Advantages: Funny and realistic Disadvantages: Only flight crew will enjoy it
I first read this book when I was 16. I was still at school and eager to grow up, pass my exams and get out into the real world. My dream job was to be an air hostess and I looked on Amazon and found this book. Nowadays there are quite a few flight attendant books on Amazon but apart from Tea Coffee or Me, this was the only one I found.
The book is now all dog eared and falling apart as I have read it so many times and leant it to other crew members. ... ...book is very true to life and realistic. Rene may seem like she is moaning but everyone I know grumbles about their jobs.
About the author: Rene Foss originally wanted to be an actress but her father advised her to get a ‘proper job.’ She has been flying for twenty years for a major US carrier and through some Googling it seems to be Northwest Airlines. There isn’t much about the Rene on the Internet apart from a handful of interviews. She used ...

Advantages: A few amusing moments Disadvantages: Mostly moans, sketches and lists
I think we all complain about our jobs from time to time, don't we. We all come home sometimes and think, "Why am I doing this?" We all like to let if out and get some sympathy. Flight attendant (that's "stewardess" in English) Rene Foss has taken the moan to new heights by not only putting on a stage show, “Around the World in a Bad Mood” but also writing a book about it, based on the show. Now a stewardess’ life is supposed to be glamorous - flying ... ...hotels at the company (ie customers') expense, meeting interesting people. Of course the truth is that being a flight att..er....stewardess also means working in delays or disruption without always having information or control of events. It means that there are other groups of people - airport staff, engineers etc - who do their jobs to their priorities, not to her convenience. Last, but not least, it means that you have to meet, serve and interact ...

Advantages: Semi-funny Disadvantages: Not funny enough
Last week I watched ‘View From The Top’ (minimally promoted film with Gwyneth Paltrow and Mike Myers in) and it prompted me to dig out this book for a re-read. Like the film, this book is about the life of an air hostess flying domestic American and long haul flights. Rene Foss, the author, is an air hostess turned entertainer, and performs in a musical she wrote herself which looks at the wild and wacky world of flight attending. This spurred the ... ...memoir/dummies’ guide to air hostessing.
This book is pre-September 11th look at the grime behind the glamour. The 3am starts for mid morning flights; the stream of often obnoxious and frequently thick passengers you find on board; the horror of being ‘on call’ where even so much as leaving home is forbidden lest you not be on hand when the we-need-you phone call comes through. Bits of it are new and interesting, but other bits are common sense ...
