I plug in to my sound sytem and the sound was crystal clear. It also has a headphone socket which was equally good. It has a cool retro style designed by Ideo, London and has a handle come support rest (which is rather ... more

Advantages Advantages Good quality, battery powered, luggable

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite heavy battery drain

I bought a Portal 2 radio last week from Argos. They currently have a further £10 off the usual price, so it's even more attractive. The radio comes with a mains power adaptor, but can be powered with 6 'C'-size batteries. However, the current consumtion is a bit high for extended battery use, so I've just got some NiMH 'C' cells, and will try them as soon as they've had their initial charge. I can't understand why other reviewers suggest that the DAB sensitivity is "poor". I didn't find sensitivity to ever be a problem, and I have yet to find a location where it "just won't work" I intend to ... more

Advantages Advantages Great value, well equipt

    Disadvantages Disadvantages DAB sensitivity poor

For sometime I have been on the look out for a portable DAB receiver. I already have an Evoke 1 which I am very pleased with but wanted a receiver that was able to run on batteries. I noticed the £10 off reduction at the moment at Argos making the receiver now only £69.99 For the money you get a cleanly, solidly designed radio with DAB and also FM which includes RDS and radiotext on FM showing what station/programme details you are tuned to..standard issue on DAB but a surprise to find it included on the FM side. The radio operates on a mains adapter which is supplied or 6 'C' size batteries ... more
