In recent years the service they provided declined, the cash machines were forever empty; the queues at the branches were getting longer with less staff serving & the interest rate on my current account became laughable.
Apart from that, they did away with the enquires desk at my local branch forcing you to queue for the slightest enquiry, pester ...

Advantages: Reasonable service for Halifax customers Disadvantages: Bad news for Bank of Scotland customers
...time there was a charming bank called Bank of Scotland, which really cared about customer service...
Bank of Scotland merged with Halifax to create HBOS. Before the merger, we were reassured that nothing major would change, accounts and services would not be affected, and generally life would go on as we knew it. What actually happened pains me greatly as, up till the merger changes, Bank of Scotland was one of my favourite banks.
Non-Branch Based ... ...not yet transferred all the bank accounts to the new (Halifax) system. Our current account was on the new (Halifax) system and our instant access savings account was on the old (Bank of Scotland) system. The accounts were not converted to branch based accounts; the savings account was just left in limbo - barely accessible by peeved staff.

...ever got to an off-shore bank account before I joined the Bank of Scotland. I've been with them for over six months now, and on the whole, my experience has been good.
For a student, there are three things about a bank account that you want to see: stupidly large overdraft limits, bank managers with friendly-looking faces, and shiny free gifts. Impressively enough, the Bank of Scotland manages all three. A first-year overdraft limit of £1250 (recently ... ...despite my pathetic pleas, the Bank of Scotland wouldn't lend me anything to tide me over until the cheque finally came through. I was somewhat disappointed at the time, given their promotional paraphenalia which promised so much.
Since that initial glitch, however, I have to say that on the whole I have been quite impressed with the bank. They leave me to use their facilities in peace, without endless junk mail or stomach-churning messages popping ...

Advantages: guess it's safer than keeping it in a mattress, just. Disadvantages: Lying branch staff, horrendous charges
...I have been with the Bank of Scotland for as long as I can remember, probably about 18 years, however I am about to close my account because I have become increasingly annoyed with their treatment of me as a customer. My home branch is Portobello in Edinburgh and I only did my banking there until I left home and moved in to the centre of town. The first problems I started to have were when I turned 18. I went into the nearest branch to where I lived ... ...had the money in a Bank of Scotland account to clear off my Bank of Scotland phoneline loan, and they had no way of electronically transfering the funds, I have to write and post them a cheque. Does that seem slightly backwards to anyone else?
Anyway, whilst all this is happening, I am getting charged £20 - £30 pounds every time I go over my overdraft limit or a direct debit doesn't clear. I am also paying interest on my overdraft and a £15 'maintenence ...

Advantages: Basically works OK for me, internet banking Disadvantages: I'm not exactly in love with the service
Ah, Bank of Scotland and me. The ultimate love/hate relationship, except without, you know, the love. Actually, I liken it more to a marriage of convenience, complete with the 7 year itch. I think about leaving, often, but I never quite work up the energy. And just as I am about to finally pack my moneybags and split, something happens to keep me hanging on. I really have banked with BoS for 7 years- ever since I moved to Scotland. In that time, ... ...one day I came across Bank of Scotland's website. Lo, I discovered internet banking. You might have thought that as a customer of some standing, they would have sent me a letter or something to let me know, but hey, let's not sweat the small stuff. I'm a big girl, I signed up myself. Actually, it's not terribly straightforward to sign up. It involves various letters and applications and a bit of telephoning the Internet helpdesk and so forth. And ...

Advantages: It is a Bank Disadvantages: Run by a Building Society
...the same branch of the Bank of Scotland since 1994, when I was going through my second stint at University.
I opened the account as the branch was closest to my University and It was not a Building Society. In my opinion Building Societies know nothing about current accounts and should leave them well alone.

Things started going wrong in 2001 when the company I worked for had gone into administrative receivership. The end result of this was that I was very abruptly made redundant with 2 days pay instead of a months pay, no holiday pay and no redundancy payment. The first thing I did after ...

