Advantages: Cheap calls priced per minute, no cut-off time, reputable company, choice of packages Disadvantages: May prove expensive for heavy internet users
...name, BT. I quite like BT and have always had good service from them in the form of both my home and mobile phone lines. So, I headed for the website, BTinternet. My immediate impression was not great. The site had a bit of a cluttered look to it, and the text was, I felt, a bit too small for comfortable reading. But, in the middle of the page I saw what I was looking for, a choice of services offered. SurfTime, Credit Card, and Pay-as you-go. (Also ... ...from Freeserve and clicked the BT icon on my desktop. This set up my BTinternet dial-up, and produced another icon and some text to read. I just wanted to get going so I clicked my new icon and...nothing. Tried again and...nothing.
I decided perhaps I should have read the text afterall, so after digging it out from the recycle bin (I can't stand having a cluttered desktop), I read it. Realising that although I had downloaded the software, I hadn't ...

...have been a member of BT internet from the day they launched their subscription charge service at £9.99, paid on the credit card, and giving you free access to the internet between 6pm and 12 midnight, daily and also weekends. This service did not however, include bank holidays, which I always assumed were rated the same as evenings and weekends by the company. Shortly after BT launched this service, NTL launched their totally free internet service, and I thought yes...... I can save some money, so enrolled and waited (4½ months in fact - see my separate opinion on NTL) for my disc.
In the interim I started to get interested in website development, and loaded up a home page etc etc through btinternet. At first, visitors were slow, but thanks to BT's details on customers homepages, traffic ...

...new service provider. We found BT Internet.
BT Internet was probably the cheapest server that we could find because the calls are less than the price of a local call if the line you are using is a BT line. We started with BT pay-as-you-go. This service allowed us to pay for the call charges as we go by receiving monthly bills and pay for them using a debit card.
Later on we discovered by looking at the phone bill that I was online much too much ... ...range of different services that BT can provide.
BT has a long list of different services that appeal to our needs. There is always pay-as-you-go if you are hardly ever online but still need the Internet for something like information every now and then. I discovered that there are far better services though by getting a BT surf time package. The cheapest surf time package costs £5.99 per month. This doesn’t include line rental but it means ...

It seemed this product was made for me! I use the net a lot in the evenings (after 6pm) and at the weekends. Coincidentally, this is when internet access is 'free'. Pay 9.99 a month, and go on the net at those times for as long as you like. That's over 300 potential hours of surfing you can have. It was very easy to get this service, a quick download of the appropriate software, sign up, and twenty minutes later you can be using the service. There ... ...before 6pm (although it seems to cost nearly 4p per-minute!) which is useful if you just want to download some e-mails or something quick.
The e-mail service seems fine, easy access through Outlook Express, or good and easy access online. Just going to btinternet.com and signing in allows you access to e-mails wherever you are, and they can be downloaded at home afterwards also. There is also the option of having a text message sent to your phone ...

Advantages: Good availability, speed. Free access for 15 quid a month Disadvantages: Useless dialer software, easy to get wrong, cannot use from cable phone lines, can only use from one phone line
I have been a BT Internet customer for approaching 2 years.
Initially it was a decent service, you use it, you pay.
Then they introduced Free Evening and weekend calls, service levels were slaughtered as usernames and passwords were handed out on the net - BT had no way of avoiding duplicate connections from different phone lines.
Now they offer free calls 24 hours a day. They have made an investment in increasing their capacity but as their product ... ...you HAD to use their BT dialer to connect or you would be charged for calls to the 0800 number.
The dialer served only to lock up your machine and use 100% of available processor power until connected. All so they could guarantee that the first page you looked at was their homepage.
Now it is free access 24/7, it has got worse. Still have to use their dialer but you now can only use the free service from a BT line AND you can only use it from one ...

