Advantages Advantages Great handling fun to drive well made quite economical

Disadvantages Disadvantages Run-flat tyres poor standard sound from stereo not that spacious

My BMW 118d is my third 1 Series after having owned a Pre-Facelift 116i and 120d. The Facelift 118d comes with a new 2 litre diesel engine with an output of 143 Bhp compared to the 122 Bhp of the pre facelift 118d. Other changes on the facelift model include stop/start, brake energy regeneration as part of the efficient dynamics setup. Also new rear light clusters a DPF (diesel particle filter) as standard and straight exhaust as standard slightly smoked front headlamps and on SE models and below new front and rear bumpers. The interior has also been give a much need update in terms of quality ... more

Advantages Advantages Solid build, good performance, great drive

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost

I had the good fortune to have this car for a week as a courtesy car and I was impressed! Didnt want to give it back in the end! I have always liked the look of the 1 series as it is quite different to any of the other hatchbacks. I was given a brand new 2008 118dSE Automatic in Silver. I believe with the extras this retails at around £20'000-22'000. The standard features were 5 doors, cd player, driver and passenger airbags, electric windows (front and rear), remote central locking and boot pop. The car also featured optional extras including air conditioning, 17" alloy wheels, automatic ... more

Advantages Advantages Great drive, fine balanced car

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rear space poor and rear doors restrict access

Bought one for my wife, but ended up driving it. Preconcieved ideas about what it looked like and how it drove meant that I hated it before I had even sat in it. Huge suprise when I did eventually drive as it really is good to drive. Exceptionally well balanced, feel much bigger and the engine is suprisingly reponsive. However, if space is a premium (ie you have one or more young chidren), then you MUST look elsewhere as it has minimal space in the back and the space of the rear doors make putting children in car seats almost impossible - a real fault in the car design. Add to this a small ... more

Advantages Advantages Low road tax, lovely drive, comfortable, surprisingly spacious

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not cheap!

BMW 118d SE or ES (can't recall which!). I love my new BMW. I am new to the brand, only purchased mine a few months ago. But I am very happy with it, and am trying to persuade my partner to buy one too. What a change to drive a quality car! My main reason for buying it was its green credentials, with the car tax at only £35. Its not the money as much as the principle behind it (ie. if the government sees fit to charge low tax, then it must be an efficient car with low emissions). I love the start-stop feature, where the engine cuts out when stopped at traffic lights. I was a bit dubious of ... more

Advantages Advantages Good, solid feeling car, handsome styling

Disadvantages Disadvantages Autostop/start very noisy, poor level of spec, expensive for what it is

I had a 1-series BMW for a fortnight as a courtesy car from Avis via my insurance company when my Focus Ghia was in for repair and was delighted when I heard I'd be getting a BMW, and even more impressed to find it was an M Sport model. I previously drove an Audi A4 and found it to be of a similar quality to the BMW - good, solid controls felt chunky and robust and the driving position, when I finally achieved the desired position, was very good. However, "finally" is the key here, because the -manual- seat adjustment controls aren't exactly intuitive - first gripe, but a minor one. I'd been ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful drive with great fuel economy, very stylish.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very difficult to keep clean!

It was a job to decide whether to go for the 118d SE or Sport but in the end I plumped for the multi-function steering wheel rather than the sporty seats. In fact it's a really sporty steering wheel and suits such a stylish car. Other great features include the programmable remote key - so each driver can store their own information, and the oh-so-groovy-but-are-they-really-neccessary 'puddle lights' that light up your door handles in the dark. I have rear parking sensors and am now confident about the amount of space left when the beep goes continuous. As a shorter person, I can get a really ... more

5 Stars Quick review of BMW 118d SE by northants_tom 07/01/2009
I've owned this car since May 2008 and have had a number of experiences to fully test it's mettle. It is fantastically good on summer roads and as much fun as a go-kart. In the wet, like any rear wheel drive it does become a little too responsive. I have also suffered a large accident in a BMW 1 series, when I was hit twice. Despite my whiplash, the car was as strong as I could wish for and withstood the impact of two large vehicles which were written off. It was quickly repaired by BMW, who's service was top quality. ... more

Advantages Advantages a real drivers car

Disadvantages Disadvantages pricey but worth it

I've had my BMW 118ES for a few weeks now. Although not technically an SE it has a few extras that make it pretty close. I love it - it drives beautifully and the boot is big enough to fit 3 dogs! I have read comments that the rear seats do not have much room but, as I don't have children and rarely carry passengers, this is not a problem. Those passengers that I have carried have not complained though to be fair! At present I am getting 49.5mpg on my daily run to work (approx 15 miles with some town/some country roads). One feature that takes a bit of getting used to is the auto cut out when ... more

I bought the 118d because of the positive reviews and green features. The MPG isn't bad but don't believe a word of the 60.1. Even driving like I am on my driving test the best I have managed is 51. I challenged BMW and I received a corporate response along the lines of '60.1 was achieved in test conditions blah blah blah' If I throw caution to the wind and am happy to settle for 48 mpg the 1 series is a great drive. Boot space is adequate and overall comfort is great. Overall not a bad motor, I just wish ... more
