Advantages Advantages Everything! Excellent characters, Excellent Script, Excellent cast, Excellent Music...Etc Etc

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing!

I am a massive fan of the sci-fi/comedy show Red Dwarf, so I thought I’d write a small (yeah ok, maybe not small) discourse on Red Dwarf, I hope you enjoy. If you have never seen Red Dwarf, firstly you don’t know what you’re missing and secondly I’ve tried to not include any spoilers. (Much) Sorry if this is too long, but I have tried to condense it as much as possible. The Genesis of Red Dwarf Red Dwarf is a Science fiction situation comedy, but has incorporated dramatic scenes into its evolution. It has ran for nearly 22 years, albeit with large gaps of several years between series’ 5, 6, 7 ... more

Advantages Advantages A quality program. Don't have to understand Space to watch it!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes its hard to grasp

THIS IS AN SOS MESSAGE FROM THE MINING SHIP RED DWARF. ALL THE CREW ARE DEAD, KILLED IN A RADIATION LEAK. THE ONLY SURVIVORS ARE DAVE LISTER WHO WAS STORED IN A STASIS BOOTH AND A LIFE FORM THAT HAS EVOLVED FROM HIS PET CAT. Anyone who is a fan of Red Dwarf will notice that the statement there at the top is the beggining of the show throughout the earlier series and so I thought would be quite appropriate to begin this Review. Now I want to straighten something out, I am NOT some sort of Space Geek who sits in his house trying to build models of the starship enterprise waiting for the next ... more

Red Dwarf. Smoke me a kipper; I'll be back for Breakfast. ~Synopsis~ = Dave Lister is stuck on Mimas and he just wants to get home to Earth, so he enlists aboard the Red Dwarf little realising it will not reach earth for another 5 years. Dave smuggles a cat aboard the ship but is found out and put into "stasis" for refusing to surrender his cat for dissection. Whilst in stasis there is a radiation leak which kills all of the remaining crew. The computer keeps Dave in stasis for 3 million years until the radiation levels are safe for him to emerge. The ships computer 'Holly' creates a hologram ... more

Advantages Advantages Very funny, subtle plots

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Much 'English' humour

Red Dwarf has become a cult series around the UK and is beginning to be appreciated in the US. The crews of Red Dwarf were all killed due to an accident. Lister, one of the lowlifes of Red Dwarf was put into suspended animation for having a cat on board the ship, and so was lucky enough to survive the accident. When he is finally released from the suspended animation he realizes that he is the only human being left alive. Lister can be described as a beer swilling, curry eating lay about who worried more about his next meal than his personal hygiene. The cat that Lister smuggled on board the ... more

Advantages Advantages Just superbly made and hilarious

Disadvantages Disadvantages You just cant buy them all now

Surely one of the BBCs finest productions. This truely is one of the true comedy greats. the belief was that Comedy and Sci-Fi were not meant to be mixed, but Red Dwarf smashed that myth into tiny pieces. Eight series later it is sitting proud. 8 series, and over 50 episodes. But the sad thing is, many or no longer available to buy. You can still purchase series 1,2 and 3, and the most recent series', 7 and 8 are in the shops, but sadly 4, 5 and 6 are not. I am afraid that means some serious searching for: The Gunmen of the Apocalypse, and more upsetting still, The Dispair Squid, know ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great comedy

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Chloe Annett

Dave Lister ... the last human being alive ... he who would inherit the universe is a Scouser with dreadlocks and an infatuation with chicken vindaloo ... somehow it all seems so fitting. And for the man who has nothing ... a hologram of Arnold Rimmer, the most despicable presence known to man. Stir in the vainest cat in the world, a couple of talking computers and a robotic butler with a lovely cuboid head and you've got Red Dwarf, one of the longest running and most addictive comedy series ever to see the light of day. Smeggin' Hell, gimboid, this is bloody fundamental stuff and if you've ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great Cast

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Absolutely None

What can I say, Red Dwarf is one of my all time favourite British Comedies. I have been a fan of Red Dwarf for many many years. I have even got to meet the entire cast :) OVERVIEW Red Dwarf is about a Mining Ship full of humans in space. The two main characters are - Second Technician Arnold J Rimmer (Chris Barrie) and Third Technician (or Slob) Dave Lister (Craig Charles). Rimmer is a careers man, he's determined to do well in his job and make his way up to the top. But Lister on the other hand is a slob, a space bum. One day in space Lister is sent in to Stasis (suspended animation) for ... more

    Advantages Advantages Very funny

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bring back the old style!

Red dwarf always used to be the highlight of my friday nights! The pure comedy of it all made me buy both the mess up videos, and half of the series on tape. The pure wit of lister, to the way rimmer trys to act clever, but isnt! I really hope the BBC decide to run another series or 2 because it really is a great program... I liked the idea of the old holly coming back last series, but i hated the way that they were all back on the ship with all the old crew. it completly ruined the Fact that hey were 4 Bums alone in outer space. If they do decide to do another few episodes, then i would ... more

Advantages Advantages A great, innovative comedy

Disadvantages Disadvantages A victim of its own success

Gone to silicon heaven....... Ah yes, Red Dwarf, I remember the days of the first series, low budget, low fi and hi comedy. This program took off out of the blue and made the Grant Naylor duo a household name at a rate even they could not have dreamed of. At the end of the day, though, I think it became the victim of its own success. Series two and three were an improvement on the first, as the program makers had a vastly increased budget to explore some of the more crazy ideas dreamed up by the program's creators. Because demand for the program was so high, later series were paid for and were ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good setting

Disadvantages Disadvantages Immature jokes, very childish

Red Dwarf is a show that is loved by a lot of people. It has had 8 seasons now, and all have been shown on BBC. However, I think that this show is one of the worst 'comedies' that the BBC has ever made. I think that the style of humour within the show is neither appropriate nor funny. It makes the show very boring and childlike, and if the BBC do another few series of the show, I think that it will leave them far behind in the rankings, with shows such as Frasier and Friends leading the field in excellence. Although sometimes the plots are good, the show is just too strange and the jokes are ... more
