...new highly publicized move from BBC1 to channel five this month. Yup this review is on the Australian hit soap Neighbours, which was first, launched in 1985, and in 2005 celebrated its 20th anniversary. From a very young age, neighbours was watched in my household, my mother was a huge fan of it, and use to watch the evening show, having been at work during the daytime. It was something different and out of the norm, compared to the usual soaps such ... ...and well funny at times. Since its launch many years ago, neighbours has covered so many dramatic storyline, deaths, weddings, crashes, fires and so on. Although I would agree in saying the show can be very cheesy, it still has some sort of drawing appeal and actually makes you want to watch it. Im still a huge follower of neighbours, however I don't go out of my way to come home and watch it, like most people would agree, neighbours was huge back ...

Everybody needs good Neighbours
One of my favourite Australian export shows is Neighbours and I have been a fan ever since I was a child, well over twenty years, as it first began airing in Australia in 1985 and in England in 1986! It is now shown on channel 5 in England.
The show revolves around Ramsay Street in the fictional Australia town of Erinsborough. Ramsay street is a cul-de-sac which enables the residents to pop into each other’s houses ... ...as nosy neighbours. Most of the residents are friends but of course you always get fights and scandal with people living that close to one another.
I think this show works because it shows a street where you would actually like to be a resident. It makes the street look like fun and that you would love to have friends who will do anything for you living all around you. Of course I think British audiences keep tuning in too because of all the lovely ...

"Neighbours… Everybody loves good neighbours" Well, slight alteration, but we would if it was good. Yep, catch on, everybody probably would love good neighbours (i.e. the programme) if Neighbours was good. Well, yes, I am being harsh, as Neighbours is good, but in a bad way. You know how you laugh at those cheesily bad jokes just to keep the joker happy, this has the same concept. Neighbours is twenty-five minutes long, and is on at 13:45 and ... ...with my lunch break. Bearing in mind I am in the sixth form, this means that this means that there is something to do on rainy days (or otherwise!) when we are allowed in our common room. Currently locked out for ripping out LAN ports from the wall, after the escapades of taking screws out of chairs and knocking over a can of coke with a frisbee a couple of weeks before! Anyway, the programme…
The programme opens with a few short scenes from ...

Advantages: Very good soap Disadvantages: Addictive
We all know that famous tune, the one at the start of Neighbours. And it makes everything sound so great. But in reality, when you watch the programme, the fantastic acting and the great storylines really do touch your heart.
For example, Madge Bishop died recently, a character whom we had got to know very well, and I felt rather sad, probably sadder than Harold, her husband. The tense storylines really are gripping and Neighbours is one of the ... ...Neighbours is very interesting, with characters such as Jack Ramsay back there in the beginning. Advantages: Refreshing soap - always sunny there! Disadvantages: Some bad actors in it
Introduction ~~
Despite it being famous for unbelievably bad acting which has actually got better in recent years Neighbours has always been a firm favourite soap for teenagers. Although Neighbours has never just appealed to teenagers and young people, it has approached issues that do not affect young people and teenagers but usually old people. For example Madge's brave battle against cancer. Storylines ~~
Storylines in Neighbours have varied ... ...caught cheating in class to jobs being on the line its all happened in Neighbours. Though the producers seem to end our daily doss of Neighbours with a real cliffhanger. For example one Neighbours episode was about a court battle and just as a spokesman for the jury was to announce the verdict we heard the jolly Neighbours tune.
Characters/Actors ~~
Some of the actors in Neighbours are very good actors and are highly talented. For example the ...

Advantages: Sunny, happy.....used to be so much fun... Disadvantages: Dull, cheesy, boring characters, nothing ever happens, none of the old-style grittiness and black humour, and then there's Harold.......
"G'day Doug!"
"G'day Jim."
"Wanna come over to my place for a barbie and a coupla beers?"
"But Doug, we've been arch enemies for several months now, squabbling and bickering like two nancy schoolgirls in more and more unamusing situations every time, while our wives watch us and laugh behind our backs......Why ya bein' so nice all of a sudden mate?"

Aaaaahh, Neighbours, the feelgood soap. That happy-go-lucky Aussie export.....but it just seems too happy nowadays, especially when compared to the English soap operas. For example, if the above scene had been taken from Brookside it would have ended rather differently:
"Good point mate....crack open those lagers and gizza hug...."
"But Jimmy, why'd ya just shove those barbie ...

Advantages: unintentionally hilarious, actor changs Disadvantages: Michelle Scully
Where in the world do GP's work in hospitals, classrooms exist where all but three students are mute, and there is always fresh carrot cake on sale at all time? No, not Norwich (only turnip cake, I'm afraid), but Erinsborough, the smallest city in the world judging by the fact that everyone knows everyone and any strangers are either a) relatives, either known or long-lost, or b) bad news, and likely to cause misery and destruction within 4 episodes ... ...has recently celebrated its 15th anniversary, and has provided work for most of Australia during that time. Ramsay Street, (or as Jim et al preferred it, 'Robinson Street'), has played host to hundreds of well loved characters and Michelle Scully over the years. Advantages: erm....jesse spencer left and I got older...so none Disadvantages: cheesy theme tune, predictable, recycled storylines, crap characters who all need a slap with a spade
Although it is hard to believe anyone who claims they have not watched this show at some time or another, I suppose it is just my form of trying to justify my own crimes of watching this show when I was younger.
Of course I am tempted to say it was better then in a vain bid to make myself seem slightly more credible, I will resist and hang my head in rightful shame.
From the theme tune to the supposedly idyllic setting of Ramsey street and its ... ...experience little less than grating. Daring a risk recently to take a peek whilst doing the washing up, I was unsurprised to find myself saying the lines before they were spoken, and this was *not* because I'd watched the show earlier that same day. Predictable situations, overally annoying characters and extremely cheesy music do little to help BBC's tea time offering. Of course, Neighbours isn't run against much competition which ensures its mystifying ...

Advantages: Being an Addict, the storylines Disadvantages: Not on enough times per day. We want 2 episodes per day!!
Neighbours is like Marmite, but more Marmitey. you either love it far too much, or don't see what the fuss is about. I love it, despite the ludicrous storylines, random characters, and the ridiculously fast-paced way of life in the Street, where, in the real world, no-one would know what the hell was going on half the time. Still, every day at 5:35 i drop everything and head for the tv. Without fail.

Advantages: Entertainable, light hearted, and nicely predictable. Disadvantages: Rather cheesy, but not bad cheese really.
This is one soap that is utter and complete cheese. But amusing, entertainable cheese. I watch this programme as regularly as clockwork (if that makes sense.) Its on every weekday at 1:45pm and then repeated at 5:30pm. I have to watch the 5:30 showing, as I go to school during the day, but thankfully, its just as good.

Too bad I haven’t got good neighbours, or I’d be singing “Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours”, along with the ‘used-to-be-hit’ TV show.
Neighbours is an Australian soap – as if you didn’t know! – which started in the mid-late eighties. It is shown every weekday at 1.45p.m. and 5.35p.m. Like most other soaps, it never actually runs for that period of time. I timed it once – me being ... ...lasted only 19 minutes. A bonus for Neighbours, unlike most other soaps, is that there are not adverts halfway through it. Although, contradicting myself there, Eastenders, which is a far far far better soap, doesn’t either. I used to be an avid viewer of Home & Away, as well as Neighbours. Both of them being “would ya put us a shrimp on the old Barbie mate, me Kangaroo’s playin’ up” sort of soaps.
