Rice pudding. Conjures up pictures in my mind of the school canteens' with that lovely nutmeg skin on it. lumpy, cold, hot,or baked (Usually to a cinder)-I used to love every last morsel of it.I don't know who was the most suprised...me or the dinner ladies.-Everyone else couldn't stand the stuff. But I would be there-scoffing the second helpings with my portly waistband gently increasing! My nans' was the best ever, and this poor synthetic imitation; "Ambrosia Creamed Rice",with its' distinctive, milky, yes creamy but tinny taste comes a very, very poor second. My 9yr old son adores it. I eat it ... more

It’s white and a little lumpy, very creamy and tastes delicious and I just love a mouthful or two. In case you were wondering what am I talking about, well of cause it has to be Ambrosia creamed rice one of my favorite puddings. This delightful pudding has been around since 1917 and is made by using fresh milk in the lovely countryside of Devon. It comes in a 425g tin, which costs between 55p and 70p, depending on where you purchase it. It is widely available at all major supermarkets and little convenience shops everywhere. Did you know that there is actually a glass and a half of milk ... more

When I wrote my review of Mullerice Caramel I received several comments from people who said that Ambrosia creamed rice was much nicer. At the time I did not know whether this was true or not as I had only ever tried Mullerice. However I decided to put my trust in my fellow Cioaers and give Ambrosia creamed rice a try. As it that wasn’t enough it received further endorsement from my late grandfather. According to my mother he used to love it. So I popped off to Asda and bought myself some. You can buy Ambrosia creamed rice in large tins which contain about 400grams. However as I am only one ... more

Advantages Advantages Devon knows how they make it so creamy

Rice pudding, it’s so simple isn’t it. 1.) Get some rice and boil, drain, add milk/cream and mix and add some sugar 2.) Buy a tin of ready-made rice, open tin add spoon and eat. This is so simple. That’s start out with the fact that I don’t like rice pudding heated in any fashion. Cold is for me, which makes tinned rice pudding ideal. Ambrosia; I used to eat this stuff like it was going out of fashion but recently I haven’t. Today I decided on a tin full of it. It comes in a blue tin (well the tin is metal but the wrapper is blue) with Ambrosia in blue letters on ... more

    Advantages Advantages Quick, Cheap, Healthy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Vile, Strange Colour, Tastes Old

Having read several ops praising this product to the hilt, I felt I just had to stick my oar in and disagree. My mother never liked cooking, and my dad’s repertoire consisted only of bacon and baked beans, and as such, Ambrosia tinned rice pudding played a significant part in my (nutritionally challenged) upbringing. I would get home from school, ask what was for tea, and often get the response, ‘Tinned rice pudding, tinned rice pudding with jam, tinned rice pudding with syrup, tinned rice pudding with dried sultanas’. It is not these memories of tastebud deprivation which drive me to dislike ... more

Hello all, it’s been a while now since my last opinion but I am back with one on my all time favorite pudding. Ambrosia creamed rice. Or just plain old rice pud up here in West Yorkshire. I am by most peoples standards, rather mature in my age but I can remember eating this as a young woman, ah, the memories. Ambrosia creamed rice is a very versatile pudding and can be served with almost anything sweet. You could try it with fresh fruit (any kind), jam, syrup, honey or even my favorite, chocolate sauce. Also, it tastes just as nice weather you eat it hot or cold. Although I prefer to put ... more

This is a bit of a departure for me, as my other ops have all been entertainment related, but….Earlier this evening I went to the shop to buy some bread and a few other bits when I saw the tins of Ambrosia Cream Rice sat there on the shelf. I haven’t eaten any for years and suddenly got a huge craving for the stuff and bought a couple of tins. 99p for two 425g cans…Contain yourselves ! O.K now the boring bit. Ambrosia is a registered trademark of a company called Bestfoods UK Ltd and the Ambrosia Creamed Rice is produced for Bestfoods in Surrey, or as the can says ….’From their Devonshire ... more

During my boyhood I was virtually weaned on Ambrosia creamed Rice. My maternal grandmother loved it and since she was the matriarchal figure in our household, her word and views were not to be questioned. We frequently had Ambrosia for dessert at lunch time, at dinner time and sometimes at breakfast time with a dollop of raspberry or strawberry jam. Ambrosia Ltd was founded in Devon by Alfred Morris in 1917. This was a time of war, food shortage and rationing and the new company was to make a rich baby food from the full cream Devon milk produced on farms around the Lifton area. Later on in ... more

Advantages Advantages Creamy and by far the best rice pudding on the market!

Disadvantages Disadvantages slightly expensive, but i'd definately say it was worth the extra!

++What is rice pudding?++ Rice pudding is a dessert, originating from Asia. It is made from a combination of rice, milk, sugar and often cream. ++How and when do you eat rice pudding?++ Rice pudding can be eaten both hot and cold, and many people add things to it such as jam (and my partner has a habit of adding more sugar, which seems disgusting to me, but each to their own!). Rice pudding is most suitable to eat as a dessert (in case the name rice 'pudding' didnt make that obvious!). And I dont know if this is just me, but rice pudding seems to be a real comfort food, and since i was alot ... more
