Top of.....what

Advantages: Can see some exclusive videos/performances
Disadvantages: Not as good as it was!

Top of the pops has been going for many, many years and over them years the stage has been filled with many successful, great performers and some not so good!! The show was one of the first programmes, which featured bands/artistes performing live (or not so live!!) They also play the new released videos and quite regularly have exclusives. ~ ~ ~ What sort of music do they feature? ~ ~ ~ All sorts, they have featured performances from Brandy to ...
...show is to reach out to all ages and music tastes. Unfortunately as pop is very fashionable at the moment there is a lot of pop acts on the show such as S Club 7 and Atomic Kitten. However this will appeal to a lot of viewers. I have watched since I was very small, I can remember singing and dancing along to East 17 – Deep!! Over the years I have lost interest and my music taste has changed and a lot of artists that feature I am not particularly ...

Pop One Off

Advantages: See op
Disadvantages: See op

Okay, it’s not *so* bad that you want to turn over, but really, who can be arsed with TOTP anymore? It’s not that I find it DREADFUL, it’s just... there. Like rind on Edam, very fast rapping on a Busta Rhymes CD and a poorly head after 10 shots of gold tequila, you can always rely on it. Sort of. For over 30 years (it was launched in 1964 - thanks to stevethesleeve for correcting me!), Top Of The Pops, or ver Pops as I like to ...
...fairly apt, seeing as some of the acts and presenters should be in one, ha ha. The premise has always been the same from its conception – the top acts in the UK charts travel on down to the studios in London to mime (sometimes VERY badly) to their song and mug at the camera. It’s a simple enough set up, which was enlivened (and kept cheap) by the presence of Radio 1 DJs such as Dave Lee Travis (named “the hairy cornflake” ...

Top Of The Flops

Advantages: memories of Liz Kershaw's sassy earrings...
Disadvantages: pointlessly revamped and outdated

Every generation has its own memories of 'Top Of The Pops'. For some there's Jimmy Saville introducing Gary Glitter in a retrospectively sinister way. Imprinted on the memory of others is the be-maned Bruno Brookes and his chunky yellow microphone, reeling off statistics about Five Star and Wham! with the enthusiasm of a tartrazined-up toddler. And then of course there was that moment of organisational genius where the lisping Chris Eubank was the ...
...track 'Cecilia'… However, the 1990's and early 2000's have seen TOTP rebranded time and time again in an effort to remain the flagship music television programme. Whilst it was still getting twice the number of ratings as ITV's nearest rival, 'CD:UK', youth TV guru Andi Peters was put in charge of rebranding the show in an attempt to gain back its declining audience. Launching after a blaze of publicity this week, we were promised a new theme tune, ...

It will never die Unfortunately

Advantages: The odd decent song/video
Disadvantages: Far too many to bore people with.

TOTP has been teetering on the brink of the abyss for at least 20 odd years now and criticised by just about everyone who takes an interest in this show. Even back in the late 70s people moaned that it lacked any imagination because the bands they had on were always the same bands playing their "samey" music under a mimed-influence and trying to look sincere and/or cool but never both at the same time. I guess if you've seen some of the TOTP compilations ...
...of those old bands you used to love when you were younger. The fact is, regardless of era, regardless of musical taste & fashion, regardless of what people say - TOTP always somehow manages to survive & shuffles on regardless. Yes they've tried to look more trendier, with their so-called ultra cool star DJs, CGI animation & livelier studio acts, but at the end of the day TOTP is pants and always will be pants; it will be pants in the future as it ...

Change the Record the Needle Is Stuck

Advantages: Entertainment for the kids.
Disadvantages: It's the same week after week, equating top 10 with good music.

Hmm...I wonder why you never see any live performances on "TOTP"? Could it be that most of the acts can't actually sing? Then again, that's just my personal opinion. TOTP has been going for decades now, so they must be doing something right. Every friday night for half an hour you can watch a handful of chart toppers "perform" in the TOTP studio. Most of the acts are pop bands, commercial dance music, R&B etc, that are succesful chart entries. In ...
...decent indie, hip-hop or rock band and sometimes they even perform live! Hats off to the show, as it is known internationally and the format has been sold to many countries worldwide. Ok, Ok, it's also an evenings entertainment for anyone under the age of 15. Content is very limited, mostly top 20 entries along the lines of rival ITV show, CD:UK. The longer this show runs, the variety of music seems to become more and more limited. For example, ...

Is this how we are goiign to die?

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Do we really have to put up with the trash that is on what used to be an actually enjoyable programme, For the past several months I have watched and listened to nothing but rubbish in the charts. I have not heard a guitar for months. I sometimes wonder if the exist anymore, or if they ever did, and the whole actual music as it should be scene, was just a big hoax. I am absolutely baffled that in the past few weeks, Miss Briteny Spears, Ai The Big ...
...)Made it into the top 10. What are we going to? Go into hybernation maybe, until somone brings out something worth listening to? Seems the best option at the moment, rather than waste my Friday 7.30-8.00 slot, watching a show, just hoping something good is going to come on. Please help me in my matter of trying to change the charts. I am campaigning to change the way we see music for ever. Join me. Write to your MP ...

TOTP

Advantages: Latest songs, videos and dances
Disadvantages: /

I often watch this programme, and as an owner of only 5 channels, I find it a good way to catch up on the latest songs, dances and videos which accompany them. I don't have MTV, and so I often miss out when others are talking about the videos for certain songs. Top Of The Pops is a well structured, fun, music programme. The presenters are Jamie Theakston, Richard Blackward, and a girl, argh! What's her name (sorry!!!). The show only lasts 30 minutes, ...
...others with their videos. They do a countdown for the weeks top 30, and always have at least 6 songs performed. There are no tedius interviews with the stars, like on CDUK, simply the songs, and a quick introduction. The songs which are played are sonetimes top 10s, and sometimes new releases. People tend to like it when they play unheard of songs which they predict to do well, but they don't do this too often. The presenters are lively, the live ...

