When I was in school (about aged 13) Barclays set up a basic account in a broom cupboard. I had a young savers account with Halifax and knew I had about £200 in there the thing was that was really out of bounds. I would save birthday and Christmas money but other than that my 50p pocket money was spent on sweets and cheap toys. I decided that in order to really save money I had to pay it into an account every week. At the time the manager from a local Barclays bank visited the school and used a team of year 11 students to collect the money and stamp our paying in books. At the age of 16 I was ... more

Barclays Open Plan Formerly an inspiration from the Woolwich, it was said when Barclays took them over that a big part of the reason was that those who claim to be fluent in finance were impressed by this financial model. Well, they liked it so much they bought the company. And a couple of years on we were faced with a saturation level advertising campaign to bring the concept to the people. Promising savings of billions for the nation! So, as the adverts do not actually tell us, what exactly is Open Plan? Well, it is a simple concept. You tell Barclays how much you want in your current ... more

REVIEW OF BARCLAYS "BARCLAY PLUS" ACCOUNT. ****WHY I CHOSE BARCLAYS**** At the age of 13 (this year!) i finally started taking an interest in fiance (i even understand alot about the NR Crises!). So i spent about a week googleing, seeing what NatWest, Lloyds TSB, Halifax, HSBC, Abbey, Nationwide and The Co-operative bank had to offer. I didn't bother looking up Barclays because i had heard bad things about them on TV (Watchdog & News), but eventually decided to take a look just to see what they had to offer. I was impressed! Pretty Good Interest (currently 5.25% Gross PA, rising to 5.75% Gross ... more

I have held a Barclays Bank Account since the Stone Age well since January 1985 – still a very long time, and in this time has Barclays shown me any reward for my continued patriotism? In a word, no! When I first applied for a Barclays Bank Account it was as a student to pay in my wages from a Saturday/Sunday job a fellow student was also doing and had started only a few weeks before. I don’t recall Barclays requiring the amount of information they do today in order to open an account and in fact there would have been very little I could have given them apart from my birth certificate. In ... more

I'm sure you'll all know the feeling. You have been with your current bank for so long that you can't be bothered to move elsewhere. It would be such a bother moving over all your bills and informing people of the change etc., etc., well this is exactly how I felt for many years, but now let me tell you an incredible story and you can decide whether or not you want to take heed of my warning. My account with Barclays Bank was opened way back in the early 70s when I was saving to get married. I remained with the Central Liverpool Branch because it was next door to my place of work and I ... more

I've only actually been a customer of barclays for just over a year, and have a joint current account, and joint e-saver account which is used for the general household finance (bills, mortgage etc). This may or may not be long enough for me to comment on the accounts, but I can compare it to Natwest (who I had my sole accounts with from the age of about 16 to last year) and Lloyds TSB who I moved my sole accounts to from Natwest (as I felt I could be getting a better deal and better service from Natwest, and I was right, but that's another review on another day!). We chose Barclays for the ... more

Shopping around for a Student Account can be a bit daunting, especially with all the incentives that are on offer. But the one thing that you've got to remember is to be vigilant. Many banks, like Natwest, offer students an incentive of £40-£50 or a personal CD player if you open an account with them. Barclays don't offer these cheap gimicks, but read on to find out what you do get. When I converted my current account to a Student Account last year, Barclays offered me an interest-free fee-free overdraft of up to £1350 (check with your branch as it may have increased), a Student Barclaycard ... more

Barclays, the well-known banking company, less well known for its amazing TV adverts, but hey that is another matter. This account is the one you will be given as a student with the bank, however, it is not solely reserved for this group within society. It is in fact, the basic instant access account offered. Now if high interest earnings is up your alley then you have taken a hideously wrong turn in choosing this account. Offering a whooping 0.10% you will earn a grand sum, enough to use public conveniences, 10p for every £100 you leave in the account for 12 months. The account comes with a ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Have you ever seen the queues to see a personal banker?!

I have to confess that when it comes to finance I can be pretty hopeless hence having tried probably every major high street bank in the quest to find one that doesn't shaft you. Easier said than done. I had a current account with Barclays at the time of looking for a student so it seemed sensible(ish) to go with them. At the click of button they transferred my current account to a student accout and bingo THE BONUSES/INCENTIVES Theres always a gimmick... Within a couple of days my £20 Waterstones or HMV vouchers arrived (which is quick) and you recieve these on successfully opening the ... more

Upon arriving at university for the first time you will be faced firstly with the option of dumping your gear and heading straight for the union or sorting the boring stuff like bank accounts out. Of course i recommend the first option, but when chosing your account take a close look at the Barclays student offer. The incentives are certainly good. Things have changed this year as opposed to the freebies i got last year though. Firstly there is the offer of £20 Waterstones vouchers when you deposit £500 into the account, then there is a further £20 of vouchers when you successfully apply for a ... more
