Advantages Advantages Utterly genius first three series

Disadvantages Disadvantages One series too many

The Royle Family is the finest comedy ever to have graced British television. There. I’ve got my prejudices out of the way to start – that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. And, yes, I’m (originally) Northern. I don’t tend to go much for new comedies so when the first episode of this series was aired I didn’t bother. But then I heard howls of laughter coming from downstairs, not just giggles but utter belly laughs, like Santa Claus on speed. I knew then I’d missed an absolute treat and so determinedly sat down to watch the second episode, thinking there was no way it would make me laugh ... more

Advantages Advantages Laugh a second, great characters, superb script

Disadvantages Disadvantages only half an hour and 6 episodes a series

The greatest show in British Television history. FACT. If you don’t agree go write an opinion. In all seriousness though you have to marvel at Caroline Aherne’s Genius in getting The Royle Family made. You can just imagine the pitch: “Well, it’s about a family and occasionally their friends, who sit and watch TV.” “Is that it?” “um…no they smoke and insult each other” “OK, we’ll put it BBC2 and give you 6 episodes” (By the way for any crazy people - I was not actually there. Don’t sue me for misinterpretation ... more

Advantages Advantages Makes my life seem exciting!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bores me to death!

Phew! Just what is the appeal of this show?! I can’t see it myself – I find it immensely boring despite having a very respectable cast, few though they may be. The Royle Family – Ricky Tomlinson (Dad), Sue Johnston (Mum), Caroline Aherne (daughter) and Ralf Little (son). All very well known and impressive actors/performers which is probably just as well as any unknowns would probably make this show even more of a crashing bore. The series is currently off our screens (BBC1) I believe but in the last series Aherne’s character married her dire monotonous boyfriend and ... more

Advantages Advantages Earthy, working class, true to life, scripts, cast

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Gutsy Northern drama - well, no actually, more like Beer Gutted Living Room Sadness, as Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne (nee Hook) create a comedy series which is as true to REAL LIFE as you can probably get in this day and age. Aherne and Cash are brilliant comic actors (rather than comedians) from Manchester who were the brains behind Mrs Merton, but whose later creation is by far and away the biggest thing that either of them have ever done. Just a side issue first, Aherne used to be married to Peter Hook, the bassist with the most miserable band in the history of rock, Joy Division. You ... more

Advantages Advantages It's not on TV at the moment

Disadvantages Disadvantages It's on TV ever

I know I'm flying in the face of convention, I know I'll probably be denounced as a humourless idiot, and I know that the critics (and public) adore this programme with all their little hearts but so what? I HATE this show. But why Neil, you're a level headed, easy going type, who helps old ladies across the road, gives to charity (warning, deceit getting close to burn out), and loves the simple things in life? The premise is simple, down to Earth, Manchester family sit around the TV and erm...do nothing. Hang on, wasn't there supposed to be an overview of the programme there? Oh there was, I ... more

Advantages Advantages A terrific spirit lifter. Makes you wonder why we strive so hard when they have so little but are so happy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Next series seems a long time coming

Is there going to be another series of the Royle Family? I sincerely hope so. For half an hour we become a 'fly on the wall' in the home of Jim and Barbara Royle. What characters! Jim hasn't worked for years (I think it's his back or is it his leg?) He is so laid back he's practically horizontal! Barbara has never had any higher aspirations and is happy to be the family dogsbody. She has a part time job at the local cake shop which is great because she can bring home treats occasionally - you know the sort of thing, cakes that are squashed, past their sell by date, etc. It naturally follows ... more

    Advantages Advantages funny

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

The royale family is one of the funniest shows around at the moment, most probably because it is so true to life! Ricky Thomlinson, however scruffy he is, is a brilliant actor and suits the roll of Jim so much! I think the funniest part is when Cheryl from next door comes in boasting about her weight loss! It is brilliantly written by Craig Cash and Caroline Oherne. I missed the first series but have been able to watch the repeats on BBC1. I can't wait till the next series, my arse! ... more

    Advantages Advantages cleverly funny

Disadvantages Disadvantages are they talking about me

Funny yes, very funny indeed, but also a sad commentary on life in the Twenty First century, I would argue. Okay, I know it sounds more than a little pretentious but there really is no reason why Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash should not follow in the footsteps of other authors in using comedy to say something about the society in which they live. And it is very funny. We all have our favourite moments, our favourite characters, our favourite catchphrases. I like Jim best. He loves life and does not suffer fools gladly. The expression in his eyes is priceless when Sheryl is discussing the ... more

    Advantages Advantages -

    Disadvantages Disadvantages -

Since the Royle Family, hit the TV screen a while back ago, it has become a huge hit. Why?, cause for the first time you have a simple family, with working class background, lounging about moaning about the weather. It’s realistic and therefore not only appeals to most people, but its also humorous. I, am not suggesting that every family, crowds in front of the TV, as we don’t, well not like that. But it happens. Jim, the father, who’s so embarrassing, sits on his sofa, farting, embarrassing his son, and makes rude remarks. It’s really good the way, when ‘Who ... more

Advantages Advantages The cast deserve credit for breathing life into such dislikable characters

Disadvantages Disadvantages 30 minutes of hell incarnate

So, here's the choice, either you can spend 30 minutes watching something interesting and enjoyable, or, you can wander down to the local cheap supermarket, keeping your eyes and ears open for some halfwitted family clad in tracksuits and name brands, and follow them home. Once installed in their house, you can listen to their opinions (formed through the pages of the Sun) on all sorts of topical matters. Add to the witty repartee some farting, belching and swearing, and soon you'll be having the time of your life. You'll realise you've been wasting your time not taking an interest in the ... more
