WHAT ON EARTH IS BHS? In case you have been away on a different planet for the past 70 years, BHS stands for British Home Stores. It is a retail outlet that sells ladies, gents, babies and children’s clothes. They also sell house wares but not on the scale of Ikea. Here’s a bit of useless information that will ultimately change your life – the first store was opened in 1928 and it was in sunny Brixton. They have stores from Scotland all the way down to Staines. WHAT ARE THE STORES LIKE? In my opinion they are bright, airy and very clean. The stores I have been in always have enough room for ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good for grannies

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive

BHS stuff is for anyone over 50 and virgins, simple as, the mix of navy, grey and browns depressing stuff, racks and racks of unfashionable clobber being picked at by grannies and Christians the moment the doors open at 9am. It’s only survived because chains like Littlewoods and COOP haven’t on the high street and with Primark on the march its days maybe numbered. It’s the HMV of clothing stores guys! Owner Phillip Green has been trying to flog the 187 store chain for a while now and recently announced the forced sales of 256 shops in his empire from all his brand names to make ends meet, any ... more

Well a lot of you will know I am starting work on the 24th November and when I went through my selection of work clothes, it consisted of easy wear clothes, tracky bottoms and tops and trainers and leggings. Now I can not see them been to impressed if I turn up to my first day looking a scruff so off to BHS I went. Now I had a voucher to spend on £150 of clothes, I could have got it for Top shop or Evans as I am good size 18. Top shop a bit too trendy for me. Evans at their prices I would be able to afford a pair of knickers never mind a few items of clothing. So I decided to opt for the ... more

Advantages Advantages the restaurant and home sections are very good

Disadvantages Disadvantages the rest is pretty rubbish really!

Well, what can be said about Bhs that hasn't already! Having worked there part time for the past 6 months I can surely speak with a great deal of experience. To put it mildy, they have their fingers in too many pies, making some of their items excellent (home, kids, sandwich store!) and others out-dated and unfashionable at prices that can be matched or beaten elsewhere (mens and womenswear). The main reason, at my Solihull store anyway, that Bhs isn't the ultimate shopping experience it makes out to be, is because the staff hate it and are paid a pittance (a general theme in retail, but these ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some Truely Boring Clothes and Expensive Food

I spend rather too much time in BHS, especially considering I have a young, hip and trendy image to maintain (!). However I do have a very good excuse - I work in one. Well, technically I work in an Iceland in one, but you get the general idea (and I’m not plugging my ‘actual’ place of work!). So by now I think I can give you a run down on the pros and cons. BHS actually opened it’s doors as British Home Stores way back in 1928, so after over 70 years of trading they should have got the hang of it by now! Essentially a department store in the way that C&A (R.I.P) was ... more

Bhs, just like a cheaper version of Marks and Spencers. From lamps to chocolate hearts, BhS stocks a wide range of products. The quality of the goods is not quite as great as M&S though. They don't fall apart, but the material and stitching doesn't seem to be of as good a quality as that of more expensive shops. But for this the goods are generally cheaper. For example, a pair of slippers are about £20 whereas in M&S they're about £30. The sell clothes for women, men and children. The womens clothes are for those older than 30 as they're really "frumpy" and sensible. One of their ranges that ... more

Advantages Advantages Many different items under one roof

Disadvantages Disadvantages Jaded, untidy and unwelcoming

I used to love British Home Stores and was a frequent customer of theirs. I now find it not nearly as good as it used to be and usually find I wander around and then, feeling disheartened, leave without buying anything. This saddens me as I used to love this shop and, to me it was an institution. I am mainly basing this review on the BHS stores in Ilford shopping centre and Romford. Perhaps stores in other areas are superior. I often used to visit British Home Stores twice weekly. Then my children were younger so I had more use for BHS. I didn't only buy for the children though. I would also ... more

I would just like to write a review on my local BHS store, although I am sure that a lot of what I am going to be saying about them will in no doubt relate to many of their stores. Many of the larger towns and cities have no doubt got one of these stores, and so therefore I am hoping that most if not all of you will have at least heard of them or maybe you have even been in to one of the shops. My local store in Plymouth is located over 'two and a half floors', the half a floor being the mezzanine level which holds a small coffee shop and the ladies lingerie/ nightwear section along with a ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages very untrendy and quite pricey

Having previously worked at BHS i feel that i qualify easily to write an opinion about them. Working for them is a nightmare (but that's a different story) and shopping there can prove to be quite scary aswell! The fashion ranges for men and women are very dated and are seriously lacking in street-cred. Over 65's and people people who like looking very casual LOVE it in here. If you are under 30 then you will probably find that there is nothing at this store for you. The clothes are usually expensive and lack in quality big-time (the amount of faulty items returned is almost impressive) ... more

Advantages Advantages Loads if you're a thief

Disadvantages Disadvantages Loads if you're not

Now I am not a thief, but if I were, then I would consider British Home Stores in Swindon to be an adventure playground. Although I am not a frequent visitor to BHS, I decided to patronise this establishment yesterday in order to purchase a pair of school trousers for my teenage son. BHS appears to be one of the few stores that actually supplies school uniform all year around, in average sizes for the average child, rather than some left-over from last season that would fit a Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pig on stilts. After struggling in and out of the lift with a pushchair, my one-year-old ... more
