I originally looked around at great length prior to the birth and found the bambino mio range to be the best. I liked the mio soft cover as it is cotton like on the outside and waterproof on the inside. It also had some nice patterns on it! Prefold nappies are lots of layers of cotton (4 on the edges, 6-8 in the centre) made into a rectangle shape, that you then just fold into a pad, sanitary towel type shape, and then put the wrap around it - like a big pair of knickers that do up with velcro at the front.
