Ah summer, it's just around the corner. Which corner? I couldn't rightly say. But since I'm not a meteorologist, I don't have to. What I is, is a beer drinker and, dare I say it, a connos...hmm, I can dare to say it - not so sure I can spell it though. Me like beer con mucho gusto. Right, never mind that. Today I'm reviewing a beer I first drank last summer and never got around to properly documenting. Well, it's nearly summer now, so let's see what all the fuss was about, shall we? Golden Champion Ale is produced at the Badger Brewery (founded in 1777) in Blandford St Mary, Dorset by Hall & ... more

Advantages Advantages Refreshing, summery and tasty.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not everyone will like the elderflower taste.

In the second of my series of opinions about beers for the summer I am turning to a bottled ale. This beer is produced by the Badger Brewery, owned by Hall and Woodhouse. It was originally produced for Tesco, as part of their 1998 Beer Challenge to find a perfect summer beer, and it was declared the winner – it was classed as the ideal summer brew! It has since been a firm favourite amongst the supermarkets where it is sold (and from those who buy it direct from the Badger Brewery). What is this creation? Golden Champion Ale of course! I won’t repeat the brewery information I gave in my ... more

Beer is one of life's essentials. Well it is to me anyway; along with shepherd's pie, tea and spring and summertime in the countryside. Have you noticed how wondrous the blossom has been this year? My part of Kent has been positively enriched by some beautiful cherries amongst others of late which looks like it could be marvellous summer. Think of those long summer evenings sitting outside enjoying good company and just watching the sun slide below the horizon, the scents of the twighlight wafting around you, those final golden rays given extra magnificence reflected in the moist sparkle of ... more

Advantages Advantages A premium strong ale with a light flowery flavour

Disadvantages Disadvantages You might have to look for it

I found this beer in a promotion at the local supermarket. My curiosity was aroused by the bye line on the label ‘distinguished by its subtle elderflower aroma, reminiscent of a summer’s evening.’ Here is a brew that magically conjures images of sunny evenings, lazy country lanes and the rural quiet of yesteryear. You can almost hear the bees busily buzzing over the lavender beds on the far side of the garden, the sounds of the cattle and sheep in yonder field, the distant peal of the church bells across the meadow. You could almost see Miss Marple slowly pedalling her bicycle ….. Sorry, I ... more

Advantages Advantages a great summer beer, light and tasty

Disadvantages Disadvantages difficult to find in pubs (in london anyway)

I first drank badger beer on a holiday in Dorset, and shortly afterwards started seeing it in supermarkets. It might have been there before but i hadn't noticed it. It's (according to the label) award winning, and I can see why. It has a light fruity taste, something to do with the elderflower aroma, and by golly it works. I have drunk it chilled or room temperature and to be honest it works both ways, although the brewer recommends chilling. Living in London, Badger is not something I see a lot of in pubs, although they must sell it somewhere. So it's to the supermarket I travel to, to ... more

Advantages Advantages Light, Bright summer Drink!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too flowery for me personally

My Score: 4/10 (To see the relevance of 'my score' see my bottom paragraph. This is the same in every Beer review I am writing so if you've read it before you don't need to bother!) Unfortunately this one was too flowery for me. Its not the best aspect of a beer to me. If you like those flower notes then i guess you will love this beer. As you open it (i drank 500ml bottle) it hits you straight away! Apart from this i quite enjoyed it, it is light and refreshing and i can see why it has a large fan base! The Badger brewery have a lot to offer, I drank 7 of theirs in 2006 (Champion, Original ... more

Advantages Advantages Fantastic aroma and a great after taste.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not seen often enough.

If you like your bitter light and hoppy then you can't go wrong. Just pouring this beauty into the glass is an experience, the subtle aroma of elderflower surrounds you. Pours to a lovel golden colour - for God's sake not too cold - you always get a lovely head. Sip then think. The aroma and then that fantastic, although not overpowering, elderflower taste. A beer to be dwelt on, not guzzled. If you can get it out of the cask all the better I travel into Charing Cross to drink this beer from zone 2 to drink this beer in a pub. Try it, you'll love it. If you get hooked on the elder flowers in ... more
