Advantages Advantages Cheap and good quality.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Limited range. No deli counter. No multi-buy deals or loyalty scheme.

Why Aldi? I've recently been trying to cut back on all my expenses and decided that switching to a cheaper no-frills supermarket could be the way forward. We decided Aldi would be the supermarket of choice because it is the closest to us. Is it cheaper? We switched from Sainsbury's to Aldi a few months ago. Whilst most items seemed to be cheaper, it was hard to tell whether or not we were saving a significant amount of money. My other half and I have always played the guess the total game as our groceries are going through the checkout. We used to be quite good at this when we shopped at ... more

Advantages Advantages Well laid out stores, high quality for low prices.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Electrical goods can be an unknown quantity, not enough checkout staff.

Shopping in Aldi is a much more pleasurable experience than it used to be. When the stores first opened in 1990 I remember them being sawdust-filled, warehouses full of strange continental foodstuffs. However, I also remember them being a major part of the "bean war" on which tins of beans dropped to 3p! Aldi stores have come a long way since then and no longer have the "shame value" attached to them during my childhood. No longer do children make parents take Marks and Spencer carrier bags with them! What Aldi has retained though, is the cheap prices. Fortunately, they have now combined this ... more

5 Stars Booze Cruise to Aldi! Review with images 11/06/2004
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Excellent value for money, everything in same place

Disadvantages Disadvantages can't do a whole shop there yet

Aldi is a German supermarket. Every branch in the World are to the exacting same size, spec and layout. They stock non branded food and goods and they can knock the spots off even M&S for quality and flavour. I'M NOT GOING THERE! ---------------------------------------- The shops were basic, like the old days of Kwik Save when you had boxes stacked up and the staff had to memorise everything in the store as there were no prices attached/on the products only on the shelves. Sometimes you'd visit and the store was in turmoil like the remnants of market day and looked dirty and "rough" (don't get ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent value for money items

Disadvantages Disadvantages Still some things you cannot get

Aldi ~ In this present financial climate, when money is a little tight for a lot of people, I decided that it was time for me to tighten my belt too, when it comes to the weekly shop. I always get my branded items from Asda or Tesco as there are some things, like particular brands of coffee for example, that I will not compromise on and will not buy the shops own. However for general things like my fruit and vegetables for example I would rather save my pennies and go to the cheapest place that I can find. I am very lucky to have an Aldi only a couple of miles down the road from me and I say ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap, Seamless, Quick

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lack of variety, Not many big branded items

Shopping at ALDI has always had a level brand snobbery attached to it, for instance some people feel that their products are inferior to the market leading big branded products that you see in the big supermarket advertisements and store shelves. All of my friends think I'm a bit on the cheap side. I digress, for anyone who knows the ALDI experience and knows what I'm talking about in my opinion I think you should "give it a try". First let me start by talking about the arrival at any ALDI store in the country. Like most supermarkets you will find a car park, generally always looking quite ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent value, good range of products with new offers each week

Disadvantages Disadvantages My local store could be bigger

I have to admit, like a lot of people in this country I used to think Aldi was a cheap supermarket that sold cheap and lower quality products. I am happy to say now though, for the last 10 or so years that Aldi is an excellent shop that sell good quality products at fantastic value for money. We are lucky to have one quite close by and now I always go to this store to buy the food shopping for our household. The first few times I went there, I'd fill the trolley and wince until I saw the total at the checkout, something I was used to doing when I shopped at the more popular supermarkets! Much ... more

Advantages Advantages Good quality at reasonable prices.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages smaller selection.

I must admit from the start that my original impression of Aldi was tained a long time ago when i visited the store that opened a few miles down the road not long after it opened. The place was chaos incarnate, with all the products out of place, pricing unclear, staff non existant and tills that took cash only. I never went back again after that experience. I bit the bullet about three weeks ago and dropped into the same Aldi for some bits and bobs as i was waiting for a CD player to be fitted to my car next door. What a pleasant surprise, it was a complete transformation. First of all, the ... more

Advantages Advantages Superb value especially on fruit and veg

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes a lack of choice on goods

I'm not going to bore you with the history of the store as that's got nothing really to do with why you might shop there. We had always shied away from Aldi because in the past they wouldn't take credit cards and we normally pay by this method to get points on our card. However, to attract new custom they now take all major forms of credit cards so that's a tick in my box. The stores are springing up everywhere, yes, even in South Wales, and the mother-in-law (gawd bless her) remarked one day how cheap the fruit and veg was. A few months ago, we went in, and the secret is to find out their ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, cheerful, great special offers

Disadvantages Disadvantages Queues and some things can be a bit dodgy.

I don't know how to go about reviewing a whole supermarket chain but I love Aldi and feel it is my duty to honour them with my prose. Trouble is that I like to amuse my self be writing things that make me laugh and I'm going to struggle big-time. I'll start by saying that Aldi is no longer a name to cause shame and is, I think, even a trendy place to shop nowadays. We are blessed in our small town to have one and everyone who is everyone seems to go there at least every so often. This has got to be for a reason and the reason is simple - cheap and, in the main, good quality. Aldi has grown and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Low costs

Disadvantages Disadvantages Long queues at checkouts

Introduction As times are hard and people are trying to cut back on their spending, low cost supermarkets are becoming more fashionable. One such supermarket is Aldi. Originating from Germany, Aldi now have over 400 stores across the UK and almost 2000 worldwide. Aldi specialises in selling everyday items from lesser known brands and manufacturers ensuring that for this reason, the prices are considerably lower than what you would expect to pay from the mainstream supermarkets. Approaching the store Despite being a budget supermarket, Aldi has the look and feel of the major high street ... more
