Parlabane: dead and using it

AdvantagesInteresting to discover techniques mediums use

DisadvantagesFirst half too much obvious prep for later revelations

"Brookmyre initially makes this a very difficult book to engage with. The opening chapter is written by a tabloid columnist describing an event that cannot be explained logically by current scientific understanding. Or can it? The style is exaggerated, familiar and grating, but I bore with it, waiting for the writer's more familiar, sharp style to kick in, which it does when Jack Parlabane, recurring jornalist, starts to tell his tale. Parlabane begins ..." Read review

Brookmyre swims, not sinks

AdvantagesEnjoyable, very readable, clever, amusing

DisadvantagesFirst chapter disappointing

"...is of the paperback Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks. This is the 12th book by the Scottish crime author Christopher Brookmyre. The edition I have was published in 2008 by Abacus. This is the first Brookmyre I've read. I've long been a fan of Colin Bateman and Amazon on their 'recommendations for you' page kept telling me that I was likely to also like Brookmyre. I read a few reviews of Brookmyre on Ciao and thought he did sound like someone ..." Read review

Luv a duck!! Review with images

AdvantagesAn unusual but captivating book

DisadvantagesCan take a likttle while to get used to the format

"Being a granddad I often find myself in demand for babysitting duties!! It was on one of these sessions that I found myself alone with the kids asleep, nothing I fancied on the TV and no book to read. So I turns to scouring the bookshelf and found a large turquoise book with the picture of a rubber duck on the front!! This book was called ‘Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks’ by Christopher Brookmyre (an author that I’d never come across before); ..." Read review

Unsinkable Attack

AdvantagesClever plot, twists and turns

DisadvantagesNot as funny as previous work

"Christopher Brookmyre is a fairly well known Scottish author who writes what is referred to as Tartan Noir. Tartan Noir draws on traditions of Scottish Literature and often tends towards the cynical. Typical Tartan Noir usually featues anti-heroes as protagonists - the reader is not automatically going to like them much. Other Tartan Noir writers include Ian Rankin and Val McDermid. Brookmyre's books are varied in content but are always sharp and ..." Read review
