Advantages: good if you are going to be a heavy user Disadvantages: NOT FREE
BTs internet based sister company Genie are running what would appear to be a fantastic promotion at the moment. A free sim card with unlimited free WAP calls and unlimited SMS messages on their pay-as-you-go tariff. Sounds too good to be true! Well, it is!
I received an email telling me about this offer and thought "what an amazing idea!" and so promptly applied. The application process on the web site (www.genie.co.uk) was simple and quick and ... ...was free no financial details were required.
The sim card arrived two days later and I was kept informed of the process, from ordering, through dispatch to delivery by email. Very impressive.
I inserted the sim card into the new handset and it registered as being on the BT Cellnet service! Great... now a test. I tried to send a short SMS to my husband's phone. I waited and waited and after about three minutes the phone came up with a message that ...

Advantages: can be cheap if you only use your inclusive minutes Disadvantages: can end up being tied into a situation and you can fall foul of BTs policy of overpricing
The tao of Claire must be "if you find something you want you can always get it cheaper!" and so began my quest for a mobile phone. In a very "anorak-ish" kind of way my boyfriend (now my husband) and I spent a very long and boring Saturday constructing an Excel spreadsheet into which we plugged a plethora of information regarding mobile phone tariffs in a vain attempt to establish which mobile phone tariff would be best for us at the time. I do ... ...side as attempting to quantify "three months free", "50 mins free minutes anytime", "500 free off-peak minutes", "£5.00 free calls" and "£100 cash-back" into meaningful spreadsheet figures was a nightmare! In the end (and it was a close run thing) we scientifically (!) determined that the BT Cellnet Pay in Advance package was the one for us.
Off we went to the BT Cellnet shop (two in fact) and duly purchased a phone each. Credit, where credit is ...

...I have since changed to BTCellnet for cheaper call rates. Currently the cheapest and best value pay as you network to be on is BTCellnet, however is customer service compromised as a result of cheaper call rates? Well read on and you’ll find out…
Call charges ~~
But first I’ll give you all the basic stuff on call charges:
PEAK RATES (Per minute) Landline ~~~ 25p
BTCellnet mobile ~~~ 10p
Other network ~~~ 50p
WEEKEND (Per ... ...minute)
Landline ~~~ 10p
BTCellnet mobile ~~~ 10p
Other network ~~~ 25p
Voicemail ~~~ 10p per minute at all times
Text (SMS) ~~~ 10 per text at all times
Customer service ~~
Customer service is not brilliant on BTCellnet; last time I called I was left on hold for 18 minutes. 5-10 minutes is acceptable but 18 minutes is absolutely ridiculous. However BTCellnet redeemed themselves when I was finally put through to a real voice the problem was ...

Advantages: Good coverage, pay upfront is good value, network is keen to retain existing customers Disadvantages: Inept customer service, exorbitant charges for calls to other mobile networks
If you are thinking of changing your mobile, perhaps even changing your network, don't just cancel your old contract and go for whatever appeals in your local phone shop. You could be throwing your money away...
By all means do your research and find out which handset you want next. Feel free to have an in-store prod & poke, ask your mates, check out the opinions on Ciao. But if you've had a pay-monthly contract with Cellnet for more than a year, ... ...WITHOUT calling the network and asking to cancel first. Even if you have no intention of actually doing so, the threat of cancellation works wonders.
Having operated an Ericsson T10s for almost two years on a pay-monthly basis, and become all but joined at the hip to my Palm V over the same period, I was thoroughly fed up with two things; firstly, the random way in which the T10s would switch itself off, and secondly, having to carry around two ...

I feel as though I’ve been with BT Cellnet since our good Scottish friend, Sandy Graham Bell, cranked his handle, spoke to his mother in the next room , and said “Fit like, Ma? Can ye hear me? I’ve invented a telly-phone!”
Old Ma Bell didn’t actually answer, because she was deaf as a post.
And BT Cellnet have valiantly kept up this tradition – of being deaf as a post.
I don’t do basic facts, as you know. ... ...overdone the Glen Ord, the tales have a point.
So here is the tale.
I have four phones on one account with BT Cellnet. These are (mostly) for business use. My own, and three in works vehicles. And believe me, they are worth their weight in gold when some decrepit old Transit breaks down miles from nowhere. Or when my foreman needs advice to deal with a stroppy client.
Sorry, delete that last sentence. There is no such thing as a stroppy client. ...

Are you unsure which pre-pay tariff to go for?
Are you baffled by all the different tariffs and prices of different telephone calls?
Or how good the coverage is of the different networks?
Then please read this opinion before making your choice.
I personally chose BT Cellnet - Pay as you go, as it has a very good service coverage which I think it has one of the best, and I am sure that you won’t find cheaper talk time.

