...happy owner of a 1985 Austin Montego until it clapped out on me during winter 2 years back. It lived a good long life. I had very little trouble with my Montego in the 3 years I owned it for. During the time I had my Montego I bought another spares or repairs so I was able to swap any parts over. What is an Austin Montego?

My Montego in the 70,00 miles needed 4 new tyres at the front and 2 new ones at the back. Other problems I had with my Montego were the clutch and cable, battery, radiator and some welding to the rear wheel arch which is quite expensive, about £100. Interior.

Advantages: Good Vsibility, Nice Ride, Good looks, Economic Disadvantages: Hear it Rust From 100 miles Away, Poor Electrical Connections
I was one of the mugs that bought one of these things new in 1984. The car seemed a dream in the showroom with good looks, nice seats, and great all-round visibility.
The 'Monti' appeared to suit my needs, being large enough for various leisure pursuits, shopping, and taking the kids out. Ideal yeah, but the dream would soon to be shattered. All will become clear in the course of this review.
This car is more than adequate for its purpose and the ... ...well because I used it regularly to tow a caravan to race meetings, loaded up with two motorcycles . There were always at least two of us in the car (often three) and any spare space was filled with gear whilst the reasonably large boot took the enormous tool-box and spares we needed.
Furthermore, the car excelled in two other areas - all round visibility and fuel consumption - the 'Monti' was glazed like The Crystal Palace and the S.U. carb ensured ...

I owned my 'G' plate Montego for almost a year and went through a few thoughts in that time.
I went from thinking it was a great car and wondered why there were so few people owning one, to thinking that it was just destined to be in a scrapyard from day one.
My 'Monty' was the 1.6 LX model which gave a sunroof and electric windows for luxury. Central Locking was also thrown in. Common problems here were that one or more of the doors wouldnt lock/open ... ...rubbers. And the lecky windows would be slower than a week in jail!!!
There is a few major problems with this old classic aswell. Cylinder heads blowing in the engine( I replaced two in the space of 16'000 miles) and water creeping into the boot. Now I can guess what you're thinking. "Water in the boot aint serious" WRONG!!! You see, the water creeps into the boot through the ill fitting rubber seals,rolls along the boot floor and into the passenger ...
