Advantages Advantages Running improves your health and fitness.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The sport is tainted by drug cheats.

WRITTEN November 2010 INTRODUCTION I used to be an ardent fan of athletics in the 1970s. But that enthusiasm has waned a little now. Due to the sands of time, my memory is not what it used to be. I have trawled through a few web sites trying to rekindle my memories. Some of this op is more personal for me and meaningless for anyone else. But I hope that the amateur psychiatrists amongst you will be able to glean the workings of my mind. EARLIEST MEMORIES My earliest sporting memories were in South Wales of my parents discussing the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. I can still remember the distinctive ... more

Berlin Olympic Stadium The World Athletics Championships August 15th-23rd Jessie Owens and all that... Athletics has a new hero, Usain Bolt, but if he fails a drug test then the sport is dead in the water, make no mistake. That's why he won't fail a drug test. Think of that statement as you please. I'm sure all the wonderful bravado and laid back Jamaican showbiz cool is the real man but it may also be a front to distract from that horrible truth. I think he's clean and I'm praying he's clean, and what a star he is, the 100m final the highlight of this week championship in Berlin, this guy ... more

Over the last month we’ve been overly spoon-fed what the Doctor’s involvement was to do with Michael Jackson’s departure. This ultimately beams the magnitude of how the West has depended on drugs. Drug taking; whether prescribed or otherwise, is available for the rich and famous, and most definitely to the super-human whose sport makes it their livelihood to give their very best while on the world stage ... more

Advantages Advantages Keeps you healthy, builds confidence and character

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor facilities

With the 2012 Olympic games being held in London Great Britain has at last a major opportunity to challenge and succeed in the field of sport. Over the years Britain has performed well and sometimes even excelled in many disciplines but it is probably in Athletics that most people will associate Olympic success. The names of Coe, Ovett, Thompson, Christie, Holmes still fire the imagination of athletes today. But if Britain is going to really challenge at the London games and perform to the high levels that other Host countries like Australia, Spain and Greece have in recent Olympics where are ... more

Advantages Advantages best training facilities for years, high profile meetings, lottery funding etc

Disadvantages Disadvantages the junior talent just is not making it to the top level in middle/long distances

As someone who – as a photographer – covers Athletics all over the country from Top Junior Level to International meets, I ask : What has happened to our great 'milers', 1500m runners ? Gone are the great days of Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Cram and Peter Elliott. Our seeming world domination at the distance has disappeared. Now the world is led by runners from the African nations. They have taken over the middle/long distance races. The Portuguese and the Spaniards have some decent runners, but even they are well behind the Kenyans, Ethiopians, the odd Somalian and Morroccan ... more

    Advantages Advantages A good spectacle

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lost its purpose

So we are a few days into the World Championships in Edmonton and alread its clouded in controversy. Why is it that whenever there is an major athletics meet, there is a huge scandal? Reason being is everyone is there for one thing. To prove they are the best. That means they are prepared to bend the rules or even break them, to win. In the past, countries deep in cold war, have stopped at nothing to prove themselves winners. Drugs, enhancers and even cheating have played a part. So far we have had little mention of drugs. Its not the drugs that we immediately think of when the word is ... more

Advantages Advantages A superb sport to participate in- excellent to watch!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Athletics - that's the sport! What a superb sport to do and watch! This world-wide sport has many events, including some such as the: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, Hurdles, Relay High-jump, Long-jump, Triple-jump, Pole-vault Discus, Javelin, Shot-putt, Hammer. These are commonly known events but many forget others such as the Decathlon and the other longer/shorter distant walk-races and runs! There is a lot to know about athletics and athletes including quality of performance, that we take for granted - we just sit back and watch the world-records being broken by huge margins. Another thing ... more

Advantages Advantages a host of hungry young sprinters all raring to go

Disadvantages Disadvantages big competition from the USA in every event

Olympic medals on the track for Britain are few and far between over the years. This year we have live medal hopes in both relays 4x100 and 4x400 as well as each of the individual sprints. Athletes like Dwain Chambers, Jason Gardner in the 100m, Ian Mackie - the 200m and Iwan Thomas, Jamie Baulch and Mark Richardson in the 400m - all have chances. Each should make the final and if they run to form...who knows? Richardson, of course, is currently undeer suspension due to a Nandrolone drugs charge - but if cleared he should be selected, be fresh and capable of anything. Chambers, Gardner along ... more

In the recent European Cup the men's high hurdles was yet another example of the controversy surrounding false start decisions in athletics. Three men were rather dubiously disqualified and even the officials were so dismayed they turned off their measuring equipment. It has always been an inexact science. Famously, Armin Hary the 1960 Olympic champion used to anticipate the gun by being the last to "get set". Consequently, he recorded some amazing apparent reaction times. The advent of automatic measurement, while identifying correctly the obvious anticipatory start, has created it's own ... more

For those athletes who have tested positive for major drugs such as steroids, the ban is not enough of a disincentive. I would suggest a better sanction might be to remove all records, world bests and titles ( from junior upwards ) leaving the athlete to start again, effectively, with a clean slate. It would be as if their career had never happened. This would also give others the recognition they always deserved by upgrading their past performances. The ban then would need to be no more than that required to ensure they were clear of the drugs previously used. The suggested sanction would ... more
