Advantages Advantages Good internet banking, good range of products, mortgage side of bank helpful and efficient

Disadvantages Disadvantages One mistake can lead to huge problems, customer service department slow to respond to complaints

It had never been my intention to have a bank account with Barclays. Back in the early 1980s when I found myself south of the border as a student and looking for a bank account to deposit my grant cheque Barclays was the subject of an NUS boycott due to their links to South Africa. Being a right on type of gal, I opted for the Midland Bank instead. When my husband and I needed a mortgage to buy our property in Edinburgh in 2006, we chose the Woolwich, which had recently been bought out by Barclays. As part of the mortgage we had to open a joint bank account which actually comprised of a ... more

Advantages Advantages reasonable package of benefits, decent online banking, let you use cheques paid in immediately

Disadvantages Disadvantages charges, abysmal interest if in credit, big behemot, not ethical

This review relates only to the CURRENT ACCOUNTS provided by Barclays, especially the Additions Plus account. There is no special category for these and general reviews seem to concentrate on that aspect of banking service. I will start briefly explaining my situation, so it's clear where my comparisons and judgements are coming from. I hold the Barclays account jointly with my husband (it was originally his and I was added on to it when I found out that as a new arrival I can't get a 'normal' bank account here immediately) and we use it as our main household account. Apart from that I also ... more

    Advantages Advantages (+) expansive range

Disadvantages Disadvantages (-) too many to mention...poor service, increasing prices, made many mistakes w/ my account

Little bit of history: I first opened an account with Barclays Bank when I was 11 years old after being recommended by a school friend and her Mother. I had the normal savings account - a bank card to use at the ATM and bank branch itself, with a daily £50 limit. Between the ages of 11 and 15 I had no problems with the bank, until of course when I was 16; a week before my 16th Birthday my account was updated/upgraded. I now had a chip+pin card but my account was essentially the same as before. However, one difference was that I now had £100 daily limit instead of the former £50. This was ... more

I have banked with Barclays since I became old enough to have a bank account. I often read press articles that "tell" us that the great British public suffers from terrible inertia when it comes to changing their bank account, and that over 75% of us never do. I don't suffer from inertia. I like my bank, and have absolutely no reason to change accounts whatsoever. I often read the scurrilous tales of fees charged for bouncing cheques, which criticise the way banks, operate. Let me clarify one thing. I don't believe that Barclays is any more sympathetic than its competitors but I never ... more

Advantages Advantages Good offers to new businesses.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lack of experience focused from Barclays towards the business.

Around two years ago I graduated from University and decided to set up my own marketing company. Having gained a degree in Business Studies I knew what sort of things I needed to do and one of the first on the list was to open a business bank account. I was well aware of the need for a good account and therefore decided to shop around. I set up meetings with all the major names in banking and visited them in turn. I have to admit that I wasn't overly surprised that they all offered similar services and were all willing to offer me the small amount of money I needed. So the decision came down ... more

I have banked with most of the mainstream banks during my banking life of about 16 years. I do have a tendency to chop and change because I am a sucker for any freebies they used to offer to set up a variety of accounts (do you remember those pigs that Nat West offered many moons ago?) I ran into difficulties several years ago with joint accounts I held with my husband and he brought black marks against both of our names, which I didn’t find out about until after we had separated. The separation caused me to have to try and open a current account in my own name, which proved to be almost ... more

Advantages Advantages patient, helpful, always willing to help.

Disadvantages Disadvantages can be put on hold for a while!

After reading so many reviews about Barclays Bank, and a lot of them not showing Barclays in a good light, I thought I would add my opinion, I never could shut up! So get a drink, pull up a chair and read my story! I have been with the bank for 10 years, and I have always just had a standard current account, which gave me a Connect Visa debit card which I could use with my cheque book and the ability to put my money in the bank, it was all I needed. I have always worked since leaving college, and it has only been in the last couple of years that I have had to have any communication with ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great customer service

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some people just love to hate banks!

I know it is fairly common practice to have a go at the major banks – they make too much money, charge their customers too much and don’t care about customer service. Well, I’d like to give another side to the story. I opened my first bank account with Barclays when I started my first job, as I needed somewhere for my wages to be paid. As my parents had always banked with Barclays it seemed the logical place to go. I chose to open a current account and I also had a cashpoint card (no credit cards as I was under 18). I was very happy with the service I received and have ... more

My father has (or had) banked with Barclays for many years, both commercially and personally, but as he contracted Alzheimer's Disease a couple of years ago, I registered with Barclays as power of Attorney so that I could manage his accounts, although he was reasonably compos mentis but he wanted me to do this. I was given access to the accounts online. In the months leading up to January 2007, we arranged for him to move from his large apartment to a retirement property closer to where I live. During this process, I incurred several thousand pounds worth of expenses on his behalf, so I ... more
