Advantages Advantages Size, Ease of Use

Disadvantages Disadvantages Small keyboard, small screen

This review looks at one of many netbooks to be released in the UK over the past few months, ASUS's EEE PC 701 SD. The model I have is fitted with Windows XP and has an 8Gb hard drive. I bought it on special offer for £155. Appearance The 701SD is absolutely tiny. It weighs around a kilogram and is roughly the same size as a hardback reading book when in the closed position. It comes in a neat box along with instructions,a mains charger, a protective case and a system CD. It has a 7 inch screen which is absolutely tiny but is still perfectly functional. The unit has three USB sockets ... more

Advantages Advantages Small compact but infinitely useable, beating smart phones such as Blackberry or iphone.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not many, I just wish it would work with my router.

I've carried laptops around, and found them cumbersome and time consuming - the temptation is to carry your full desktop around with you, and eventually this takes a toll on the boot up and close down time which can be frustrating when time is limited. Laptops and motorcycles are not natural partners either, and my personal lappy soon displayed clearly that it was not intended to be carried in a pannier where it was shaken contantly. I've tried a smart phone, but couldn't get along with the tiny keyboard and tiny screen. Fine for people under 40 years, but frustrating when your eyesight begins ... more

Advantages Advantages Small, hardy, user friendly

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not much storage space, best used for surfing only

**Disclaimer - this is not intended to be a full technical run down, this is what I think and feel about this netbook with regards to how I use it - primarily for the internet!** I absolutely adore my Asus Eee PC. I have been using it for several years now and with the exception of a very, very reasonably priced replacement keyboard (coffee + dog = keyboard death) it's still going strong. It's pretty bomb proof due to not being over complicated. It comes equipped with Linux and is ready to go. I don't know a huge amount about Linux so I won't try to describe it in any huge detail, but overall ... more

Advantages Advantages Small, good battery life, easy to use, great for wifi, built in webcam.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Linux makes it awkward for non techies to install new software, no bluetooth

The unit is small, powers up very quickly and is great as a basic entry level PC for word processing and internet browsing. Unfortunately new out of the box it could not connect to WPA wifi until an upgrade had been done which again is very easy but will need a physical internet connection. The full desktop is not easy to switch on and due to the included operating system you will have problems installing and running any other software unless you are good with linux which is a million miles from windows. Asus do include the drivers for windows on the recovery disk and also full instructions on ... more

These things are like gold dust everywhere, so I was fortunate that a local store had a few in stock. It cost £219. Start up times is about 15-20 seconds...frankly quite amazing. It comes ... more

    Advantages Advantages Price, size, portability

Disadvantages Disadvantages Processor power, memory capacity

The ASUS EEE PC 701 model is an extremely affordable, small and portable netbook with a 7" screen and built in wifi card designed primarily for internet use. The standard model comes with a built in 2 gigabyte solid state hard drive and comes in a variety of colours and finishes ranging from matt white through to pastel pink. The white ones are probably your best bet as in my opinion they are slightly more stylish, echoing shades of the Macbook Air. The EEE PC comes with a built in microphone on all models and webcam on most models and runs on a Linux based operating system although it can be ... more

Advantages Advantages Small and Portable, Cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Small HD, No CD drive

Well I just love this laptop. It is everything I want in a laptop. It does have a few minor flaws but the pros totally outweigh them. Appearance This laptop is a great looking laptop. Only the size of an A5 notepad, it is small and yet it still manages to look smart yet fun. I chose the baby blue cover for my asus eee but any colour looks just as good. Inside, the layout is neat and tidy with reasonable sized keys for this small laptop. The sides of the laptop look clean in simple as is to be expected with a small laptop like this. Without a CD drive, it allows more room for the 3 USB ports ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to use, light

Disadvantages Disadvantages small, must learn Linux

I bought one of these 2 weeks ago and even though it is small and not the easiest screen to see on, I love it! Was able to easily connect to the Internet away from home, check files I had on a USB drive, without going to an Internet Cafe! It is light and easy to carry with you wherever you want to go! Only problem I have with it is that I will have to learn Linusx to do some of the things I want to do as my digital camera does not have a driver. Would have prefered XP but will learn what I need in time. All in all, for less than £300 I got a great deal and recommend it for all travellers or ... more

Advantages Advantages Size, Price, Speed, Screen, Looks

Disadvantages Disadvantages Storage, Keyboard is fiddly

I bought my Eee PC In January for about £240. Mine is the Black 4GB version and I bought it to have something ultra portable to take on holiday for some light web browsing. First off, I have to say I think the build quality is very good, the laptop despite being very small, feels sturdy and the keys aren't loose or flimsy. Start -up is exceptionally quick thanks to running Linux, although XP can be installed if desired. To be honest, the current programs do everything I need them to do so I don't think I'll be installing XP. Linux also has a wide variety of programs available that I would like ... more

4 Stars Quick review of Asus Eee PC 701 by Chrissymojo1 05/08/2008
Hey, bought this for £199 from pc world on the basis that it was small, very portable and cheap. Didn't really know too much about it. It is an incredible little machine. Have paired it with a 4GB SD card to triple the storage capacity. The processor won't break records, and the media playback software is poor, falling out of synch very quickly. But as a portable internet surfer and word processor, it is an incredibly capable machine. I am currently using mine to record audio from sessions in the studio. The laptop does get quite hot and streaming video is ... more
