More than just an old book shop
Review of Barter Books (Shop) by ScottishWestie

Advantages: Selection of books, atmosphere, good website
Disadvantages: Parking, distance from most of the UK

...Victorian Alnwick railway station called Barter Books. In stock are about 350.000 books & there is something for everyone. HOW TO FIND IT To find Barter Books coming from the south, turn off the main A1 at the first turn off for Alnwick & head for the town centre, the store / old railway station is about mile off the A1 on the left hand side & well signposted. From the north, disregard the first turn off for Alnwick & take the second exit which ... Read review

Review of Barter Books (Shop) by nickyturnill

Advantages: This is a book lovers dream.
Disadvantages: Alnwick is a little out of the way for most readers.

A book lover's paradise!
Review of Barter Books (Shop) by electricfrog5

Advantages: So many books
Disadvantages: Never enough time

...hand bookshop, operating on a barter system. Hence the name... Barter Books. This shop is still alive and thriving, and one of the largest second hand bookshops in Britain. The layout of the station is still visible in the shop. Where the platforms were forms the main room, containing over 30 book shelves, as well as cases and cabinets around the edge for old and rare books. This is no longer open to the outside, and an end wall has been built ... Read review

Review of Barter Books (Shop) by Borg

Advantages: Great selection, great prices
Disadvantages: None

...I repeat MUST check out Barter Books. What can I say about this wondrous place? It is an Aladdin's cave of books. Books on all subjects. Rare, second hand. You name it, they have got it. A bit of history… Barter Books first opened in 1991 in the premises of a small model factory at Alnwick Station. Beginning in what was once the old ticket office in the train station, the shop has expanded down the platforms of the original station, ... Read review
