Advantages Advantages Easy to set up

Disadvantages Disadvantages Telephone only, hidden charges, you name it!

OK, well just about everyone on here is probably sick of my whinging about the entire UK being afflicted with poor customer service disease, but hey, when organisations keep giving me such easy targets, its hard to resist! Today's target is the Bank of Scotland business current bank account. There are several reasons for their being targetted, but I think they can all be summed up in two ways, misleading advertising and poor customer service. I'll attempt to tackle each issue in detail: WHAT IS THE PRODUCT? --------------------- Well, all businesses need somewhere to store their hard earned ... more

Advantages Advantages Biggest overdraft, branches are plentiful, great service

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't think of any!

I'm a student and chose the Bank of Scotland mainly because they offered the largest interest free overdraft - In my first year I didn't need this, but I'm thankful that I took it as its proved very handy this year (2nd year) I originally wanted to go with Lloyds - but they said I couldn't bank with them because no member of my family banked with them (great business model) - I hope they go bust now. But them I'm glad they did, because I got to go with Bank of Scotland! Online banking is a breeze - I have two credit cards with the Bank of Scotland, and everything it managed from the one portal ... more

Advantages Advantages Debit Card (nice colour!)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Late notice of charges, false advertising, poor service

I opened an account with The Bank Of Scotland in June last year. They gave me a lovely camp cash card with a Solo facility, and a cheque book. Everything seemed fine.... for two weeks. I recieved a letter from UGC cinemas regarding a direct debit for their cinema subscription... it had been cancelled. But why? There were sufficient funds in my account and I didn't ask for it to be cancelled. That was black mark number one. A few weeks later I wrote a friend a cheque for some money I owed him. Now, i fully accept that when I wrote this cheque there was not enough funds to cover it. But cheques ... more

I can honestly say that I have never been so badly treated by any bank as I was with thr Bank of Scotland. I had been a loyal customer since I was about 5 so when I went to University I assumed I would get a student accout with them. I waited untill I had turned 18 before applying for one as I thought that it woul be a bit pointless before then as I already had a cheque account with them and i wouldn't be able to take advantage of a switch card or an overdraft untill then anyway. So, my 18th Birthday came around and after much drinking (my first time in a pub honest!) I went along to the bank ... more

    Advantages Advantages Lower APR, online

Disadvantages Disadvantages Any APR is a disadvantage

I have recently taken a personal loan with HBoS and I was offered the Preference Account. At first I did not accept, but after getting annoyed at my credit card company (Capital One) I have decided to use it in favour of the credit card. The interest rate on the preference account is 28.9% oppose to my credit card is above 30%. Re: Martin Rowley 's review: http://www.ciao.co.uk/BankofScotlandAccountsReview5067338 Mor e specifically to Martin Rowley's reply - this is not the bank's fault. You are made aware of the interest rates when you apply, if you go a head and use a large chunk/all of the ... more

The express account with the bank of Scotland is a very good account for children/teens of the age 11-16. When you first join you get a free gift which you can chose yourself from an electronic organiser, a personal mini radio or fact file. Also every three months you get a statement and a magazine which you also get special discount offers with. Each member gets a bank card so that he or she can withdraw money from any cash machine without going into the bank. Also the card is a solo card so the member doesn'y have to take out money for things they can just pay with their card and the good ... more

Its been some time since I was a Bank of Scotland customer and I speak here through my own experience and nothing else. They left and continue to leave a level of distaste in my mouth so bad that no matter what offer, interest rate or great gimmick or offer they have on, even if theres was one of a kind and I really really needed it, I wouldnt go near them. I was originally a Halifax Supersaver. My first bank account and I got my supersaver squirrel and my yellow halifax house bank. This account was opened by my parents when I was about 4 years old and despite only puting a few pounds in ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not enough stores accept cards

I think the Bank of Scotland is great. I am only 15 and I have a Solo which is kind of like a Switch card but its for teenagers and i can't overdraw money. It can be used in a wide range of shops but the only problem is some shops don't accept it and other shops don't believe that it's your own card. I personally haven't had any trouble but a few of my friends have and it was really embarassing situations. There are lots of oher accounts for students which are also very good and for people going to university the student loans are quite good too. ... more

I have had a preference account with Bank of Scotland almost 11 years, borrowing from them on this account has never been cheap but this year their interest rates have rocketed to 23.9 % and to compound matters they don't tell you what rates you are paying on the statements as it is a bank account not a credit card and you have to contact them or work it out for yourself if you want to know how much APR you are actually being charged, they don't write and inform you about these changes you have to ask by calling them on their costly 0845 number and they employ various tactics to keep you on the ... more

The standard Bank of Scotland current account is the Chequeplus. This comes complete with chequebook, £100 cheque card,LINK ATM and Switch card and access to the telephone banking and the internet banking service (basic, but about to improve drastically, apparently!) I have held this account for 8 years, having first opened it as a student (their student deal is not bad, have a look!) then never getting around to changing it. Living in Scotland, there is a great branch network, but I never visit them. The telephone banking service provides everything I need for everyday. In general, the ... more