Advantages: does not have to be local with 'phone & internet Disadvantages: mainly historic baggage - currently excellent
I joined the Bank of Scotland more than 20 years ago. And although I have tried many other banks along the way, I've always maintained an account (of sorts) with them. Currently my wife and I use their chequeplus current account, their internet savings account and their visa account. The internet service is good if not spectacular. You can quickly see the state of all three accounts and transfer money between the current and savings accounts but ... ...I thought the transfer of bank branch facilities to a telephone company, the beginning of the end. But I have to admit this is definitely not so. The telephone people are invariably helpful and do seem to put themselves out when necessary. Also, the current state of the response rate to a call (that is how long you wait) is excellent. Usually you get someone within a few seconds though in the not too distant past this facility was much poorer. However, ...

I quite lke the Bank of Scotland in many ways. They have a comfortable feel about them and have impressed me with some quite innovative ideas. I think they were pretty clever with their idea of running smaller banking organisations using their own back up facilities. It has made them a force to recognised.
However, I am not so sure about their professionalism and expertise which boils down to staff and staff training or general policy. I have found ...

...want to beef about my bank or soon to be ex-bank. I am tired of their lack of sympathy and coldly uninterested slant on me as a human being. I am just a number and a small number at that.
I have been a member of this bank for 13 years; a faceless member who can't even remember the last time I was in the branch. The only communication I get is a statement every month or a vacantly unhelpful letter about an out of the blue overdraft.
My credit card ... ...I went well into the wrong colour. No phone call, no examination of my account, no 'oh, this doesn't look quite right' - just a plain, robotically typed letter telling me I owed them money and if I didn't pay off my mysterious debt (the first I knew about it was the letter), I would owe them more.
Point of fact - I now do, because it took over a week for the credit card co to refund my account - another bug bear!
However, it is the fact that I ...

Advantages: modern looking Disadvantages: clearning checks take to long
I chose to have a bank of Scotland account 2yrs ago when i was at college, so it was a students accout. After going back to college this year I put in my check on the Wednesday and went in the following Wednesday because I couldn't get money out of my account through thier cash machines only to find out that it hadn't cleared yet.

...been banking with the local Bank of Scotland branch, just down the street from me. It's really nice and handy that I actually have a proper, fixed-down branch in the place at the village I live in, particularly in this time and day when an awful lot of rural based banks are being closed down, by all the retail banks, not just my one. However, the banks in the village before me and the village after me have both been closed and replaced by hole-in-the-wall ... ...good thing to have a bank near to you, as if you are able to use a branch you should do so and go in and use it a lot...the more times you go in and use it, the more chance you will be able to get to know the people that serve you. I know that isn't applicable if you go to a big town branch and you get a different teller all the time, but in tural branches the tellers are usually the same most days, so it is easier to form a relationship with them ...

Advantages: Efficient, friendly bank with a brilliant range of products Disadvantages: Not enough branches down south !!
...and accesories, of course my bank balance took a battering and I lived firmly in the red. I was renting a flat in an expensive part of town and mixing with people who earned about three times what I did as an office junior! We changed my current account to one without an overdraft or cheque book (an Easycash ...

...decided to open a new bank account, we decided to go to Bank of Scotland as a few friends of ours were with them and they recommended them. Advantages: Big bank, lots of branches Disadvantages: Poor customer services
I have been with the Bank of Scotland for 7 years. To start with it was obligatory because I had a mortgage with them and part of the stipulation was you had to have an account. Fair enough. It was only used for mortgage payments and nothing else. Then a couple of years later I decided I had had enough of the bank my main account was with and transferred all my banking over to BoS.
To begin with everything was rosey. I was able to speak to my branch ... ...had an answer. Even the bank charges levied against my account for the odd misdemeanour were reasonable. All in all life was peaceful.
Then it all went wrong. Bos and Halifax merged and suddenly it appeared that profits came first and the customer second. Now I know that is bank ethos the world over, but up until the merger, at least the BoS had been subtle about it!
The first glimpse came when I received a phone call at work from the bank. My ...

To summarize, 10 tips for banking……..
1:Don't have more than one account, it will confuse your bank..
2: Put on your best suit when you go to see about a mortgage. Dress badly and the advisor will insult you and tell you that you wont get enough to change your mortgage, even though its less than the one you already have.
... ...to phone the bank from your mobile.
9:Don't think that like normal people you'll get a single statement for an account each month. Fully prepare yourself for 3 cross statements covering the same information
10:Spend it quick or you'll have to save it.
------------------------------------
Over the years they have been really good to me, getting me out of some difficult situations when I wasn't earning to much in the old monthly paycheck or when ...
