Advantages: Great LCD, Battery Life, Versatility, just an awesome device. Disadvantages: Converting your DVD's for it can be technical.
The Archos AV500 is a mobile DVR; Digital Video recorder. So what does that mean and why should you be interested? Hopefully this review will help you.
Lets start with a basic specification, the Archos AV50 comes in 3 sizes (yes 3 despite what Archos' own site indicates!) 30, 60 and 100GB. It can play Divx 5 and 6, as well as Xvid and Microsoft's PlayForSure video content. It can play WMA, MP3 and WAV files. It can record from a number of sources ... ...is effectively mono. The headphones Archos supplies are fine but you'll want your own pair. Upgrading shows the sound quality of the AV500 to be of awesome quality.
How do you get the videos onto the device ? Now this is where the AV500 starts to falter. If like me, you are a techie and have been playing around with Divx and Xvid for a while and know the ins and out of the Divx\Xvid encoding format., you'll be right at home here. You'll do what ...

Advantages: Excellent device with many features. rock solid. Disadvantages: Video compatability is an issue
So what is the Archos AV500:
In short it is a DVR which stands for Digital Video Recorder and allows the user to record, view and store videos and pictures from an external device like your TV/computer. However the Av500 has many more great functions that I have found incredibly useful. Il talk more about these later.
Basic Features:
Record directly from your TV, VCR, DVD player, cable or satellite box. Make scheduled recordings. Store up to 130 ... ...Browsing around I found the Archos AV500 and got it for a very reasonable price of £130 brand new and still sealed on Ebay.
In the box:
When I first opened the box for the AV500 I was quite surprised. I was expecting the device, a power cable and a USB. Instead there were many other connections, cables and even a remote control similar to the ones you use for the TV. Heres a picture with all the goodies that you get http://i.expansys.com/i/b/b126336.jpg

Advantages: Slips in pocket, amazing graphics, quick start and very versatile Disadvantages: Buttons seem to be a bit flimsy, supplied carrying case needs more room for accessories
I was initially going to buy a MP3 player but then I spied this little beauty in Curry's for £399 (you bargain hunters can get then for under £300 if you search hard). For £150 more than the MP3 player I had bought something that could keep me amused for many hours with enough room for 80 x 2 hour videos or thousands of songs and pictures. Because I was going on a long flight, and I needed something to keep me occupied, I recorded several movies ... ...you can even schedule it like a VCR.
I was a bit dubious of the battery life (rechargable) but alas it did it's self proud and played movies continually for 6 hours on our journey. I had actually made a spare battery pack out of 4 AA rechargable batteries (cost £5 to make), but I didn't need it. There is a headset out plug, but if you buy a twin adaptor (£2) 2 of you can listen\watch at the same time. The versatility of it come into it's own when ...

(+) Great screen quality and size, built in speaker and stand. (-) The only downside is that it is fragile, and can be hard to get used to the on screen keyboard.