...new house, and called upon BT to set me up with a line. We opted for the phone and broadband package, as it seemed quite neat and BT of course is a name you can trust...Yeah !!!
Anyway...to start from the beginning, we contacted BT who informed us that an engineer would be out in about 2 weeks on a specified day, sometime between 8.00 - 13.99 to install and set up our line. I keen to get my phone and broadband on line, booked the specified day off ... ...and went. I rang BT again, 20 mins this time, I was informed that apparantly its done, so they did a line test and it was fine, however nothing was happening at my end, another line test, nothing, but their records were fine. I asked why he had not come to the house to check the line, and was advised that in new houses, there was no need as they can be connected from the central junction box (They tell me this when I have had 2 days off waiting....I ...

...decided to change completly to BT (Phone line and BT Internet On surftime) after NTL just stopped my (free) internet access suddenly and everytime I phoned them said that they couldn't tell me why and that I would have to ring their (£1 per minute!) helpline.Even after doing this and clocking up an extra £15 on my phone bill they couldn't help me.
I thought that things would be a lot different with Bt and yes the majority of the time things have ... ...bit!!
I haven't actually called Bt yet to complain as I'd had enough of going through this time and time again with NTL but at the same time I know that it would do me no good anyway as I've been onto the Bt newsgroups and found on their announce newsgroup that their server is regularly down!
Coupled with this I've read message after message on their discussion newsgroup complaining about the poor service in the same way that I have.
I have read ...

With BT changing there internet packages very soon I have decided to change from BT credit card to Surf time, for £5.99 you get the Surf time package. This allows you to serve the net at off peak times that is 6pm to 8am on weekdays all weekend to 8am on Monday. However, you are also charged £4.00 for ISP so it works out the same as before. But, what I can’t figure out why bother changing it I was more than happy with the arrangement before ... ...will charge you £14.99 for BT anytime which allows you 24/7 access even if you haven’t downloaded the dial up box. If you require help like I did ring 150 and they will give you a free internet help number. Advantages: Email Service adequate Disadvantages: Very poor Web Server capacity
If so, then sign up for BTInternet. I have been a Surftime user since last December, and can only advise anyone considering signing up - don't do it!
The biggest problem is connecting to the Internet. Sometimes you can connect easily at a slack time, like early Sunday morning. But try connecting at peak periods like weekday evenings. It can take several attempts. Verification of username and password often causes the DUN to hang. When you do eventually ... ...timing out is often the end result, which brings you back to the dialling problem once more. One evening recently, I was unable to connect at all, on BTInternet. On switching to another ISP, (NTL) I was connected straight away.
However the e-mail server, although rather slow, seems to work the best. So far I have not had a problem receiving or sending e-mail, other than the connection problems mentioned above.
Technical support costs 50p/min, and ...

Disappointing to see that the default 'mode' for the change is the 24/7 access at £14.99 - Personally I'd rather have to opt-in, not opt-out, but for me, after a few minutes online, I have the same great service at a good price.

Advantages: Unmetered off-peak ineternet use for a £9.99 monthly fee Disadvantages: Poor customer service
I first joined BTinternet about 5 months ago to take advantage of unmetered off-peak internet access. As the service will not be available to non-BT line customers from April, I decided to cancel my subscription.
I sent an e-mail to BTinternet with my cancellation request about two weeks before my monthly subscription payment was due - no reply. Another e-mail 5 days before the due date - no reply. ...with this one. I joined BT internet a while back now mainly because my dad was having a fit at the size of the phone bill with the regular pay local call rates ISP. BT charge a monthly fee of 9.99 and this gives you access for free after 6pm till 12pm in the week and all weekend. Advantages: The cost Disadvantages: Reliability, small print
I've been using BT Internet to get on the net for the last three or four months and it's been quite reliable and the charges aren't too bad, but beware!!!
If you don't watch what you're doing you could pay a heavy price early on. The service costs £9.99 per month (as long as you've got a credit card) and you get free surfing from 6-12 on weekday evenings and all weekend, which is pretty damn good and as long as you can last the pace well worth the ... ...I suppose. Still, that's BT for you!
If you can put up with all the hassle, though, I think this is a pretty good deal, although I'm likely to swap across to Freeserve, who apparently give you free calls all the time for the same £9.99 per month.
Have a nice day, y'all! ...