I bought my mobile phone last november, after much research I opted for cellnet's Line advance package. This basically cost me £99.99 for one years line rental, connection to what is now the Talk 50 tarriff and a nice little panasonic phone. I opted for cellnet due to the fact that we were going to rural north wales for the new year and wanted a phone that would actually work if we should breakdown on the way. I have had no problems what so ever ... ...even half way up Mount Snowden!! When I first signed up the Talk 50 was actually a package that gave you £5 worth of calls a month, this was soon change to the 50 minutes worth of calls. I did notice once it was changed over that Text messages, were not included in my free allowance. One month I used about 10 minutes of calls but still got charged 10p for the 2 text messages, I'd made even though I still had loads of credit left for that month. One ...

Last christmas I recieved a BT Cellnet mobile phone. I'm not a heavy user of phones in general but it's nice to have one just in case especially as it doesn't break the bank. Now I'm not one for really caring about the latest mobile phone sizes, ringtones and logos. I just wanted a phone that could make and recieve calls so what I have is a very basic Phillips model. Now for the past nine months I've been using the phone. I bought £15 worth of credit ... ...I'm now down to £3.50, that should give you an idea of how much I use the phone. My experience of the network in general is quite good. Call rates are reasonable enought. Of course the rate with most networks for calling another mobile at peak times is always pricey. Advantages: Cheep call charges Disadvantages: They can change your pricing plan at any time
Hi all I just though I would write and tell you all about my experience of BT cell net and their Pre-pay packages. I bought my mobile phone 2 years ago now, on one of the packages where you pay your line rental in advance and therefore only get charged for the calls you make. This made sense to me as I was just about to go back to university after a year out, and thought that if I paid for my line rental in advance I wouldn’t have to worry ... ...So I duly went down to the link and purchased a Pay in advance Nokia 5110, (a good phone, if a little dated now). I was told that there was a special deal on at that time that allowed me to get 15 months line rental for the price of 12. That coupled with the £5 of free calls a month sealed the deal for me. So I parted with my £130 and took the phone home. I was happy as Larry with my new purchase, all went well and good, then came the renewal. I ...

High-profile marketing strategies and special offers to increase customer base. That was BT Cellnet's aim for 2001. True, the calls have been cheaper, the phone is lovely and much nicer than my old PAYG model, but I just seem to be continually disappointed with the service. That's not to say it's bad - it's just too average. I feel that now I am a customer their job has been done and ...

I have tried pay & go, both Orange and Vodafone but, when my existing mobile was stolen at New Year (yes, I know, what idiot takes a mobile out at New Year?) I discovered that, far from being the economical option it used to be several years ago, pay & go was now a relatively expensive option for all but the most infrequent user operating a basic handset! However, being me (and therefore requiring to check that it is absolutely the best bargain) I shopped around a little more and found the same deal from mobileshop.com at only £65 including all accessories. Bargain! But was this as good a deal as I thought? 15 months ...

We have just been trying to sort out a problem with BT Cellnet after I suddenly found my phone had been barred for outgoing calls for the second time in two weeks.

When we eventually got through, the attitude and helpfulness rating was nil or less. ...

Hubby got a posh new WAP phone and I have to admit I was jealous. I had wanted a mobile for ages and had to reluctantly admit Hubby was right when he said I didn’t really need one and the fact that I was at home most of the time kind of confirmed it, but EVERYONE I knew had one; I NEEDED one! Its BT Cellnets latest "offer", free wap internet access for the whole of June. Marvellous you may think So did I until a few days into June.

After 6 days free and easy access, I found a few problems, which have now escalated into huge problems. Basically, connection to the server is very slow. Advantages: Leaders in the WAP industry. Disadvantages: Quite a few, but not all easy to see.
Having recently written about the Virgin mobile network, I was asked by way of a comment " what is the call cost from a land line to the network", and in fact to any network with BT Cellnet suggested as the cheapest.
In answer to the question, I have to say I do not know. But having said that, 3 of my household use a Vodafone connection which means that we call each others mobiles quite frequently from the house phone. To date I can't remember seeing ... ...I think it's 10p per minute. I'm probably right, as only calls over 40p are listed in the itemised section, and most of the time there is only a few showing. As an estimate, home to mobile calls are usually 3 - 5 minutes long on average, and if my recollection is correct, it would match the billing very well.
Anyway, I hope that helped. Now on to Cellnet itself.
Being a BT service, I have to say that Cellnet is likely to be amongst the cheapest ...