Top of the Pops

Advantages: Good Music
Disadvantages: Miming!!!!!!

Top of the Pops must be one of the oldest running music programmes still going. Its formula hasn't changed much in all that time, they show a selection of the hits of the week with a run down of the charts. There can;t be many people who don't remember atching it as children avidly waiting to find out what had made it to the number one spot and to see how long they would last there. And look at some of the famoud people who have hostd it over the ...

When is TOTP not TOTP?

Advantages: If a song's high in the charts, you're still guaranteed to hear (and see) it.
Disadvantages: The old formula was better.

Top Of the Pops reflects the biggest hits on the UK Singles Chart each week. Well, it used to. Until some point in the 1990s, there was a simple and effective formula. The first 7 or 8 songs - working down from No.1 - which climbed (or sometimes stayed in the same position) would be featured, providing they hadn't been included on the previous week's show, in addition to the Number One single of the week. There would be good weeks, bad weeks and ...
...week's "Pops". Then, due to the shifting nature of the chart itself (the high debuts followed by rapid descents) and a fall in ratings, this format was dumped. More room was given to *exclusive* performances by big-name bands and celebrities, irrespective of where in the chart their single was. Often, they did not even have (or need to have) any new hit in the shops to promote. The snaring of these high-profile acts was the important thing, the ...

Great variety and well presented

Advantages: Great variety of music (even some Meat Loaf sometimes)
Disadvantages: 'New' stuff is often boy band crap

The charts these days are a farce – bands no longer work their way to the top, if you ain’t straight in at number one, you’ve got no chance. Bands sell a pathetic amount of singles, and get a high-flyer. What’s going on? Don’t ask me, just remember when times were better… Top Of The Pops 2 is a spin-off of the famous and pretty good UK chart show Top Of The Pops. Presented by long suffering radio DJ Steve Wright, it collates a whole load of clips ...
...– spanning several decades. So – if you’re any sort of music guru or nostalgia freak, this is the show for you. With everything from Boy George to Bon Jovi, you can expect musical variety, if nothing else. To be frank, TOTP2 is excellent. It furnishes us with music from several decades (more than most radio stations can do), and the videos along with it. Great fun and great memories all the way. ...

its poptastical

Advantages: live music for no cost
Disadvantages: its hard to get there

Top of the pops! The BBC like to claim that this program is live! Not true! It is infact filmed on the thursday night and shown on the bbc on friday night as Im sure many of you will know. I was lucky ( if lucky the right word) enough to be able to get my hands on the gold dust like top of the pops tickets for this weeks show. Im sure you are wondering how much these rare tickets cost and I am glad to inform you that they are totally free! Yes free! ...
...a rather long waiting list to get the tickets. I at first did not know that I had asked for the tickets until I had found out one of my mates had requested them for me as a joke. Nice joke I thought infact I split many ribs over his joke! That is when I turned his joke round on him as when I looked on bbc teletext to find out which " artists" if you can call them that were performing. To my delight and his horror I found that Britney is on this ...

Top of the Flops

Advantages: cant think of any, sometimes a good and on there
Disadvantages: lots of miming and repeat performances

From my earliest days of watching television, one program that has followed me as I have grown up is 'Top of the pops'. Back then though (the 70's and 80's), it all seemed so exciting and real. Unfortunatly these days something has changed a little for the worse :- The presenters - Seems anyone can host the show if they can speak these days. Half of the time I have never even heard of whoever it might be, (and why is there always a crowd of uninterested ...
...gold?) The bands - Sometimes quite decent bands frequent this show more than once, but I have noticed that if the same song stays in the charts for more than a week then the same performance is broadcast the following week and every week there after.(I'll not go into our licence fee and how it is spent on this op!) The time it is shown - Once upon a time it was always on on a Thursday evening, now its on on a Friday evening.....so what u might ...

Good music?

Advantages: Most popular music of the day
Disadvantages: Mostly bad music - too much boyzone

Time and time again Top of the Pops disappoints me. I wait for it every week in anticipation of some good music, but sadly it fails me. Eminem is right, I've had enough of boy bands and teeny singers like Britney Spears. Unfortunately, TOTP does not seem to realsie that there are some people with musical taste and that we like a bit of variety. I do realise that they have to play the most popular songs, but they can mix the popular teen rubbish with ...

The Oldest, But Not The Greatest

Advantages: Shows live acts, occasionally has a satellite link-up or exclusive video
Disadvantages: No variety in way it is presented, not many exclusives, rather old-fashioned

Well, Top Of The Pops is the original pop music show, but in my opinion it is no longer the best. This is because there's no variety in the way it is presented, or the types of things they have on the show. TOTP just show loads of live acts, one after the other, then the top 20 countdown, then the number one and that's it. Occasionally, they have an exclusive of a new video or a live satellite link-up to some other country, but these are very rare. ...

When are they going to change the name?

Advantages: Good music, free to go and watch
Disadvantages: Not enough dance/trance

TOTP as it is shortened to has been around for years, playing out selected songs from the top 40 chart and the number 1. They have live bands on but they mime, which is a bit stupid, as all you are doing is lstening to a Cd and having the artist/band there? When are they going to sing live? It has been the same for years, and has still got the same name, Top of the Pops, it sounds old and dated, and is always on at 7:30 pm on Friday and is always ...
...format for years, but it works and it is good. If your at home on a Friday night watch it, (inless your a Corrie fan of course). You can get free tickets for it, at http://www.bbb.co.uk and click somewhere!, filmed at the Elmstree studios next to the Eastenders set. Watch it! ...
