    Advantages Advantages Footy and film

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Mindless sports talk

Radio Five Live are particular tedious with their football coverage, the need to fill their half hour updates seemingly the problem, nothing worse than the same mindless football quotes we get repeated from people like Arsen Wenger and Alex Ferguson all day on the hour. The BBC should be populist but its remit is also about being an alternative to the main stream media. It has to judge when we have had enough and stop leaching of other news networks to keep the story going to save money so not fill the bulletins with interesting sports news. As that Northants cricket fan that approach really ... more

Advantages Advantages Probably the best news and sports station in the UK

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some programmes are boring

WRITTEN December 2009 INTRODUCTION I wrote about BBC Radio Five Live in my previous incarnation on Ciao as mrpaella. I still listen to the station every day. Usually my wife watches a plethora of Indian channels on the living room TV. I usually listen to the station broadcast from the alarm clock radio in our bedroom. It is still the best station for sport and current affairs. I don't know if our Karen ever listens to Radio Five Live? THE BREAKFAST SHOW This is hosted by Nicky Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty. I hardly ever listen to the programme. When I do, I am usually half-asleep and don't ... more

Advantages Advantages Generally good , some good presenters

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Repetitive

Travelling for long distances the road through the day the radio is an invaluable way of getting entertainment, news and information. Radio 5 is an all news and sport channel so can be an invaluable way of getting the news and information during the day. Whether it is entertaining or not is another matter. One thing that must be remembered about radio compared with the majority of the output on television is that radio is almost entirely live. The opportunity to edit is therefore limited. Sometimes the potential value of being a live broadcast is misused. Major incidents tend to have huge ... more

Advantages Advantages up to the minute news and fantastic for Sport

Disadvantages Disadvantages nothing, well except they have no comedy programmes

If you can't afford to keep up with the never ending cost of Sky and Cable TV - but still want to keep in touch with the World of Sports, there's only one option - Five Live. I know that when kids of my age are glued to the radio listening to all kinds of music (that's fine - but not ALL the time), I'd prefer to tune into Radio Five. Every half hour after the new bulletins there is up to date Sports news. But some of the Talk programmes often feature interesting, thought provoking stuff, ideal for all ages. I suppose most people think that Radio 4 and Radio 5 are dull, but thats far from the ... more

Advantages Advantages Comprehensive news and sports coverage

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some late night programmes are boring

Although BBC Radio 5 Live was only formed in the early 1990s it has already become the UK’s leading radio station for news and sport. In fact it has a good reputation worldwide. Radio 5 Live provides unrivalled sports coverage. There are sports reports every 30 minutes. Any breaking sports stories are covered between these sports bulletins. Most of the sports journalism is of the highest standard. Before the advent of Radio 5 Live I used to listen to sports reports on BBC Radio 2. When I was at school during the 1970s I used to spend evenings listening to football commentary by the late ... more

    Advantages Advantages Everything.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

What can i say about what is simply the best radio station in the world. Radio five live carries upto the minute live news from around the world. Its sport coverage is second to none, especially the football coverage. It covers more live matches evry year than sky TV, On digital, and all the terrestial stations put together. Whats more, the commentators make it so lively, and the descriptions of the matches so good, it is more exciting than watching it TV. There is all the latest in travel news, weathwer news, and Victoria Derbyshire has got the sexiest voice on radio! What more could you want ... more

    Advantages Advantages Informed and diverse

Disadvantages Disadvantages Somewhat pedestrian in the mornings

There are many types of Radio 5 Live listener. Some tune in for the football, others for the news. Many listen in during the drive home, others as they eat their toast and cornflakes. This represents the two key assets of Radio 5; it appeals to a wide and diverse audience and it is within itself a very broad church. Mornings on Radio 5 are a comfortable middle ground between Radio 4's stuffiness and the tabloid-esque chuff chuffery of the little missed Talk Radio. News in depth but with a hearty helping of comment and light heartedness. Mid-mornings are the domain of Nikki Campbell and some ... more

Advantages Advantages Interesting debates, Good sports coverage

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can become repetitive repetitive, oh i already said that!!

As a student, I cannot afford to have Sky or Cable television in my flat, and with only the main four terrestrial television stations at my disposal, it is clear that a new form of entertainment would become necessary. Thankfully, when searching through the radio for something different, I came across Radio 5 Live. Radio 5 Live is on 693 Medium wave, and I should state first that it may not be to all people's taste. They do not play music, instead preferring to debate the issues of the day, some serious, some less so, with various guests. The presenters of the different shows are very good at ... more

Advantages Advantages great presenters, lively, chatty and informed

Disadvantages Disadvantages TV should be like this

My radio dial is never far from Radio Five. The mix of news, sport and educated, informed and witty presenters is right up my street. From the Breakfast Show in the morning, through to Nicky Campbell's phone in. Then the afternoon show with Ian Payne - light, chatty and cheery and onto The Drive Time Show. Sourpuss Peter Allen is now reunited with Jane Garvey and the two make a great team. Allen is the news man - the ex political correspondent who, in his 50s has a wealth of experience and comes over all fatherly and supportive, but also has the air of the grumpy old uncle. The evening is ... more

    Advantages Advantages quality

    Disadvantages Disadvantages too conservative

This is a very good news and sport radio station, especially if your driving quite a lot in the morning and in the afternoon. I like the format of the radio stations and the way they have a good balance from sport and daily news issues. Although, they are conservative in their views as exemplified by Edwina Curry, they do have people from both sides and therefore there’s a good basis for a good, honest heated debate. And that is what I think makes good debates. They are in their own league when it comes to sports, and with the rights for most of the top sport with the exception of the ... more
